Actually, FIAsco is a very good word to describe FIA…

One bit of good news from the FIA was lost in all of the controversy of the Bahrain decision: the Monte Carlo rally is back on the calendar from 2012! What a nice surprise, and a great move for the WRC.

Also, the Abu Dhabi rally has been put back a year. That’s fine by me, I can see it being another cool looking but spectatorless event, like Jordan is

And they’ve found a solution to road order tactics, with the shakedown stage being treated as a “qualifying” run, with the fastest drivers being entitled to choose their running order.

I’m not sure that’s necessarily a good thing though. Better than the current system I suppose, because it won’t lead to tactics, but now I fear that rallies will be fairly predictable. I reckon random order would have been a better alternative

But a random running order would only encourage road-sweeping even more.

Either way, it would be awesome to get rid of this road-sweeping thing.

    Well, that’s the intention.

The road sweeping thing is a little tedious but I always like a little strategic element thrown in the mix. Good find about the Monte Carlo Rally as well Greg.

    ** SPOILER ALERT **

So Ogier won, things are getting tight at the top. 22 points seperate the top 3 I think. It was a shame to not see Petter on the podium.

Did anyone see Hirvonen’s slight off towards the end of day 2? Very close!

I was thinking of trying to get to a rally next year and Greece is very much up there. Beautiful surroundings.

There’s a chance the Acropolis won’t be on the 2012 calendar. For a while now, the WRC has worked on a rotating events system, with individual rallies being held every other year. The Acroppolis was not on the 2010 calendar, so it may not appear in 2012.

  • Profile picture of Ned Flanders Ned Flanders said 1 year, 11 months ago:

No, it’ll be back. Here’s a link to the calendar: http://www.rallybuzz.com/monte-carlo-rally-2012-wrc-calendar-news/

It seems like the rotation system is all but over, with the exception of Australia/ New Zealand. I think that’s a bit of a shame- there are obviously a few events which belong on the calendar every year, but I think it’d make sense to swap a few of them around to give more countries a chance to host a rally. Also, it seems that Jordan is gone, which is a bit of a shame because it was pretty unique, but I suppose there are other events more deserving of a place on the calendar.

It wasn’t a classic rally this weekend. The road sweeping effect was huge- I still can’t believe how Solberg managed to blow a 50 second lead in 3 stages on Saturday morning- and the tactics were annoying. I wish they could bring in the new road order rules now, but I suppose half the rallies left in 2011 are tarmac so it won’t have as big an effect in the second half of the season. Loeb’s 24 point lead over Ogier is looking pretty unasailable

I saw this video of a Tommi Makinen crash from Argentina 2002 last night. It’s absolutely astounding. (Just try and ignore the annoying commentary)

Not because of the crash itself, big though it was, but because of the unbelievably lucky escape of the man stood by the side of the track. The car is rolling towards him, he’s facing certain death, yet the car somehow it changes trajectory and bounces safely over his head. It’s almost enough to make me believe in Guardian Angels!

Yea I thought I saw the Greek Rally listed on next years calendar during the Power Stage programme on ESPN.
