    So here it is: http://www.fia.com/2014-fia-f1-world-championship-entry-list

So, not many surprises. Vettel taking a famous and successful number and for some reason Maldonados choice makes me at the same time amused and worried.

First it needs to be analysed what exactly caused the defect. It could be caused by a variety of things. One of them being that the construction or rubber is not durable enough and needs to be improved. It is good to have a test now to determine that and make the necessary changes in order to have good tires for the winter tests next year.

It is interesting, but the shape doesn’t really look exactly like a LaFerrari, neither exactly like an Enzo. The back looks more like an MC12. The engine sounds interesting, quite angry, not bad. Maybe Ferrari are trying to actually make use of one of their million dollar developments and build a V6T for one of their road cars.
Or they finally man up and try to do something to win again ;). Mercedes’ ‘driver evaluation’ a week after the season is over sounds interesting, too.

Mercedes have the telemetry and all I hear from them is that they are very happy with both of them and their ability to beat each other. I also think Rosberg can beat Hamilton over a lap even when they are both doing fine. He had some great performances in Williams, his qualifying in China last year was great, besting everyone by half a second and this years Monaco and especially Singapore laps were fantastic, the latter maybe one of the best he ever produced.
(During the race by the way there is a lot to suggest Rosberg can be more focused on overall race performance instead of driving performance each lap but sometimes, to me, it feels like he isn’t as much of a fighter but maybe it’s just that he tries not to destroy the tyres.)
Maybe, probably Hamilton can go faster over a single lap more consistently but I don’t think Rosberg isn’t a good match for him.

If there is a chance to exploit something in the rules, the teams will do it. I’m sure teams have tried various designs and if they found out that this kind of design brings air under the car in the best way there is only physics to blame and one shouldn’t do that.
If the FIA wanted to have a design resembling the lower McLaren noses they could have worded the rules in order to achieve that. Nobody here or in teams demanded that only a small cross section has to be low, why not determine that the “entire width” (width to be determined somewhere around the suspension and 80% of that to be determined as entire width, transition to that part can only be done in constant radius slopes – or something like that, there are billions of ways to determine something will look the way you want it to) has to be below 185mm at the front?
I wouldn’t blame FIA for not foreseeing that teams will try to exploit the rules in that way but I wouldn’t blame the teams for doing it either. The only thing that needs to be done is change the misdirected rule which one should seriously have done earlier since most teams start to change most of their staff to the development of the new cars in september. Hindsight is a beautiful thing.

Sure this needs to be punished in order to prevent teams from taking risks, but how about some improvement to manage this. Have a mark on the fast lane that shows, when a car went past that point and you release yours now, you will clash. You could go as far as building it into an automated system, just like when a mechanic didn’t push a button to indicate he is done the light won’t turn green, when a car is somewhere between two light barriers it won’t turn on either. Maybe I’m thinking too technically, it doesn’t happen that often after all.

I don’t see why this should be so difficult for the self proclaimed most technically advanced sport in the world. Raising the minimum weight of the car in general isn’t very useful as a 10kg lighter driver will still have 10kg more weight to shuffle around inside the car.
What I think is more sensible: Driver plus seat must weight no less than 85kg (or whatever people think is best). The weight of the seat must be evenly distributed, same density to the material across its entirety (or if there are concerns thats to heavy for safely extracting the driver in case of an accident, make the seat two layered with the inner layer as it is and the outer “weight-layer” removable).

It is true, in most sports it is important to physically be a good fit to the requirements of the sport, but for example in football there are many different kinds of players that can be world class (sometimes because they are different), in ski jumping rules have been amended to better reflect the diversity of the field and in F1 it could be rather simple to make it a bit more fair, then why not?

I don’t see any chance for that but I’m delighted that he actually won. It was the fifth time he went into a season finale with a shot at the title and finally he made it.

Mercedes should be the most likely option. McLaren and Mercedes should be among the best teams and ForceIndia should establish itself as one of the best midfield teams. Unless Lotus surprises us immensely that should be enough to fend off Renault.
Or how about a surprise awesome Sauber, fighting for the podium while Ferrari have a 2002/04 season :-D .. I know, won’t happen.

    So I say Mercedes too.

I think this livery looks excellent but the traditional M colors are great too. They aren’t just random “fugly” colors as some may think, they are Estoril blue, velvet blue and Imola red – pure racing. And white was originally Germanys color (still is in many sports) until the origin of the silver arrows. Its history and racing pedigree on a car. I should go write BMWs press releases :-P

Well, Porsche got a lot of credit and therefore a lot of good advertising in the McLaren TAG Porsche “era”. That of course weren’t 5 titles and 25 won races for Porsche, but still they got credit and recognition for it, so I don’t see why that shouldn’t work again.
They are already building engines for sportscars and a kind of motorsport, so I suppose it shouldn’t be THAT big a step to build engines for F1 aswell but Keiths argument is valid, it’d be unusual to see a manufacturer have works teams in different sports (by the way, wouldn’t a Ferrari works team in LeMans be a nice thing again?). VW built engines for F3 so they might use their own brand. Still I’d like Porsche engines best.

(as a guest speaker in a seminar this semester we had a chief exec from Rothschild and he discussed a deal VW made where he mentioned that they will have billions (with a b) to spend in the next couple of years (for tax reasons and security etc reasons). So instead of investing all of it in acquisitions they might free up some of it for motorsports, but I’ll believe it when I see it.)

I’d be content about Porsche as an engine supplier, but somehow I’d dislike them as an dntire team. Auto Union would be more to my liking as a team but they don’t own that name anymore.
In general I feel more engine suppliers would be a good thing. It keeps costs down for the development (no aero) but if its a good engine it still provides good advertising (and some lose change as payments for providing the engines) and possibly some useful research results. Then again, there should be more room to differentiate, otherwise there isn’t much room to show your particular value without running a team.
As Rudi Völler said: Tear out a hair off your behind and you’ll have a tear in your eye .. everything is connected ..

I’m playing GPRO and its a great game. I didn’t have a lot of time lately which is a real problem if you want to make progress here but of all the ones I tried its definitely the best.

Maybe there are people out there who have a different opinion. Maybe the people working at Renault actually liked working with him, maybe the data they had showed that he actually did a good job, maybe people think that its hard to look good against someone with a 12 race advantage knowing the car and the tyres. Or maybe he is a bad driver. There are a lot of things that different people evaluate differently and some of us may come to the conclusion that Senna doesn’t deserve another chance.
We will see what Williams decide, if he and his sponsors are good enough for them or not.

There are people who believe he must be awesome because of his name amd there are lots of people who think he must be rubbish because all he has is the name. Clearly both are wrong.

The way I see it he is fine. He was clearly better than Chandhok in GP2 and the way I saw the season he was faster in that HRT aswell. Considering that he came into the car with only six races to go he was fine in the Renault aswell. In qualifying he looked very good compared to Petrov, in the races he seemed to struggle with the tyres, not always getting them to work at their full potential which I think is normal for someone who could barely test them and he made some pretty stupid mistakes but thats nothing experience wouldn’t change. He is not brilliant but not bad either. Sadly (for him) there are lots of drivers out there like that but luckily (for him) he can sure motivate quite a few people/companies from Brazil to help him out financially. We will see but I have my doubts about us seeing him in a car next year (even though I wouldn’t mind it at all).
