  1. Verstappen is flying – just 0.5 seconds behind Hamilton fastest time but Max on older Softs and Hamilton on Ultra Softs

    1. I think it has been already – from Keith’s Austrian GP Track Preview, the fastest lap in any session was 1’06.228

  2. Hello everyone and welcome back for the second practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Hamilton set a scorching pace in the first session but Red Bull looked capable of keeping up with him. There were a fair few mistakes as well from several drivers.

  3. After a Long time, Is this fastest lap times so far in Austria or is there any faster times than what we currently have?

    1. He was 0.2 up on s2 though he messed up in final 2 corners but still not enough difference , Guess they are trying to improve a bit more

    1. I dont think the progress is there or atleast as it look to be noticeable yet i feel
They are 1.4sec off might dip that into less than a sec off in Here which is shortest lap time of all year. I hope and pray they made progress though

    1. Massively ? No
They are faster in S1 and most of the Merc time is coming from S1 over vettel
Hamilton did a 16.601 on SS but didn’t improved on that on US. Bottas though did 16.562 on US which is fastest S1 so far. Vettel also did a 16.729 on SS but couldn’t improve that on US.
They are much closer in S2/S3.

      1. I was looking at Vettel in S1 on US. It was a 16.8. Didn’t know he did 16.7 on SS. Still that’s a tenth slower and that is the difference here basically.

        1. Yes, but so is lewis though. All in all there isn’t big difference between US and SS. I guess its between 2-4 tenths unless Tomorrow proves other wise

          1. I don’t know , Vettel is running his Pu #1 but then again Merc are also on Low power mode. so they have more to unleash. I love this track hoping Qualification will be exciting

          2. Im not too sure about it as i read in twitter feed as it said Vettel will have his Pu#2 which had issues on Baku Saturday will be fitted tomorrow. As Vettel is using only 2 Pu’s that means he was Running Pu#1 or better ICE #1 which was forced to use in Baku Q and R

  4. SS vs US Comparison
HAM: 1:05.731 vs. 1:05.483 (0.248) – BOT: 1:05.700 vs. 1:05.699 (0.001) – VET: 1:05.852 vs. 1:05.630 (0.222) Bottas was up on S2 by 2 tenths and had a bad S3 due to running off in the penultimate corner.

  5. Hello everyone and welcome to F1 Fanatic Live for final practice ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

All drivers have nine sets of tyres left. The Mercedes, Ferrari, Haas and Sauber drivers have six new sets of ultra-softs, the rest have seven. All the drivers have one set of softs remaining and only Haas have put any running on those tyres.

  6. Ugh, the sky coverage is painful. They just are not talking about what is on the screen! Just talking about penlties, Baku and reading out comments. It is hard to believe Crofty is actually the commentater for what is on the screen. He just isn’t following what is happening. I’ve sometimes listened to it on BBC radio 5 live sports extra and watched Sky on mute and they talk much more related stuff to what is on the screen. Sky really should be better than this.Channel 4 are far better. Ben Edwards and Karun Chandhok on Channel 4 sound far more interested in what is happening and keep on topic!

    1. I bought nowtv for this month’s f1 races on sky. But it is painful. All about the incident. Every segment starts with that. We have a great season. Don’t let one stupid incident overshadow it. Although I am certain Vettel targeted Hamilton’s headrest pins 😂
Let’s get back to racing 🏁🏎

        1. They could get it back for Silverstone. It is a power circuit and considering all the boasting that McLaren are doing about their chassis, makes sense to be in best possible shape.

  7. Wondering if there’s different set-ups on the Ferraris. Raikkonen has been consistently half a second off Vettel, which is a fair margin at a track this short, and he’s 4kph down in the speed trap too.

    1. His front right brake appeard to fail with a load of dust. He then locked up and the front left managed to do the rest of the slowing down. You could see that the front right was just freely turning so there clearly was an issue. He then went back to the pits in 1st gear as he didn’t want to risk going fast.

      1. Yup just caught up with the replay . Guess their asymmetric breaking made issues as the right front brake temp is used alot to warm up the right front tire. It might have got too much overheat caused the brake disc to blow up

  8. Hello everyone and welcome to F1 Fanatic Live for the qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton’s penalty has taken some of the intrigue out of the battle for pole position but we should still have at least three drivers in the hunt. And perhaps one of the Red Bulls will pull out something special…

    1. They have been like this all year I think. I think Keith will sort it out sometime but it doesn’t matter that much. they seem to be incorrect by about 14 minutes.

