    @David-A

    Although Webber has been there since 2007, why does no-one take note of the even more experienced Coulthard, who worked with the team since 2005?

    I’m not quite sure how does DC figure in this discussion since we’re not judging the drivers by how far back in time they had started with the team. or who was there from its infancy.

    Up to and including Britain 2012, there was 9 races. Taking the rain-hit Malaysia equation, Vettel was faster than Webber in the races 5 to 3 times – hardly a walloping you seem to insinuate.

    Agreed that 2011 was a horrible year for Webber even taking into account the car didn’t suit him.
    I don’t think he went to sleep in the 2nd half of 2010 like you said though. While his last win at Hungary that year was in August, he was still scoring podium finishes and serious points thereafter although his championship was slowly being chipped away. He choked at Korea and Abu Dhabi to be fair though. A Korean podium was easily attainable and would have won him the title but for his mistake on a wet track.

    @Jake

    I think it’s more that he appreciates that without Webber, Red Bull probably wouldn’t be the team they are today, and therefore, he has a lot of respect for him and wants to reward him with the option of continuing on in the team.

    That sounds plausible. People also sometimes forgot that Webber has been there since 2007. Quite a number of the mechanics and staff have been working together with Webber for the last 5 years. I would think they, and the newer staff as well, appreciate someone who has no airs like Webber around; we haven’t heard stories of staff having any problems with him. Apart from Helmut Marko of course who just sits back, does nothing much of note compared to the hard-working mechanics, engineers etc and shoots off his mouth whenever Golden Boy is being outshone by Webber.

    It is also very peculiar how as soon as Webber signed a 2013 contract extension after being courted by Ferrari (prompting Red Bull to offer him a 2013 deal in haste), he started to have “issues” with his car and became so uncompetitive compared to Vettel. Before that, he had delivered 2 fine wins and scored more points compared to Golden Boy.

    Sorry it is my mistake. I meant Helmut Marko actually. Edited my post accordingly.
    Some of Helmut Marko’s comments against Webber are really embarrassing. Turkey 2010 the nadir.

    @raymondu999

    Dietrich is a known Webber fanboy? Wow, i really didnt know that.

    He is hardly seen at races at all for an owner of 2 F1 teams and does not attract much publicity so the fact that he is a Webber fan if true is understandably not that well-known.

    They would never extend the circuit to North Bridge Road. As it is, it is already congested on its own before the F1 diversions and there is no way the city officials will close off that road.

    Apart from the expressway, its the ONLY relatively direct road left in the city after the F1 diversions that can channel traffic from the financial office areas in Shenton Way and Chinatown to the other side of town near Raffles Hotel on the east side and beyond.

    If you truncate that part and keep it only to the parallel St Andrew’s Road and Beach Road though, it looks quite a promising idea indeed. Very creative the parts between pit straight and Point 2. It goes past some of the traditional shophouses in fact and of course the grand old dame Raffles Hotel on Beach Road.

    Point 2 – same thing they would never extend to North Bridge Road. Connaught Drive towards Anderson Bridge would be possible only if the cars are already racing in 2 single files before it even reaches Connaught Drive. A Mickey Mouse chicane would have to be installed way before that to achieve the filtering.

    Left acute turn after Point 2 is not possible in reality…. that road you see is actually a flyover that goes over Nicoll Highway so there is no way even for now that traffic can turn in there from Nicoll Highway to reach Beach Road. (flyover is actually an exit road from the expressway that runs over the circuit). Would have to be done at the earlier Middle Road junction.

    it is definitely not as you pointed out but if the authorities want to extend the track to the MBS area (and keep the Crashgate stand while ditching the portion between the Cricket Club and Anderson Bridge portion), this is really just about the shortest route i can find.

    In fact, it is longer than the current circuit by a good 830m but a lap time around the revised circuit could arguably be faster than the current one.

    There are 4 fewer turns in total along with 2 very long straights and 1 medium-length straight where the cars can hit top speed for a longer duration.

    Strange thing is, i actually rooted heavily for Vettel in his early days and his Monza 08 win with Toro Rosso was a truly magical moment and a fresh breath of wind to people bored of seeing the usual suspects win all the time.

    I was eager to see him do well and his 2009 performance and also amiable general behavior in particular endeared him to alot of people and me as well who see him as a likeable young gun eager to do well in the sport he loves.

    But events in the 2010 season started to portray him in a different light and after that i was genuinely turned off by him and never really liked him since.

    I respect Vettel but i don’t really like him too much.
    He sounds a bit plastic to me to be honest; a bit too fake. I don’t get that feeling even with Schumacher before.

    People also dislike him being a bit of Mummy’s boy (well, Helmut Marko actually).
    Help it or not, some fans are suspicious of Helmut’s influence behind the scenes and the kind of treatment dished out to Webber at Turkey 2010 illustrates especially why; when the fault was immediately pinned on Webber whereas Helmut was pandering to Golden Boy Vettel and ensuring he did not have scratch or had his feelings hurt boo hoo.

