I guess to a very small degree, they have, mainly in terms of the run-off. When I first started watching in 97-98, you’d see the driver punished for making a mistake and having to unceremoniously bumble across the grass and gravel to try and make it back on track.

There’s no greater turn off for me personally than seeing the drivers lock their brakes in practice/qualifying, and simply cruise through the asphalt run-off area. It makes the drivers look so second rate, and the sport look too forgiving.

The grass and gravel added hugely to the unpredictability. If you go off now, you’re almost guaranteed to find a way back on.

Funny you should say that, Keith, I had a similar conversation with my girlfriend (a new fan) at the start of the race. The conversation went something like this:

Me: “Amazing start from Fernando – up to 7th!”
Lauren: “That’s brilliant, go on, Fernando!”
Me: “Only a matter of time til he’s passed, though..”
Lauren: “Why? Don’t be so negative!”
Me: “No, no.. it’s the DRS here. It’s so long. He doesn’t stand a chance.”

And with that, he was picked off one-by-one. Cue me ranting about the art of defensive driving being completely gone in modern F1. Half of a truly great driver’s skill-set is null and void. What a sham(e).

I’d still much prefer the pre-95 version.

I mean, we’ve had Imola quite a few times on modern day consoles, but never really the old Imola.

Plus, that blast from the start-finish down to Tosa was way too awesome.. The chicanes there are pretty crap.

Yep, saw the video today. Really gutted with that. Sure I read somewhere it was pre-chicanes…

I’d like to see more ‘Changing Tracks’ was it..? The feature about how tracks have changed over the years. Mega enjoyed them.

Also Keith, not sure if it’d help at all but i’m happy to discuss any ideas for a podcast if you needed a hand?

    Cheers,
    Dan

I’d just like to mention that this is on Motors TV, too….

Best of luck, Keith – you’ll be great!

    Fantastic news.

Given the tragedies of last year, you could understand if IndyCar went quite defensive with their rules in regards to blocking/manouvering, but instead they’ve allowed their racers to take responsibility and do what they do best.

It was this rule last year that made me not want to watch the rest of the season. Seeing someone get penalised for defending was very difficult to watch as a racing fan.

Unfortunately, I gave IndyCar another chance at Las Vegas. Wasn’t great timing in the end :(

Saying that, i’m really stoked for the new season, what with the nice new cars (hey, just my opinion) and potentially seeing Rubens over there, along with Alesi for the Indy 500. Can’t wait!

I’m fairly good on Photoshop yet I cannot fathom how you manage to conjure up such creative images.

    Immensely impressive!

I think i’d like a few myself, too.

    Two things surprise me:

*The sheer amount of people saying F1 ’97 (not a knock, it’s a classic)
    *No one mentioning rFactor

I had a brilliant experience a few weeks ago where I was lucky enough to experiment with a Formula One simulator. They used rFactor for it. But not just there, I was also lucky enough to visit Apex Circuit Design last year where they also used rFactor for their simulations/mock-ups.

Yeh, the new nose regulations look absolutely appauling. All chassis must sport a ‘broken nose’ look :(

I actually thought the 2009 F1 cars had it right (as far as modern day F1 chassis go…).

Now, on to Indy Car. Afterall, that’s what the topic’s about, I suppose!

I actually like these. I know i’m pretty much alone on that one as they’ve already received alot of criticism, but I quite like them!

Yeh it looks like Senna at Adelaide in 1993 (I think) – the absolutely rain soaked one.

    Might have even been 1992.

    It’s certainly not Hamilton!

So first of all F1 wanted rid of the privateers. Next, they wanted all nicely painted tracks that look all pretty. Then they don’t want the new teams because they won’t have the money to be competitive. Now, they don’t want the fans watching, no?

I pay 2k for a nice LCD television to watch HD content on for my two favourite sports (F1 and professional wrestling). WWE had sorted HD long ago, yet F1 I thought, would have sorted it for 2009. No, we wait til 2010. No? 2011? Ok…

After one year of HD and F1 presented in a fantastic fashion, that’s all I get.

I pay for Virgin, because fortunately, I quite like football, too. But because i’m getting the Sky Sports package on Virgin, I don’t get it in HD. Ok. I pay more for it, because afterall, I paid 2k for the television to watch HD on. Then I hear F1’s going to Sky. Hoping it’s HD, no extra charge etc.

Now I hear no HD, just to make me pay 200 quid to break off of my Virgin contract. Unbelievable.

What more do you want from me?!

People think i’m overreacting, but if we shell out so much to watch stuff in HD like it was designed to be, then after just one ponsy year, I now can’t?! It’s pathetic.

Bernie’s not just content turning fans away from wanting to watch a GP in the Middle East somewhere, but now he doesn’t want eyes on his sport full stop.

Ok. You be happy with the elitists then!

In a way, i’d agree. Heinsight’s such a strange thing.

I actually love the 80’s layout (even with the end chicane). It was so unique, so quick. I’d love to see how a modern F1 race would pan out there now.
