That’s the thing – he wont win it on outright speed, it would have to be something crazy like this year’s Indy 500.

So just by starting there’s a chance, but very slim.

In NASCAR (and other US racing series), the number belongs to the team, not the driver. Drivers only get known for their number when they’ve stuck with the same team for a long period of time.

At least among the top 15-20 drivers in NASCAR, there is very little movement of drivers between teams, so many drivers are known for their number. However if for some reason Jimmie Johnson were to leave his current team he couldn’t take 48 with him (without his new team buying the number from the current owner)
