Wiechers-Sport will be staying in the WTCC with the possibility of running multiple cars. No drivers confirmed yet, they won two races last year with Stefano D’Aste as their sole entry.

At least they’ll be getting all the latest updates from SEAT and it’s a well funded drive. A bit of a shame at the same time though as I was eager to see the Winkelhock name return to the touring cars.

Note the team logo on the seat and the familiar face looking into the car… Are we set to see a Hamilton on the WTCC grid this year?

He could also be entering the BTCC Jack Sears Trophy, but then my understanding is STR have only got two cars at the moment. They had four but the two driven by Boardman and Newsham in the 2011 BTCC were sold, with two spares being converted into the current WTCC cars. Of course there are a few spare SEATs knocking around at the moment and it depends where the financial situation is looking like, it’s a big jump in terms of budget from Clios to S2000.

Stefano D’Aste has set up his own team which will run a BMW for him in 2013.

It will be interesting to see then who gets the Wiechers drive, there are a few decent drivers knocking around who deserve to be in the WTCC. It’s a shame Javier Villa and Michel Nykaer among others couldn’t return for the full season in 2012 due to budget issues.

Former STCC team NIKA Racing will enter the WTCC this year with a single Chevrolet Cruze. The team has made one-off appearances in the WTCC before, running cars for Leonel Pernia at the 2010 Race of Italy and then again for Rickard Rydell at the 2012 Race of Italy.

Seems like a good chance for NIKA Racing to get Alain Menu in their car. Menu already familiar with the Cruze and is currently without a seat for 2013…

Fredy Barth will race for Wiechers-Sport in their BMW having been a SEAT racer since the mid-2000s. It’s good to see him back in the championship full time (bar Portugal and Brazil as they clash with Le Mans related activities), he’s not a bad driver.
