“In solidarity, I also get angry with Croft, but mainly cos he misses so much then gets excited about something that he’s wrong about anyway!”
Tell me about it, I think I probably annoy my family even more by shouting at the idiot on the TV as if he can hear me. I don’t remember getting annoyed at the commentators for any other series, even John Watson occasionally says something of value.

The issue seems to be people more interested in football commentating on F1, Legard was the same (although he did seem to be earnestly trying to learn whereas Croft has never improved). When they get overexcited about every little thing it undermines the emotion when something actually exciting happens.

Surprised so many people are ranking Ocon above Perez, some by quite a margin, considering Perez was the leading Force India for almost twice as many laps. I was impressed by his speed and consistency, but I didn’t see enough racecraft from him to consider him ‘the next big thing’. It’s interesting that while Verstappen is constantly being criticized for being involved in racing incidents, nobody comments when it happens to Ocon.

Having said that, I do think Perez was responsible for the Spa crash, and brought the Baku crash upon himself by his selfish actions in Montreal.

I don’t have time to do a full list right now, but I think the Force India drivers would be around the bottom end of the top ten for me.

    @flatsix

Lewis has undoubtedly operated on another level than 2014-2016 (for me) but would he be where he is now if Rosberg had stayed.

This is a good question. I think the mind games with Rosberg were a distraction for Hamilton. Especially after Monaco 2014 I think his focus was more on beating Rosberg than winning for himself, because he felt Nico was playing dirty. This year he’s definitely more at ease, even when Bottas was winning there was no stress there, and when Vettel tried pushing his buttons he didn’t react poorly.

Sportsmanship is a big thing for Hamilton. To me it seems like he can deal with drivers from other teams playing tricks, but when it comes from inside his team, or from the sport’s governance, it gets to him.

Wow, big catch for Indycar (for people in the know at least). Looking forward to see how he does.

I don’t think there’s much you can do when there’s a spike in comments, it’s unfeasible to moderate and obviously people just appearing once to post their opinion won’t be interested in rules or punishments.

For the most part I think it’s fairly civil when traffic is slow, you get the odd troll fishing for arguments but other than aggressive moderation (which would likely upset people) the best way to dis-encourage it is to refuse to engage. It’s also up to the regular commenters to help build a friendly atmosphere when they debate amongst themselves.

Yeah Ocon and Perez is an interesting one. Pretty much every race they run together with Perez in front, but you have to ask yourself whether Perez should be expected to do better than that against someone in their first full season.

Definitely seems to have lost a lot of (visual at least) weight compared to the current car, although no doubt some of that is down to the speedway aero. Looks like a proper piece of kit.

There’s no way McLaren could afford to manufacture their own engines, you’re talking of adding hundreds of millions to their running costs to achieve something actual engine manufacturers are struggling with. They don’t even build their road car engines in-house.

I like it, suits the aggressive design of the car.

It’s not very high priority, but I’d be quite interested in a behind the scenes, journal-like article. Maybe cover some things that don’t make it into the well reported times/breakdowns/technical news. A collection of views on the coming season from other journos/paddock hangers-on would be interesting too, if they’re willing to give them!

It would be cool to get some interviews with 3rd/junior drivers that are there too, see what they’re doing at the test and get their thoughts on their own coming seasons.

The Daily Mail does occasionally have some decent essays between the horn blowing on the front and highly generic rear of the paper. However, their F1 reporter is a complete ass and if I never had to read anything by him again I’d be perfectly content.

I wouldn’t say they were faster by the end of the season, but they’d certainly closed the gap significantly. The advantage obviously varied based on the circuit characteristics.

2009 was dominated by aero though. The double diffuser was the big talking point which gave Brawn the advantage over Red Bull in the early races (Williams and Toyota had it too, but were useless as usual). Red Bull had a few tricks up their own sleeves too, which laid the course for the next four years…

Logitechs are generally pretty reliable, yeah. I’m still using my old G25 (getting on for 10 years old now). The sensor on the sequential went a few years ago and the steering feels a bit loose but it’s still going.

From the newer generation Thrustmaster seem to have pulled ahead design-wise, although Logitech pedals are probably still superior to the basic Thrustmaster ones. I can’t speak for the reliability, but I haven’t heard as much bad about them as @xtwl , although it might have been drowned out by all the complaints about Fanatec :P.

If it’s your first wheel I think you’d be happy with either. If you could get the Thrustmaster with the upgraded pedals I would say that’s the best current budget option for competitive play.

Yeah Karun is getting better and better, his pitlane reporting in practice was great.

I’ll miss the V8, but I understand they had to make a change for the sake of competitiveness. At least there are still a range of engines in the WEC (some of the GT’s sound absolutely ace). Can’t really speak much for the look of it, seems to be wearing dazzle camouflage.
