MotoGP, is it really that good? (28 posts)

I’d agree that the overtaking in bike racing isnt as exciting – passes are almost always done under braking for a slow corner, defending is pretty much non existant and theres moves every lap. The real excitement in it comes from the battles, with different riders counter attacking or pressuring the guy in front until he bins it (which happens surprisingly often).

As other have said there are the battles between Rossi and Lorenzo at Catalunya in ’09, and the Stoner and Rossi at Laguna Seca the year before (That race is a blinding example of two riders being on a totally different level to everyone else)

The first MotoGP race I ever watched was the first race of 2005 – infamous and exicting for this moment on the final corner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m35LqM3kto

Or my absolute favourite, the battle between Rossi, Kenny Roberts Jr. and Toni Elias at Estoril in 2006. I can’t find a video of it anywhere, which is annoying, as it’s the most unbelievable race I think I’ve ever seen.

I understand it’s not for everyone – I have no interest whatsoever in road bikes – but there are a lot of genuinely exciting races every year. Even last year, which was a naff season, had a couple of blinders.

Of course it has its issues – the lack of manufacturers and a tiny grid is a huge downer, but watch an entire season and you might just enjoy it.

I’m the same as you Dan, no interest in riding bikes myself but I really quite enjoy MotoGP. Handily it’s usually on when F1 is on an off-weekend so I get to watch it instead while I have sunday lunch :D.

I think the riders’ skill is a lot more apparent than in F1, I cant help but be amazed when Stoner gets his back wheel out.

Having just 17 riders in MotoGP is boring. I prefer Moto2 as the number of riders leads to many battles.

I think Moto GP provides some amazing battles, pretty much all include Rossi and have a lot have been mentioned but the field is way too small, top 15 scoring points with only 17 starters is just stupid, but next year the regs are changing, with the engine size being increased and from what I’ve gathered there is going to be a lot more satellite teams. Moto 2 is good but the 125 class is immense, literally packs of them at the front and they’re constantly going at each other, yeh it does devalue overtaking but is fun to watch.
Also if anyone does watch it then keep an eye out for Marc Marquez, hes just moved up from 125s to Moto 2, he’s already broke a lot of Rossi’s records in the 125 class and is only 17, maybe 18.

@Ned Flanders: Thats something that bugs me too. There is 38 riders in Moto 2. There should be at least that Moto GP.

The starting grid look ridiculous in Qatar and the racing was pretty boring too. I’ll hold out but on some of the older circuits and as the season wears on, I have no doubt that it will improve. They do need far more riders though.

I’m with Spud on the size of the grid. 16 bikes looks as bad as… well, when F1 has 20 a few years ago.

Dan- Yeah Portugal 2006 was amazing! That was one of the first bike races I can ever recall watching

I should mention I’ve actually been to a Moto GP race, the 2009 British GP at Donington. I must admit, as brilliant as those bikes are, they just didn’t excite me anywhere near as much as F1 cars would’ve done, perhaps because they were so frustratingly slow through tight corners. That said, they get up to some serious speeds on the straights, and the sounds those bikes create is fantastic, especially the Ducati’s.

And, the atmosphere was unbelievable. The way the fans were packed onto the hillside on either side of the Craner Curves made it into a stadium section. And at the end there was a track invasion so I got to see the Podium from the pit straight! Shame Simon Gillett went and lost the Moto GP contract to Silverstone

At least those 16 bikes have battles up and down the field and don’t have to engineer overtaking…

Or do we think HRT Virgin and Lotus added to the show last season?

I’ve been following MotoGP since 2006 I think. It has its ups and downs.

As slr said, Stoner vs. Rossi USA 2008 and Lorenzo vs. Rossi Catalunya 2009 were some excellent battles indeed! There was a three way fight between Lorenzo, Rossi & Pedrosa at Catalunya too…I think it might have been 2008.

My cousin and her boyfriend love MotoGP as her boyfriend rides bikes. They got me into watching a couple of the early races last year and I enjoyed it. I think I liked Moto2 a bit more because of the sheer size of the grid and the chassis/engine regulations that make the racing a bit more interesting.

MotoGP is great, but it could get a bit boring. I heard last year’s race at Motegi was amazing though as Rossi and Lorenzo were rubbing the whole race.

Although its a bit out of order to the other riders… Rossi is for me the biggest part of MotoGP, he can make or break a race, when hes on form and not injured… he can make a race soo exiting and usually battling through the field. When hes not competitive like the last race its not as exiting. (I find anyway :P)

A lot of the races in 2009 were absolutely amazing. The last few laps of Barcelona was one of the most exciting moments in sport I have ever seen.

Last year was a complete bore with Lorenzo pretty much winning every single race and Rossi being out for most of the season.

As for the lack of bikes, Moto 2 has a lot more, in fact they have an insane amount. That and the fact they are all fairly young makes for some great racing.
