I really don’t see how, it was such a freak accident. What can they say? Don’t use a jet engine to dry the track? if you do, do it under red flag so nothing else is out on track?

Yes, that’s exactly what they can do. Why have dozens of cars doing 70mph on the track when there’s 760 litres of aviation fuel going round at the same time?

Glad everyone was ok, if the crash had been elsewhere on the track that fuel could have caused a lot of injury or worse.

Is that why the race was at night, because of rain? Or is that normal for Daytona 500?

Brad Keselowski was Tweeting during the red flag:

So he had his phone in the car with him? That’s amazing. Love the interaction NASCAR drivers have with the fans.

How many incidents does NASCAR cause seriously in the last few meetings numerous incidents have been caused. F1 you get your odd big incident or a pile up rarely & F1 drivers are more exposed to the elements and yet are still safer than in NASCAR!

If they can’t race in the wet, yet it was wet enough to warrent a jet dryer to be on the track, why were they ever racing at that point anyway?

That was really strange, I really glad Montoya, the truck driver, the fire service team and everyone else is ok.

Mad accident, really! can’t think why they have a truck with a big tank of jet fuel at the back going round while the cars are on track!

    that stuff is dangerous!

@ajokay They weren’t racing but circling under a caution, JPM was just trying to catch up the pack, which is why they were only doing 70mph. That’s how I understood it.

Not really. More accidents doesn’t mean it’s more dangerous. The cars are enclosed and the speeds are usually much slower than open wheel racing. NASCAR’s still pretty far on the safe side in the scheme of racing. There’s little that can penetrate the cockpit and even major shunts have shown the cars can take a serious hit without injuring the driver. A great example would be McDowell qualifying wreck in 2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI96AKMswLM

They were under caution for debris in Turn 3. Having a jet dryer out there to help clear the racing surface in those situations is standard procedure.

I’d argue that NASCAR is possibly one of the safest forms of racing out there. Montoya’s crash was a fluke, and these things happen (though I’ve never seen something like this happen, which shows the rarity of the situation, as the trucks are almost always on the track during cautions, as a large majority of cautions are debris related cautions).

    Speaking of dangerous.

Montoya’s post crash interview: He was trying to work out why he had a vibration/handling problem where his spotter could see. This just happened to be where the dryer was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQcYNUdE-Gc