    There is also doubt whether Webber does receives equal equipment throughout a season. Silverstone 2010 saga was one where the team was eager to switch the front wing from Webber’s car to Vettel (i didn’t buy the story of them doing it because Vettel was leading Webber in the table). Lest anyone say this is nonsense, i would ask how many times have Webber’s car suffered from KERs/gearbox issues this year compared to Vettel? Not saying that the mechanics deliberately sends Webber out on track on 3 wheels and with no steering wheel but they definitely are that bit more careful with Vettel’s car than Webber’s. Such perceptions of unfair treatment meted to his team-mate doesn’t help Vettel’s cause as well; people don’t really like seeing him attain what is perceived to be easy success because the competition has already been tweaked in his favour at his team-mate’s expense.

    Throwing a strop at his team whenever Webber has the upper hand or when things aren’t going his way doesn’t help people’s perception of him as all-smiles when things are going well, all-petulance when things go awry.

    I won’t be surprised if the revised track turns out like this.

    It is a very radical tweak but does incorporate all the rumoured revisions that have been mooted over the weekend.

    No Singapore Sling for good and the track extends into the Marina Bay Sands Casino area. The Crashgate grandstand is kept for “economic reasons” but the direction is reversed and it could be worthwhile whether it improves the racing. The straight along the Esplanade Drive is a bit long and dangerous so a Mickey Mouse chicane could possibly be installed at the junction near the Anderson Bridge to slow the cars down.

    Nice idea but i think they would still keep Turn 7 left-hander into Nicoll Highway as it is the spot where the most overtaking moves are executed.

    Connaught Drive is indeed 4 lanes wide but i think there is no way they can filter the cars into 2 files on that stretch in time for the Anderson Bridge 2-laner. They will have to stay on St Andrew’s Road for that to happen.

    The Crashgate grandstand section is indeed lame. But i doubt they would drop it to be honest. It guarantees 30,000 more seated spectators. A 3-day pass to that section costs USD185/£115 now in the early bird sales phase for next year’s tickets. So that’s USD5.5m/£3.45m in revenue; not a Mickey Mouse amount.

    Jenson is as complete a package as rivals like Alonso, Vettel or Raikkonen to make him the default lead driver

    Oh i think you misread my sentence.
    What i wrote was

    But perhaps what Martin should consider is whether Jenson is as complete a package as rivals like Alonso, Vettel or Raikkonen to make him the default lead driver.

    Jenson is a great driver and he will retire in future with a F1 career to be proud of. He is however close but maybe just not close enough to be part of the stratosphere that the likes of Alonso reside in. If you put Button in the F2012, he won’t disgrace the car and he would definitely outpace Massa but he probably won’t wring as much out of the car as Alonso – which is what the super-elite drivers will do.

    Put it this way, if a poll were to be done now on which current drivers would squeeze in into a revised list of all-time top 20 F1 drivers, Jenson’s name probably won’t figure in the discussion as prominently as super-elite drivers like Alonso, Vettel, Raikkonen and of coz, MSC.

    It is degrading to call Button McLaren no 2 material but neither is he outright McLaren no 1 material. He is probably erm, a McLaren no 1.5 material if there is such a term.

    I hope that Whitmarsh would go for someone like Raikkonen if Hamilton leaves – who all things equal, would be that vital bit faster than Button; and drop the idea of getting someone like di Resta or Perez to Button in as a clear understudy for 2013.

    They both get equal equipment and equal chances in the race, at least as far as both are mathematically capable of winning the championship.

    And that’s what matters, not some vague rambling about Whitmarsh not being “affectionate” enough.

    I don’t think i said anything about the McLaren drivers NOT getting equal equipment.

    All i said was there appears to be an issue between Martin and Lewis and whoever is wrong or right, a split appears inevitable judging by the kind of body language they display towards each other. Whereas there seems to be no problem between Martin and Jenson and it does show in public.

    End of day, they are humans as well and it is the same for us as it is for them out there in the working world. We might work as hard as a fellow colleague but if only 1 man can be promoted, the boss might feel he gets on better with you and the promotion opportunity passes your equally talented team-mate by. It is maybe not fair but no-one can say the boss is wrong to choose that way.

    If Martin feels he can gel better with Jenson and prefers to retain him over Lewis, he is well justified to do that as these people are not androids and interpersonal relations do play a significant role behind the scenes. But perhaps what Martin should consider is whether Jenson is as complete a package as rivals like Alonso, Vettel or Raikkonen to make him the default lead driver. I would be happy if Martin can sign Raikkonen and let the 2 drivers duel it out fair and square on equal equipment rather than sign someone to be an understudy to Button.
