28th March 2013, 5:45 at 5:45 am #230643F1YankeeParticipanta conventional floating gauge is borderline useless in any street car. that’s not an exaggeration – you can only get a relatively accurate measurement on a stationary car on level ground. race car tanks are baffled to lessen fuel sloshing around, which upsets handling and starves the fuel pickups, making a float unusable anyway.
instead of a float, they carefully meter the amount of fuel pumped out of the fuel cell. fuel returned to the cell from fuel injection excess and cooling circulation is also metered.
no fuel gauge is used in the car because it’s redundant. the information is relayed to the pits, and they advise the driver accordingly. having a gauge would only take up valuable space and driver attention. i hazard to guess the digital readout in any f1 car can be set to display a rough fuel level if needed in an emergency situation.

26th March 2013, 8:34 at 8:34 am #229558F1YankeeParticipanti would not be surprised if webbo does not see the end of 2013 with red bull, either his choice or theirs. if anyone over there has another reason to complain, he’s out right away. rbr has been 100% vettel’s team since before he got there.
what i find most distasteful isn’t team orders (a favorite among you guys i know) or even vettel’s lack of respect/sportsmanship, it’s the litany of lame excuses and phony apologies that followed. you knew exactly what you were doing and you’re not sorry, you’re sorry you have to hear it. perhaps he’s sorry his veneer of innocence has been stripped.

16th March 2013, 5:21 at 5:21 am #228687F1YankeeParticipanti forget where i read it, but a mclaren person explained they have already reached the maximum of the previous chassis’ development. while 2+ seconds off now, surely they will be comparable to the fastest cars at some point in the season.
i went through the 2013 sporting and technical regulations, but i can’t find any language relating to homologation of chassis/survival cells. engines yes, chassis no.
strangely i did find (tech) article 15.1 (permitted materials) which outlaws the coolest thing on earth, carbon nanotubes:
13) Carbon fibres manufactured from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor which have :
– a tensile modulus ¡Â 550GPa ;
– a density ¡Â 1.92 g/cm ;
– unidirectional or planar reinforcement within their pre-impregnated form, not including three dimensional weaves or stitched fabrics (but three-dimensional preforms and fibre reinforcement using Z-pinning technology are permitted) ;
– no carbon nanotubes incorporated within the fibre or its matrix ;
– a permitted matrix, not including a carbon matrix.27th January 2013, 19:02 at 7:02 pm #224141F1YankeeParticipantI think mostl likely it will be Bulls. Why? Becaue there are no massive rule changes and Newey probably has done a good job this winter.
until they get beaten badly on a regular basis and/or dissolve, i don’t see how any other conclusion can be made. cheer on whoever you like, but red bull remains the hot ticket.
