Well, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and I’m thoroughly expecting to get hammered in response, but such is life. I think the most overrated drivers in F1 ATM are Jensen Button (only won title due to the brilliance of Ross Brawn and has no overtaking skills whatsoever!), Fernando Alonso (don’t doubt he’s a good driver but they all are at this level and his attitude stinks. He’s so self-obsessed it’s just unreal!) Sebastian Vettel cause I think he’s a good driver but the distinct advantage Red Bull have over the rest of the field ATM means it’s Jensen’s title winning senario all over again! If you put him in a completely even field of cars vs the likes of Hamilton, Kubica, Rosberg even Massa and Schumacher he’d be average at best. It’s very difficult to judge drivers ability when they’re in such unevenly matched cars! In contrast, I’d like to say the all time greats for me are the out-and-out racers such as Schumacher, Hakkinen, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Senna, Graham Hill, Fangio, Mansell etc. They concentrate on the corner/straight, the lap, then the race and finally the championship! Not that they’re not hungry for championship glory but they’re all about the thrill and challenge of the moment which, for me, is what racing is all about! My analogy would be footballers who genuinely play for the love of the sport and the abundant prima-donna’s who can’t be bothered to play with passion and gusto, but who are happy to rape the industry for that monstrous pay-check, such as Michale Owen (I hate football by the way but it fits my point well). Don’t get me wrong, all F1 drivers are extremely well paid, but the true racers still approach every race like it’s their first in competition whereas the rest just make up the numbers.
