    Has an F1 driver ever actually failed a doping test? Or in any racing series for that matter?

    Apparently drivers can be sanctioned for DUI lol.

    Does anyone know how often Formula 1 drivers have to do a drug test? I have never heard of any driver ever having to do one, but because some drugs are illegal to use in Formula 1, this has to be checked, right?

    @andae23 http://www.fia.com/public/anti-doping/documents/2011-Overview.pdf

    A total of 22 in-competition tests were carried out on 79 drivers.

    I don’t really understand this. Could it mean that 57 out of those 79 drivers had to deliver a sample, but the samples weren’t tested?

    One thing is clear, the FIA doesn’t take anti-doping very serious. 79 drivers out of all motorsport categories for a whole year?

    I think it means that out of the events that are mentioned, 22 tests were executed during the competition (probably at the race weekend itself), with an avarage of 4 drivers per test (so 4*22=±79). Should have read it more thoroughly before asking :P

    Ah, yes, quite obvious. I was stuck in the habit of mind that a test meant checking one sample for substances.

    But yeah, that means about one test per year per championship on only a few drivers. Probability is one of my weaker subjects, but the chance of getting caught seems pretty slim.

    If anyone’s still interested, F1 drivers do have to take doping tests:

    @mads Excuse the late reply, but the answer is yes. Tomáš Enge Got in big trouble for cocaine, and, more recently (this year), got suspended from motor racing for using an illegal substance.

    This is why I like motorsports: Development and innovation is allowed. Most of all the other sports are quite Amish-like in their way of looking at new technology.
    I think Sport should embrace the development of performance enhancers in a more open way: Look at, and test new technologies for the benefit of humanity, both regarding Hardware, software and medication. Why not regulate and control the use, allow some development and innovation, instead of having a zero tolerance. Even the substances You and I can buy at the pharmacy without a prescription can bring an athlete in trouble.

    Just for the sake of it:

    Wow. I hope this never happens in Motorsport, ever. Imagine the enormous controversy and aftermath outrage if Michael Schumacher was stripped of his 7 world titles.

    I think the idea of Formula 1 drivers piloting their car while under the influence of any type of drug is frightening enough to put them off from doping on safety grounds.

    @Magnificent Geoffrey
    Agreed mate!! What do they actually test for? I may sound niave but apart for coke what can a driver take for enhancement!? I guess some type of steriod (not anabolic of course ) could be a issue??

    Steroids would probably be the biggest problems – contrary to popular opinion, steroids don’t make you muscly, they make it easier for you to absorb oxygen, which gives a performance advantage.