        1. both have to be used for the race, and ham using early and outpacing reds is good for ham… also us is faster so ham using later should give him the advantage given he keeps pacing with leaders…

  9. Well its anticlimactic but after how it was said about directive hurt Ferrari, it looks like there isn’t any change what so ever. usually Merc has 1-2 tenths leg on Ferrari when they unleash every thing. Which shows again here

  10. Im really waiting for next week Qualification alot now. how much faster they could go considering they will have Super soft in there.

  11. Max is truly a sensation. Just 2.5 years into his F1 career, he is making grandstands full outside of his home country! Not since Hamilton’s debut in 2007 have I seen such frenzy for any driver. Truly special talents both of them.
I would love to have a Hamilton-Max pairing at Ferrari if/when Vettel decides to hang his boots.
A Ferrari-Hamilton-Max is the most potent crowd pulling proposition that can be..

      1. @keithcollantine
For once, that’s a hype I understand. I’ve rarely seen such a spectacular wet-weather driver (just google the last three words in quotation marks, the results speak for themselves), and he’s also shown some refreshingly aggressive moves. There’s no denying he’s a driver who stands out from the crowd, whether he’s reached the top tier yet, or not.

  12. Wehrlein’s pit lane start confirmed after a turbo change:

“As the turbocharger is of a different specification from the one originally used in qualifying the competitor is required to start from the pit lane and should follow the procedures laid out in Article 36.2 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

  13. Hello from a deserted bar in Ermones, Corfu. On holiday from the UK and had to find somewhere to watch the GP, haven’t missed one is 5 years… #LH44

    1. He is secured by Acronis. And he is much faster than Sainz. And he is having most mechanical failures again this year, so pretty much Marko understands it.

    1. Ver and Sai ruined their races by their own. If Sai wouldn’t sleep the start Kvyat wouldn’t go off to dirt, so would be able to break with clear tyres.

    1. It’s not a jump start. They’re saying on Sky, you can’t “anticipate the start” but I don’t think you can prove that either way.

  14. By the way, why don’t we get to see a table of the reaction times of all drivers at the start? The data clearly exists so why not show us it? I’d love to see reaction time, 0-100 time, first 200m time etc

    1. “If a sprinter moves within 0.1s of the pistol, this is considered to be a false start, as it is impossible for them to have reacted that fast.” Interesting article.

  15. Update on Max’s start: there was an issue with the clutch already with the formation lap. At the real start the clutch was gone, so he got into anti stall. So again technical failure for Max.

  16. are they still concidering a penalty for Bottas’s start? I think that will just be too harsh. That was nothing like other jump starts that I can remember. Like Ericsson one time in 2015 and Maldonado in Spa 2012. They will have been huge advantages. Bottas barely did anything unusual, just a quicker reaction than others, which is a good thing!

      1. Well.. he has to drive in dirty air – sliding more than others in free air. It’s a bit different. Let’s see if the traction is holding up enough over several laps to make a move.

      1. The leaders were lapping well. They did struggle compared to the SS of Hamilton. But with reduced fuel load, it should have helped theoretically.

      1. Well yeah but he also had much older tyres and Bottas had new ones. There wasn’t much he could have done there.

    1. 30+ lap tyres vs brand new ones. I agree with you but I think it’d have been easy pass if it was other way around as well.

    1. Wish they’d experiment with a split-screen, one half with a battle, each.
We see it to compare quali laps, so what about in-race?

  17. Red bull ring and spa look like little sub machine guns.

Spa in particular looks like the uzi

Red bull ring looks like a tommy gun.

    1. Interesting to see him trying to look past glare on it while sitting in garage, trying to look at screen on other side of it. Wonder how Singapore, sun reflecting on it, work then.

      1. Buxton mentioned on Twitter that Seb reported blurred view too, possibly because of the needed thickness to withstand/absorb impacts. That glare is going to be a huge issue with lights and with a low sun. Still needs quite a bit of on track time to make it work IMO.

