@catracho504 I feel the same way. Motor racing is intensely thrilling to me regardless of the speed. Even when I was driving a kart that was probably slower than my bike (seriously, I was able to keep my foot down in hairpins), I had some great battles, and that made it completely worth it.

Yeah, well, you’re probably older than me. (I’m 12.) :P

And the track I race on has 36 turns (or as many as 40, depending on how you define/count ‘turns’) crammed in to just under half a mile (about 0.8 km). :P

@joey-zyla Actually I’m not that much older than you. I’m only 15. By the way, I must say that for a 12 year-old you have great spelling and grammar. Most of the 12 year-olds I know can’t even string a sentence together in a grammatically sound way :P

Anyways, that sounds like a pretty epic go-kart circuit. I rarely get to drive on proper tracks, since the local ones are either trash or too expensive.

And by the way, I drove over 48 when I was 10. So I win :P

‘I must say that for a 12 year-old you have great spelling and grammar.’ Thanks. :)

‘Anyways, that sounds like a pretty epic go-kart circuit.’ It definitely is. Here it is on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=malibu+raceway&sugexp=chrome,mod%3D13&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&ei=4xfEUJmQBufyiQKH_4HQCg&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAA

As you can see, it has several different corner types, but the large amount of ‘S-curves’ stands out. The layout is difficult to memorize, but it’s usually okay if you make a mistake since the karts are extremely responsive. That big, sweeping ’roundabout’ turn is harder than it looks because on the entrance to the corner there are three bumps in the road (on the racing line) and you have to concentrate to hold the steering wheel steady. I can go around the whole track flat-out, and when the front straightaway has no speed limit, my left foot occasionally will fall asleep. However, there is usually a 5 mph speed limit on the front straightaway for the safety of drivers entering and exiting the track (they don’t really give you much room to get up to speed when leaving the ‘garage’, which is really a big covered area with openings on each side, but you get the idea).

@joey-zyla Wow, sounds amazing, especially compared to the 10-corner layouts I usually see. I’ll have to check the map later, since my Windows Phone can’t access Google Maps (yeah, Microsoft actually did that).

Yeah, it’s really fun to drive. And in the very short time you can glance at the scenery, the trees surrounding the track make it such a great experience, almost Hockenheimring-like, with the forest. From above you can see it’s not an actual forest of course, but the trees are placed in such a way that it seems that way while you’re driving. Another key feature is the two ninety-degree corners at the top-left. It’s a great overtaking spot and the way it suddenly comes at you after the bend before it makes it one of the most thrilling parts of the track. In the end, though, it’s a very safe and fun place to race and if you ever happen to come to Oregon it should be near the top of any racing fan’s list. Next to the one and only Portland International Raceway, of course.

Wow! You guys get to race much cooler karts!! There is only one track here in spain that uses the Sodi karts with the rotax engines… Funn enough, it´s the track that Sergio Perez visited while in Spain for the Europeaan Grand Prix… I haven´t seen video of his ride but he was close to the lap record!
This is a vid of a friend of mine in said track with the Sodi/rotax combo. Oh BTW, that was a nasty shunt!!

Recently I have begun competing for the University of Hertfordshire in the British Universities Karting Championship. The championship runs Club100 karts around various circuits in the UK (Buckmore Park, Llandow, Whilton Mill etc..)

The first round was supposed to be held at Buckmore Park last Wednesday but the circuit was snowed under! (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/A9XB2H7CIAA0RvQ.jpg:large)

Here’s some video from the Southern and Northern Qualifiers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avkUYDwv-uM&feature=plcp

@f199player Ouch – good job you went in backwards!

@ryanwilliams – Cool, I raced in that for my university when it was first set up.

We did quite poorly, though I remember I had us up in fourth in one race at Warden Law until I took a front wheel off trying to pass the guy in third, resulting in one very slow lap on a tricycle followed by a five-lap pit stop…

I thought about participating but reckoned that I’m too slow so didn’t bother.

That´s not the right attitude sir! You will never know how good you are if you never try going up against others. For me, it was quite amusing since in my home country we don´t have these… even if they are just 9hpor 28hp, when I first tried it, I ended up a respectable 2nd… and from then on I consistently was always on podium… Keep in mind that the guys I raced against had been karting forever! and so jumping into it and doing ok… made me think “what could have been”…

    @ryanwilliams
That is awesom sir!! Looks like a very busy Grid! I would love to have a go at that!!
