Felipe Massa’s annual off-season kart race is taking place on January 12th and 13th instead of in December, so the 2011 edition will be followed by the 2013 running of the race.

Among those competing this year are: Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Pastor Maldonado and Vitantonio Liuzzi.

They are also trying to bring Schumacher, Valentino Rossi and Kobayashi.

Is Rob Smedley going as well? So that if Alonso needs, Rob can ask Massa to move over…

Interesting that Alonso is going for the first time, seems to support the theory that Alonso and Massa are getting on a bit better in recent times.

Kamui Kobayashi, Bruno Senna, Jaime Alguersuari, Lucas di Grassi, Nelson Piquet Jnr, Luciano Burti, Antonio Pizzonia, Sebastien Buemi, Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Zonta have joined the list but Maldonado seems to have dropped off it.

That still leaves 13 F1 drivers past and present on the grid, and that could be bumped up to 14 as Jules Bianchi is racing too.

Also on the grid are Auguto Farfus (WTCC), Felipe Nasr (GP2), Pietro Fittipaldi (grandson of Emerson) and Joao Paulo de Oliveira (Super GT/Formula Nippon) among others.

That’s a great list this year! I love that Massa hosts this every year. Still it would be nice to see Barrichello, Kanaan, Castroneves, etc. joining in on the fun this year.

Bianchi, in a Force-India-lookalike kart, won the first race (he had obtained pole position earlier), while Alonso didn’t finish and Massa finished 10th. Ex-F1 drivers Di Grassi and Liuzzi were second and third, Buemi placed 4th. Nasr was 6th, Nelsinho Piquet 7th, Pizzonia 12th, Alguersuari 14th, Bernoldi 15th. Bruno Senna and Kamui Kobayashi did not complete the race.
Later today, there is a second race.

Keith, you wrote on Twitter that Alonso has set the fastest lap. It’s not true, Bianchi did that – http://www.desafiodasestrelas.com.br/resultados/124.pdf . Alonso’s 52.814 was achieved when he cut the track in the second sector, which is clearly visible here, in laptimes analysis – http://www.desafiodasestrelas.com.br/resultados/125.pdf .

@ArmchairExpert Thanks for that – I’d seen it on the live timing which must not have taken the fact he cut the track into account.

Oh dear, Alguersuari’s ploughed into some other guy. That’s what happens if you listen to James Allen all year instead of racing anything.

This is great, it’s like having a Grand Prix in the middle of winter. It’s the right time of day too. Live video of Race 2 here: http://www.brmtv.com.br/