  18. So, on Sky, di Resta was just now saying he want open cockpits so we can see helmets etc. I have to say, from my experience last weekend in Austria, having been quite close to the track, that really doesn’t work super currently for people at the track: most designs are too cluttered and therefore become a blur of something.

In concreto (and sorry for a bit of a rant) HAM’s yellow is great, idenitifyable (hence can recognize BOT from not being him), VET white works (and thus Kimi is the other …), kvy/sai/ric/ver – too much RBR to distinguiguish at speed; MAS: that neon-yellow swoosh on top works (and !=stroll) ; Hulk/Palmer: meh, FI – both shades of pink, nvm. ERI/WEH – light/yellow vs. darker, okayish. So for identifying drivers, that’s not great is it? But I agree good to see head, though shield doesn’t imair that too much, I think.

By the way, other ways to identify drivers, by those numbers, again from Austria experience? Yeah, 33 vs 3 at speed is sometimes doable; 77/44 works bc. colour, Ferrari 5/7 bit small but good contrast; Sauber okayish on sidepod; FI,Williams, Haas, Renault – useless. McLaren unreadable too, too cleverly small (very McLaren?).

      1. Agree very much; oh, STR – the red on dark blue numbers are hard to spot too, didn’t help at all. Also, FIA needs to decide where number should go and how big, specific place on all cars so we know where to look.

      2. Exactly, the way Red Bull makes those numbers stand out works really well, like they do in NASCAR. The abbreviations are hard to read at speed and magnified by things like using unreadable red (STR), the placing of them (McLaren and FI) or not having great contrast (Haas) and being too small to read at speed (Renault, Sauber).
The boldly lined RBR numbers work great, the Ferrari number in a badge makes it stand out enough to read too. That should be the approach on all cars for next year IMO

  19. Glad to see more T-cams are being used by the director instead of those retro shoulder-view cameras. Here’s hoping this trend will continue.

  20. Red Bull do not look anywhere near Mercedes this weekend so far, do they. Being half a second off with the softer tyres … Hamilton now about as fast as Bottas though, and Ferrari seems to be slowly building up their speeds too.

      1. Oh, they asked him abt. Silverstone contract, he said it was a great track but BRDC did everything wrong with new part, esp. wing – Hill: yeah, FOM wanted a building like that, and some other ways it turned out aren’t ideal, but came out of all the multiple demands on the track; brundle pitched in too.

        1. From my Calculation the SS is over 3-5 tenths advantage on average but thats not enough though we can see much faster times when the track rubbers in and they take fuel out

  21. Hamilton with out his mistake at maggots and becketts and considering his S3 time he can do a 28.0-28.2 Which is mighty impressive for these cars. I guess when every thing is off we might see 26 mid to high.

  22. From the onboards with speedo meter i observed that they are cutting out the H after they exit the Abby,Copse and Stowe . I didn’t remember this last year, Guess they used to have bit more braking zone which helped them to gain K which negated H deficit. now they can’t , its time i guess we can term Silverstone as Engine Track rather than Aero track given how H becoming even more predominant

    1. indeed. No use risking damage to the cars. Surprising that McLaren sends out Stoffel. Did he have an issue they repaired an now want to see everything is working?

      1. Yes, generally the improvement from FP3 to Qualifying is around 1 second, but this time it might be around 1.5 as FP3 was partially wet, which means that we possibly didn’t get to see the usual one-lap pace improvement from FP2 to FP3.

  23. Evening all from Bangkok. Looks like Q is going to be a bit more interesting with grid drops for both Battas and Ricardo. Should make for an even more interesting race tomorrow.

  24. “Stoff and the team navigate the twists and turns of Silverstone’s iconic circuit.” From the McLaren Tweet… I wonder if he walks slower than Alonso as well?

      1. This is exciting for me, I don’t have a clue as to what’s actually happening on the track unless someone tells me! I love it! It’s like a blind date!

    1. Yeah, he’ll still battle with RIC for last spot I guess (depends on when penalty is counted?), but perfectly done by Alonso and McLaren, great story and great to see the crowd response!

    1. Honestly, with his 30 spots grid drop, he could have just not bothered after his first lap. But I think these are the little thrills he keeps himself amused with, having just a few hundreds to spare to even be able to get a lap in and nail it with the best time. Great moment.

