Clue #1: The engine you see was the first to have a major technical innovation.
My pre-war knowledge isn’t great. I’ll guess at some model of Duesenberg.

Clue #2: It’s a marque that still exists.

I really don’t think it is, but I’ll guess Alfa Romeo because I’m struggling to think of any pre-war manufacturers that it looks like it could be.

Clue #3: The car is painted in it’s country’s racing color (but in a different shade).

Wow, that was much taller than I thought it would be. I thoughts it would be from the 20′s, or maybe even 30′s.

That’s the one. Pre-war meant pre-WW1 in this case :P.
It won the 1916 Indy 500. It’s engine, the same as in the L76, was the first to have a dual overhead camshaft. The outside also looks very modern for it’s day indeed.

You are finding the car which is closest to the camera.
The color and the tail lights make me think it’s a Ferrari, but I have no idea which model. Some kind of 512 perhaps?
Edit: I think it’s a 312P.
