@andae, it’s happened every year as far as I can recall. It’s definitely gotten worse over the past 10 years. It is a “seasonal” thing. Hapens around this time of the year. Usually, the worst of it lasts for 2-3 days, but generally it remains hazy for around 2 weeks to a month. [Edit: At the moment, I do not consider the current situation to be the worst…expect it to deteriorate a but more, but not sure when]
It’s all the Indonesians at fault here, and us Malaysians and Singaporeans get caught in the crossfire.
It’s past midnight here, and the government has just ordered schools in 5 states to shut down in the morning till further notice. So yeah, it’s just about getting worse now. Singapore doesn’t have it as bad as KL for now.
I guess it’s a very real concern now, especially visibility since the race is at night. Bernie must be on the phone with the Singapore meteorlogical department urging them to cloud seed to clear the skies a bit.

I would like to express a different PoV, if that is even allowed here. I really completely struggle to see how running either of the polls would have been inappropriate, and more than that, show disrespect to Jules and the condition he is in.
Maybe this is a Western/British value, I don’t know. But I find this concept hard to grasp. Things should continue going on as per normal.

Yes, it is terrible. A heads-on collision with something that must weigh a few tons. I can only imagine the shock from the impact the driver of the truck must’ve had as well.

Is this a new policy? I’m pretty sure Massa was knocked out in Hungary 09 and he was in a life-threatening situation, but if I recall correctly, replays were indeed shown.
I’d say I kinda enjoyed the race. It was intriguing, for sure. At least the first half of it. The second half was a lot more monotonous….until the final corner of the final lap. Initially I thought it was Heidfield being over-ambitious, but seeing the replays I agree…nothing less than a one race ban will do for Nico Prost.
The one thing good is that cars can follow each other closely. So that shouldn’t be an issue, unlike F1. But I reckon two reasons we did not get a better spectacle on the overall (in terms of overtaking) – the track layout itself, and also the lower acceleration and top speed compared to other single seaters. Do you reckon next year perhaps, we’d see greater acceleration and top speed as they loosen the regs?
And regarding fanboost…when was it used? Did anyone use it? Why was it not talked about in the race? (I am happy though that the fan boost did not alter the outcome of the race)
One thing I do not understand is, how did Heidfield jump 3 cars in the pits, given that they all have to adhere to a minimum time anyways? I found it to be odd, and I thought he would be eventually penalized.
Since this year is mostly a “shakedown”, hopefully next year we see faster cars, and also slightly longer races. They should aim for 1 hr 15 mins.
Round 2 is in Putrajaya. I am planning to go, but unless I get the expensive grandstand tickets, I am not sure there would be any point in going. Plus I thought the TV cameras etc were good, except maybe the graphics HUD was a bit too small.
Nick, obviously I dislike the way our government treats non-Muslims. Me being a non, I could even go as far as saying that Malaysia does practice Aparthied-like policies to some extent. My great grandparents came to Malaysia, yet today an Indonesian or Fillipino Muslims can come over and get a “bumiputera” status, which brings with itself privileges and whatnot.
I’m not sure about concerts. There are always Muslim groups against them, but I think they only ever banned one or two concerts. Most celebs come here just fine. That doesn’t mean it is OK banning, just that it doesn’t matter to me since I don’t go for concerts anyways.
And regarding a lack of free mainstream media, the Internet negates it anyways. There are loads of online news sites in Malaysia, and I follow those as well as Western media. Still, this is arguably the only reason why the current government is in power as they get to “control” the rural poor.
Having said all of that, I would disagree the notion of F1 saying, “We are not going to go to Malaysia due to the lack of free press, or unfairness to non-Muslims”. That won’t help anything. Neither do I want America to come in and “set us free”. The struggle must be internal. Only then can true freedom be achieved.
PS: Yes, a lot of my previous argument hinged on “but other countries do the same”. Because a lot of Westerners are oblivious to the fact that much of the world is in flames due to the American foreign policy. I am not saying what Russia is doing is correct, but I won’t say what it is doing is wrong either. It is acting in its best interests, just like how America acts in its best interests in the endless meddling of the Middle East.
Let me say first of all that I am a Malaysian and I am able to seek free information without any particular bias on the Internet.
I find the idea of cancelling the Russian F1 GP to be utterly ridiculous. And same with the huge uproar Westerners seem to make of what Russia is doing in Ukraine, and the Russian policy on LGBTs.
First of all, Russia doesn’t even meddle as much in foreign countries as what the US and its Western allies does. Just in the past 15 years, we have had US meddling militarily in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria. All these countries were relatively peaceful and prosperous (except for Afghanistan). And it has got proxy governments serving its needs all over the world.
Russia is merely trying to counter the US which is coming right at its doorstep. Imagine Putin trying to install a puppet in Mexico or Canada? And more than that, there is credible evidence that the people of Eastern Ukraine do indeed choose Russia over the West.
I don’t get the “Russians are brainwashed” thing that Westerners seem to be spreading. I have a few close relatives and friends who are currently studying medicine in Russia, and everytime I ask them, they say there is none of that. Mainstream media is government controlled, so naturally there is bias there (just like in Malaysia). But the Internet is free….no websites are blocked and Russians have all the means to go online.
Putin’s ratings are at an all time high. The people are with him, whether you want to believe it or not, whether you think it is due to brainwashing or not. To me, this is similar to how the West painted Hitler in the 30’s. Like it or not, Hitler served the people, and the Germans in the mid-30s lived one of the best lives in Europe at the time. The Germans supported him.
And with regards to LGBT rights, Russia is disallowing mass propaganda. If you want to be an LGBT, fine enough so long as you don’t go around the entire Russia shouting “I am gay” and encouraging others to follow in your path.
The truth is, the “free mass media” in the West is not much better than “state owned media” in countries like Russia and Malaysia. The former are just better at disguising their aims.
With the Internet, I am shocked that there exists so much hypocrisy amongst F1 fans that you think we should not go to Russia. For God’s sake, the US has done so much worse, but no, the Russians are evil.
PS: I neither support Russia nor US, or even China. But I thought I’d say my 2 cents on this.

Where does Proton stand amid all this? Lotus Group is wholly owned by Proton, and I am curious as to why Proton isn’t more aggressively backing the team.
I think KevMag will beat JB hands down. JB’s an old dog who doesn’t deserve his spot in F1.
Anyway, I predict 2 wins, 7 podiums, 3 poles. Him to beat Button by at least 43 points. 4th in championship. Many podiums lost due to car failures/errors.
