2014 World Cup – mathers wins Predictions
4th June 2014, 22:30 at 10:30 pm #262291
It’s only natural that there will be a number of us following the World Cup from next week, even those of us who aren’t hugely interested in football the whole year round!
But as such I though I would create a thread where everyone who wants to can discuss the happenings of what’s going on in Brazil.
I’ll spark some conversation off with a simple question. Who’s going to win?
My answer: Brazil.4th June 2014, 22:52 at 10:52 pm #262294
World cups and Euros are the only time I really watch and get into football. But anyway, my answer is based on the team I happened to randomly pick for sweepstakes at work – Argentina. One thing’s for sure, England won’t do well. I’ll be surprised if they get out the group stages!
I’ll take it a little further and say the top 8 will be:
Brazil, Spain, Italy, Japan, France, Argentina, Germany, Belgium.
The top 4:
Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Germany.
Final will be between Brazil and Argentina.4th June 2014, 22:53 at 10:53 pm #262295
It’s got to be Real Madrid.4th June 2014, 23:41 at 11:41 pm #262296
@magnificent-geoffrey – Um… Now if you’d said Barcelona we could have at least gone ‘Ah well, that’s practically Spain anyway.’ :P haha
I’d also like to know who you’re all supporting?
As an Englishman I’ll be supporting England, but as a realist, I know they won’t win. The other teams I’d like to do well are Spain and the Netherlands.
Also Jamie, I’ll raise you and predict everything. (Winners in bold)
Group: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Group A: Brazil, Croatia, Cameroon, Mexico
Group B: Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Chile
Group C: Colombia, Ivory Coast, Japan, Greece

Russia, Japan & South Korea are the teams I’m supporting. Even though over the last two years my interest in soccer has substantially diminished, I’ll always love the World Cup! Really looking forward to it.5th June 2014, 0:42 at 12:42 am #262302
I hope for a last eight of Brazil, England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Argentina and Belgium, who beat Portugal in the second round. Top 4 – Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany. Brazil to win, just to spite Diego Costa who opted to play for a naturalised Spain instead. Perhaps England can beat Columbia without Falcao, and Uruguay with Suarez recovering from injury, to make the quarter finals. Brazil beat the Netherlands in the second round, making that the top 10.
Of course this is basically the Bloomberg prediction, I also saw another I thought was quite good. But if we lose Oxlade-Chamberlain from the Ecuador game, it’s hard to see us winning any games in Brazil…..5th June 2014, 3:08 at 3:08 am #262305

England will in the World Cup, because they always seem to do well when there’s no pressure.5th June 2014, 6:33 at 6:33 am #262308
Runner Up: Brazil
Team to Watch: Chile
BTW the World Cup Rankings get updated tomorrow5th June 2014, 7:40 at 7:40 am #262309
On another note, Miroslav Klose is going to break Ronaldo “el fenomeno’s” record of most world cup goals ever (15). He already got pretty “klose” in 2010. :)5th June 2014, 7:46 at 7:46 am #262310
- Spain wins it again.
- Brazil will not make it to the top 4.
- Germany takes Bronze.
- Belgium will be the biggest flop.
- Chile will be the biggest surprise.
Personally I cheer for Netherlands, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Japan, Ghana & Ivory Coast.5th June 2014, 8:01 at 8:01 am #262312
Is Klose still around? Wow. He must be getting on a bit now!
Also, I’m supporting my two nations, England and Australia. But mainly Australia, because the England team is made up of players with almost no redeeming qualities as people.5th June 2014, 8:42 at 8:42 am #262314
I resisted the urge to abuse my power and arbitrarily delete a thread about football…
Seriously though I’ll probably watch the England matches with friends to be sociable. Unless it clashes with any races, of course. I remember watching one such game in 2006 at a pub and leaving halfway through because qualifying was on (for the United States Grand Prix, I think) and the roads being completely deserted!
The thought occurs I should try to write another tenuous tie-in article.5th June 2014, 9:37 at 9:37 am #262317
I’ll probably end up supporting Germany or the Netherlands and, as a Scot, all the teams who are going to play England. ;)
Joking aside, England have a tough task and I honestly don’t see them getting out of that group. They are dithering over formation, which players to start and where to start them, it isn’t exactly a recipe for success.
