The 1976 short film C’était un Rendez-vous (commonly known as Rendezvous) might just about count – it’s basically an eight minute film of an early morning drive through the streets of Paris at silly speeds, we never see the car and the identity of the driver isn’t revealed. Speculation for a long time was that it was an F1 driver, but five years ago the director confirmed he was behind the wheel. Search for “rendezvous paris” on youtube.

Wasn’t Elvis a race driver in Viva Las Vegas? Car chase in the original Gone in Sixty Seconds was awesome but the best driving film still has to be Duel. Not motor racing but cars none the less. On the subject of the Pixar Cars films, even my target audience kids thought they were lame.

The Transporter films, and Crank have some excellent driving scenes in them although they’re cinematic popcorn at best (very very good popcorn though). Senna, in the cinematic cut was a deeply flawed documentary that had some excellent footage. Supposedly the DVD extended version fixes some of the omissions and poor decisions but I’m not convinced it’ll be worth the effort to sit down and watch.

Bullitt is the classic car chase film. I think the TT documentary could be well worth seeking out, though. I get the impression it’s a far more cohesive effort than Senna.

Ah, I wanted to mention C’était un Rendez-Vous aswell. It is really well made, the only thing that I dislike are the tyre sounds. The sounds aren’t original, he drove a Mercedes but the engine sounds are from a Ferrari I think (that engine sounds great but the tyre squealing is just too much). Its a good piece of driving that most likely can never be recreated although that would be truly spectacular in a modern sportscar.

In addition to the ones you mentioned, there is some dirt racing films that may deserve to be seen, like On Any sunday (1971, very very nice in my opinion), Dirt (1979) and Dust to Glory (2005).

I’m no film fanatic (I watch a fair bit of Anime but that’s about it outwith the odd £3 DVD from Tesco) but Grand Prix is essential viewing. When I showed it to a non-F1 fan he was impressed, although I did have to explain a few things about racing. Senna is also great, but when you take out the unseen footage I wasn’t really blown away,

TT: Closer to the Edge was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting much, but as a whole it is engaging to watch. Seeing it on Blu-Ray and a friend’s 42″ plasma TV probably helped, but I was impressed nevertheless, even although I don’t (or didn’t) know much about the Isle of Man TT.

If you want a good short film, the “Climb Dance” is a just that.

Not sure if it counts though as it was made by Peugeot. However, it’s just impressive.

For worst try “Michel Vaillant” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307156/
To be honest I missed the start as I came across it flicking through the channels, but maybe that wasn’t a bad thing. I stuck with it to the end, with only more beer from the fridge keeping me going.

Right now I’m watching “Jochen Rindts letzter Sommer” (Jochen Rindts last summer). Its a brilliant documentary, great footage from the races but also from Rindts tv show and interesting interviews with people like Bernie. Also the music thats played during the racing scenes is very well picked and adds a lot to the excitement. The original sound from the track is sometimes added aswell, the track announcer telling you how its going. Most of the talking is done by Rindt himself, narrating his season, the accidents durng the season and as I’m typing he is talking about his worry that something might happen to him that he cannot control (something breaking ..)
Its a really good documentary, I hope there is an english version for you guys to see.

Can’t believe that no one has mentioned The Italian Job yet (original of course…..), one of the best and well choreographed chase scenes ever seen on film!

My friend got the TT movie and I watched it last week and considering the fact I had almost no knowledge of the TT it was really good, some of the camera shots were incredible and it does make you feel like you must see it live at some point

Great question but you gotta break it into categories. These are in no particular order. Racing movies: senna, grand prix, le mans, cannon ball run, speed zone, stocker ace, death race, cars, and herbie. Chase scenes: bullit, French connection, fast and the furious, ronin, smokey and the bandit, and the transporter.

Driven is actually a Renny Harlin film, it’s not a serious racing flick so probably not worthy of some of the criticism in this thread. Senna is the best racing film I’ve seen in ages, surely that’s the type of film we should be comparing…not days of thunder & driven etc…

Yeah but to me it’s almost a given that most people here will enjoy racing documentaries such as Senna. We’re all racing nerds, so an inside look like that is going to fascinate the majority of us easily. They’d have to get something horrendously wrong to turn us off of it. Fictional (or sometimes “true-story-based”) narrative is much trickier to please fans of our nature and the impression I got was that the discussion was what narrative pieces hold up.

Eric Bana did a film called ‘Love the Beast’ and I’ve always wanted to see that since his appearance on Top Gear. Could someone tell me if that film is any good?

motor racing itself is probably the worst subject to make a film from because dramatic films always concentrate on the relationships of the characters whereas us racing fans are just interested in what happens on the track, and you can’t make a film based on just track action, you end up having to go the documentary direction. I think most racing series particularly F1 are to sterile an environment to make for a good dramatic film, especially nowadays.

Regarding straight forward car/driving films surely fast & furious series must take the turkey award, they really are dreadful
