Today’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in California was marred by a series of tyre failures with almost 20 cars suffering flat rears after all running 15-20 green flag laps on the same set of tyres.

After Jimmie Johnson led almost the whole race and suffered a flat with about 8 laps to go, Kyle Busch eventually won on a Green-White-Chequered finish that was brought out after Clint Bowyer spun due to yet another flat tyre.

Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of questions asked of Goodyear, NASCAR’s tyre supplier, after this race…

OK, sounds like it was more to do with how the teams set the cars up, rather than the tyres themselves. Now where have I heard that before…

The tyre failures were pretty curious considering the left side tyres experience much less load than the right side tyres. It reminds me of that farcical race at Indy a few years ago (the NASCAR Brickyard 400 I mean, not the Formula 1 race), although yesterday’s race perhaps wasn’t as bad as that. I seem to recall NASCAR being forced to bring out a caution every 10 laps because the tyres could last no longer. At least this race didn’t get THAT bad…

Everyone’s quick to point at Goodyear, but I think other factors played a large part. Camber, pressures and the track surface, for instance.
