Apparently in an interview for L’Equipe, Matton has said that Kubica rejected an offter from BMW to race in DTM.

M-Sport (former Ford rally team) and Citroen have officially asked FIA for permission to move the gear shift paddle from right to left side. They are supposed to get the answer before December 14th, Yves Matton (Citroen) confirmed that they are offering Kubica a car in the 2013 WRC season, it seems M-Sport is doing the same. Robert is WRC bound then, his choice of the team depends on the conditions he will be offered. Robert recently said, that he is not interested in short term contract as he doesn’t want to wake up at the end of 2013 campaign not knowing what he will do in 2014.

There is a precedent for this, but the way – the FIA has been known to allow teams to make changes to their cars that would normally break the homologation of that car in order to accomodate drivers with physical disabilities. Danish touring car driver Jason Watt is a paraplegic, but the FIA allowed SEAT to build a version of the Leon to accomodate him so that he could race in the World Touring Car Championship in 2009.

According to Polish sources (Mikołaj Sokół for major Polish portal onet.pl), FIA gave its permission to modify rally cars for Kubica, as requested by M-Sport and Citroen.

The French claim Kubica decided to sign with M-Sport for 2013 ERC championship season, excluding the season opening event. We are awaiting confirmation from Kubica’s camp.

That’s odd, because the request to move the gear stick specifically applied to WRC cars. The ERC uses Super 2000 regulations, which don’t require the use of a manual gearbox. The request is believed to have been made because of the extra strength required to work the gear stick. If Kubica was planning on joining the ERC, it makes no sense for Ford (and Citroen) to have made that request in the first place.

On the other hand, there were rumors circulating that Robert’s plans are as follows:
Several tarmac rounds of WRC with Citroen in DS3
Monte Carlo with Prodrive in Mini
Full season of ERC with M-Sport in Fiesta
Supposedly the source of this list is somewhere within Prodrive

Prodrive have already confirmed they will not be appearing in Monte Carlo. And a far as I am aware, Prodrive never put in a request to the FIA to modify the gear shift of the John Cooper Works WRC.

That said, Kubica could split his efforts between the WRC and ERC if he only wants to do the WRC’s tarmac events. Monte Carlo, Germany and France do not clash with any of the events on the ERC calendar, though he would have only four days to get from Rally France to Rally Sanremo.

Apparently Kubica has declined Mercedes’ offer to race in DTM and is going to go down the rally route. I think that is a shame quite frankly, as that seems to be giving up on F1. Oh well.

Kubica confirmed in Citroen’s European Rally Championship squad, driving a DS3:

I weighed up the different options before deciding on this programme. I kept in touch with Citroen Racing and both sides were keen to continue working together. I’m really pleased now to be able to return to top-level racing.

Taking part in Rally Islas Canarias will be an interesting challenge for me. I can’t wait to start racing, but I haven’t set myself any specific target. I still have a lot to learn in rallying and to improve I will need to rack up the miles on the stages.