  25. That was a magical one minute and 38 seconds. ALO the only driver on a live lap at the death, lighting the timing screens up, and duly takes P1 in Q1. As meaningless as it is, the crowd erupting really made that lap something.

    1. If Keith will allow, this is a great timing feed website. I always use it and now when I have no TV or fast internet, it is extremely valuable. Remove spaces: f1. tfeed. net /live

  26. Bottas 2 tenths quicker than the Ferraris while being on a harder tyre is depressing from the championship perspective

    1. My apologies is my post end up in the wrong place, but the internet speed I have to work with at the moment is slower and less dependable than a Minardi.

  27. Given that Romain improved on his next lap and stewards are generally not so punishing these days, my guess is 2 penalty points + 5 second penalty to be served on 1st pit stop (at the worst)

  28. Mark my words! Ricciardo will win this race from P19 on the grid. I know that’s a very brave/risky prediction, but you never know what might happen.

  29. Based on the word “you never know what will happen in a race”, I would like nominate pascal wehrlein to win Silversone GP 2017. So sauber probably can maintain existence by better prize money😂😂

  30. Hello everyone and welcome to F1 Fanatic Live for the British Grand Prix which will get underway in half an hour.

Conditions are dry at Silverstone ahead of the race but there is a risk a shower may hit the track.

      1. Hi, from a peninsular+island country Malaysi. Sad to say this year is my last year to see F1 at home soil😥😥😥

        1. I find the Red Bull ring really tough to get a rhythm. Driving it in rFactor 2 and Automobilista anyway. Silverstone I have no probs at all, same with Spa.

          1. One problem for Silverstone for me is that the old main straight always confuses me when I am on a lap. I lose situational awareness as I am puzzled why there are 2 start/finish points on a single lap.

  31. Well this is looking tasty. The early Safety Car means there’s no gap for the front runners to drop into so they’ll be stuck out for a bit. Bottas is edging towards Vettel who’s stuck behind Verstappen…

      1. I agree they have double standards. For example Hamilton absolutely cheated on the start a couple years ago but he was in contention and the stewards literally said they didn’t want a silly mistake like that to take him out of the championship. So yeah.. :P

  32. To me, it looked like when Kvyat started to overtake Sainz, Sainz effectively left him little choise but to drive onto the grass. And at the speed he was going, surely you have to try and rejoin as quick as possible. Although I agree what he did was dangerous. But I still think Sainz was partly responsible for him going on the grass in the first place. I’d have called it a raceing incident but it’s up the them.

  33. Bottas behind Vettel is in favour of Verstappen, who has nothing to lose. It’s either a safe and boring 5th, or fighting for 3rd/4th with risks.

  34. Raikkonen seems to be closing in slightly to Hamilton. Would be nice to see him win a race, although I think Hamilton is just saving his tyres currently.

  35. Man this is boring as hell. Mercs 0.5s faster than Ferrari. And Ferrari 0.3s faster than RBR. Top teams never overtake unless you are Mercedes and have super quali mode.

    1. Maybe you want to find yourself a different sport to watch? The only thing I ever see you comment on is how bad, boring, tedious etc the races are.
In contrast, I see a tense race with Verstappen holding off Vettel, Ricciardo storming up the field, Bottas making headway and Hamilton keeping the advantage up front.

    1. Will be interesting to see what they do this time. With Verstappen jumping past Vettel earlier, they couldn’t do the pincher movement on Hamilton.

    1. Yeah, another slow RBR pit stop. Ridiculous that Merc, Fer and Will can do 2.0-2.2 pit stops without any fault and RBR can’t.

  36. Yes overtake in pits. Again my point. Top teams never overtake unless you are Mercedes and have super quali mode. Or 2sec faster than car ahead.

    1. Doesn’t matter. RBR can’t match the Ferrari race pace, somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 sec slower. This was the only way to TRY and keep position.

  37. So Kimi cannot continuously match Hamilton’s pace. Vettel is flying without Verstappen in front (0.5 sec faster) and Bottas is making up ground towards Raikkonen. It seems the only battle for the rest of the race is Vettel vs. Bottas and later on maybe both vs. Raikkonen.

    1. That’s what I thought as well. Bottas should be let in front and control the pace. If Hamilton can then easily match him, let them swap.

  38. What strikes me these days is we almost never see any risky strategies. Strategies are so darn safe, always covering the other guy. That’s too bad.

