There are some positives and negatives to take from this.
Racing was actually quite good despite what is probably the worst city circuit layout I have seen – all 90 degrees turns and straights broken by artificial chicanes. I didn’t mind the sound – they sound really futuristic but the music they played during the race wasn’t my cup of tea.
I’m glad I didn’t notice fan boost and I hope they will just take it behind the barn and let it out of it’s misery.
Director needs to improve though, on start he was focusing on completely wrong parts of the field and he was completely lost during car change. I still have no idea how Heidfeld gained a position during it and it was a shame they need to switch cars at all as there was a five-driver battle for lead going on right before the stops.I’ll tune in for next race, the series look promising.
I wonder how precisely are blue flags shown. Are they triggered (for example) when the driver who is about to lap them is under a second behind them? Sometimes marshals are showing blue flags when the leaders are barely visible in the mirrors and they must really get out of the way to let them pass.
Scraping the blue flag rule would be bad, especially with the amount of b teams and “technical partnerships” on the grid at the moment. Imagine for example Torro Rosso letting Red Bull car through but then aggressively defending position against the other cars. And that is only the most obvious connection between the teams.
Blue flag situations should be precisely defined – something along the lines of measuring the gap at measuring points (we already have at least 4 of those on every track) and if the gap is less then a second the slower car must let the faster car pass in next 3 turns.Sane proposal: pit-stop competition
Insane proposal:
Every car is ready to start from the pits, each driver starts from his pit and has to run the full lap before he reaches his pit again, climbs into the car and starts the race. That way they can show they are trully great athletes.
From what I saw I found the action a little bit artificial when I found out about the rule when you can’t defend an overtaking move. I did like movable camera on top of the cars though, it gives much better view of the action then a fixed one.
I liked the all-blue nose better but I would have gone with blue all the way and lose even the white top of the nose.
Croatian television is way ahead of you – they canceled the broadcast of entire season! They must have had an inside scoop about it though, things were just starting to boil in Tunisia.
Joking aside, I don’t really see this boycott being effective, you can do it for personal reasons but don’t expect much. I think there won’t be a Bahrain Grand Prix next month anyway (can they reschedule towards the end of the season maybe?)
Kubica has same quality Alonso has – he can extract more performance from midfield car then other drivers. Once he gets a car that can challenge for the wins at every race he will be a very strong championship contender. Rosberg is a good driver as well but I don’t really see him pushing the car beyond its limits. He keeps his head down and does a good job – he is humiliating Schumacher this season after all but he lacks the spark that will push him a bit extra towards the goal. Besides, while in Williams he failed to capitalize when opportunity presented itself (Badoer-like mistake when cruising towards podium finish or even challenging for a win at Singapore).
My vote goes to Kubica as I think he has that certain “ingredient X” which I don’t see in Rosberg.
Rule changes are also there to limit potentially dangerous technical innovations. Ground effect was banned because drivers were suffering too big g-forces in corners and there were even cases of them falling unconscious because of too high g-forces. Teams always find new ways to get competitive advantage – just look at double deck diffusers and f-duct in last 2 seasons.
As a Williams fan I think that would be a bad idea. I follow GP2 championship and last year when Maldonando (in his third gp2 season) was teammate with Hülkenberg in ART German rookie after few races of learning the ropes blew him out of the water. This season of GP2 suffered from a drop in quality that happens cyclically – 4 drivers who were on the top of the championship last year left and there was a power vacuum in which Maldonando in his 4th season flourished.
If such deal really happens it means Williams need cash more then he needs performance from its drivers. I hope this stories are merely a way to force Wili Webber to agree to lower price for next year’s contract for his protegee.
I only went to one race so I don’t have much experience. I bought them from http://www.formula1.com as I don’t trust every site out there with my credit card info. I especially don’t trust sites that are selling tickets to races which aren’t released on sale yet – they usually start the sale during winter and you can subscribe for FOM to send you e-mail when desired race is available. Sometimes if you book early you can even get a discount but it is dependent on track promoter.
I don’t like the glow in the dark part – it is just a gimmick. Only thing more stupid in helmet livery aspect was Heidfields black helmet that changes color when it heats up…
It looks interesting, reminds me of Turkey in few corners – if there are also elevation changes (turn one is mentioned in article to be uphill) then track could be good. Turns 10-12 remind me of last sector in Montreal (minus the Wall of Champions of course,this track will have runoff area…)
I really wonder something – when was the last time that the track was introduced and corners actually had names instead of numbers? Singapore tried to name some corners, I can’t recall any recent case…
