The IRC managed to cover almost the whole Monte Carlo Rally on Eurosport, but you can tell it takes a hell of alot of production and money to do and as Eurosport Events organise the IRC that helps.
However they are unlikely to do it for any but the most popular of rallies as it takes up a fair bit of airtime, costs and staff.

This video gives you an idea of the difficulties they have in filming it. Watch the bit with the helicopter @1.30- it’s incredible! Personally I think they do a good job, considering how many miles of stages they are forced to cater for, they seem to catch most of the incidents on camera, and they have a great fancam system which F1 ought to consider if it want’s to embrace its fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD9PFkCNSp0

As far as I know, if FOM sees something from a race filmed on a cam from a fan on Youtube, they will remove the video. I think F1 promoters should be North One Sport, not FOM.

Yeh it must be crazy difficult, but there could be a few set cameras on a live feed surely?

As nice as it would be to see a live feed, I can’t imagine it would do much for the sport, seeing the odd corner really doesn’t do much overall. It’s no indication as to a competitors pace.

Ned would you like to write a “Why You Should Watch…” on the WRC? We’ve not had one yet…

    Why You Should Watch…

Anybody with RBR, I strongly recommend getting RSRBR2011, as it has the DS3 and the Fiesta! I haven’t driven the DS3 yet, but the Fiesta is a blast! Anybody else play RBR?

Yeah I wondered about that actually. I’m surprised no one has done one yet, it would seem like one of the most obvious choices. I’ll have a go in a few weeks once my current uni essay is out of the way, maybe I could take quotes from this thread to make it a bit of a community one

I find it hard to follow WRC the same way I follow F1 due to the way it’s broadcast. Having said that, rallying is fantastic. The main reason I guess is because it is so much easier to relate to. I would also argue that the skill involved is broader, as one has to be able to drive on all kind of surfaces without really knowing what’s coming up.

If watching would be easier I’d definitely follow it a lot more. I’d probably still prefer F1, for reasons I can’t really explain. There’s something to F1 that one cannot find elsewhere, but I can’t quite put my finger on it ;).

On the article you should include the specularity factor, Ned. I mean, watch this video http://www.wrc.com/video/browse-all/mexico-2011-the-el-brinco-jump/?vid=2026&pg=1&srch_season=&srch_rallyid=&srch_teamid=-1&srch_driverid=-1 and compare the jumps of this one http://www.wrc.com/video/browse-all/mexico-2010-the-el-brinco-jump/?vid=1515&pg=1&srch_season=2010&srch_rallyid=2010-MEX&srch_teamid=-1&srch_driverid=-1 to the jumps on the first. They seem very different to me!

Ned, if you want to check out a rally it doesn’t have to be the WRC. If you hunt around there might be a local club rally you can go to first, it wont be quite as furious but you still get the sensation without the tavel costs.

I went to one a few years ago and it was great. Club rallies tend to have a huge range of cars – There were the obligatory Evos and Imprezas, some old FWD Saxo, Corsa etc ‘kit cars’, a load of Mini’s, Mk.II Escorts (nothing sounds better than a Mk.II Escort) and one chap was even running round in a Honda S800 Coupe!

Actually, me and my Dad went to the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish borders back in 2006, which apparently is a round of the British Rally Championship. I’m nowhere near as much of a car nut as you so that aspect of it doesn’t interest me so much, but it was still a great day out. There were loads of fans gathered around a jump- or yump as they call it for some reason- and I remember one driver managed to roll his car over it!

This is probably one of the mos amazing rally video’s I’ve seen. I’ve never been to see wrc live but would love to go, but I have gone to watch the north west rally championship along Blackpool prom for the past two years, which was great to watch especially this year because it was raining for most of it, plus it was sooo windy the sea was being blown onto where the rally cars were (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF_cG2jzu_8) which was quite amusing to watch :P

Wow! That McRae footage is incredible, better than any F1 onboard I’ve ever seen. Although I feel obliged to point out that he later crashed out of that rally so he was clearly driving beyond the limit! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qJ7BPcWpVY

This is one of my favourite onboards. I love watching him work the pedals and the walls of spectators are mental: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyVHj3sHVHQ

This isn’t strictly rallying, but it’s a rally car and the sheer speed and acceleration is unbelievable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY–2UTzom4