  39. Heard they said that VET requesting RAI to stay another year if he’s to sign contract extension. How can that play out with Arrivabene?

      1. Depends David, if it’s something like Hamilton in Baku, it could potentially be dangerous or causing discomfort during steering for example. This could play into the hands of Vettel and Verstappen.

  40. By the way @keithcollantine I think there’s an issue with the times displayed. When the last comment by LAK was posted at 13:43 it actually was 13:58. I thought I missed 15 mins of comments, so refreshed, but then I saw LAK’s comment coming in. ;-)

    1. I asked kieth about this at the start of the year I think. He said it was on the to do list but it isn’t the most critical thing. It does confuse me sometimes though!

      1. I see Ben. Indeed, not critical, but confusing at least.
Must be on the server/hosting side, have seen this somewhere else where they commented about a mismatch in time between the different systems.

  41. Those moments your divided between the individual result and the championship: I hope Bottas can get to a podium, but I also want Vettel to keep his advantage in the WDC as much as possible. :/

    1. If Mercedes manages to stay faultless, it will be only a matter of time that Hamilton takes a dominant lead in the championship. The Mercedes is the faster car on average.

Without any issues, Hamilton would be leading right now already.

      1. @xenomorph91 That’s not true. The faster car on average this season is Vettel, seeing the WDC standings. Mercedes still have to prove they can overtake Vettel in the WDC and keep it that way.

  42. Carlos Sainz, interviewed by Dutch tv says the incident with Kvyat was “clear as everyone could see” but he also says “I think it’s best not to comment in public and keep this internal with the team”.
Someone is trying to get the team on his side…

  43. Well, I don’t think Massa is doing a bad job here, but the fact the Williams is only slightly faster than a bad McLaren must mean that Williams is no longer a decent team. Such a shame. Hopefully it will be good at some tracks.

    1. Serious question. Would you prefer f1 to be a spec series ?

Personally I find it impossible to find a good balance between driver ability and technology/ money.

  44. i just would like to know how can a team as legendry as it is accept that their cars are backmarkers for a season long, how can someon sleep when they are 2.8 sec offf the pace…what is honda still doing as an engine supplier here?

  45. Luckily the oil burning is prohibited from 2018 onwards, because even Merc doesn’t have so much speed advantage in regular race mode. Bloody hell….

  46. Verstappen 1.4 sec faster a lap than Vettel. If Vettel’s tryes are really destroyed, he might catch him at the end.

  47. Here’s hoping for some final laps action. It’s boring since the pit stops, very very boring. Have not commented this much since a while. ;-)

      1. If both Ferrari drivers had this issue, it could very likely have been the same for Verstappen. If they didn’t do it and it happened, you would probably wonder why they didn’t do the same with him. To me, for safety reasons, it was the right decision.

  48. Matching Clark, having a race from pole, leading all laps and setting the FLAP … On top of that, Vettel only gets home in 7th. I think Hamilton can be very happy with this weekend

  49. Interesting, so Mercedes did see a tiny start of an issue forming on their cars too. I think Ocon had a bit of that developing a bit earlier in the race too. Looks like it will be something Pirelli should have a look at.

    1. Really, was that on CH4? On RTL.DE Lauda said strategy and tyre wear all worked perfectly, but, he’s not the expert on tyres of course, nor does he always go for the full truth, I don’t think.

  50. On EJ saying RIC, VER probably the most exciting combination – after what Bottas shown in the last few races, I found myself thinking the HAM,BOT combination is also really quite good. But, that first lap by VER, wow. I didn’t see it live, but just now saw repeats, that was something.

    1. I had my self thinking that over too with EJs remark. But I think that really Max is more exciting to see, although Bottas has shown that he is quite the worth Rosberg replacement. Now only 23 points of Vettel too.

      1. Yep, Bottas is a silent killer, more than a thrilling experience. Still, I imagine Mercedes is plenty satisfied with their two drivers today. And Kimi also showed Ferrari that he’s valuable to them, I guess!

        1. This year, I think Kimi has been more or less perfect for Ferrari. I am sure that had Max not been in between, they would have happily made Kimi have “a problem with hte floor” or something to wait and let Seb pass him before then being passed by Max too and getting critisized for losing motivation and being a few spots back.
