Going to the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai 2 months, 3 weeks ago Hey everyone, hoping to make a 2 night stopover in Shanghai on my way to Southeast Asia, and I will plan to make it for race day only. Anyone know of cheap (but not too sketchy) hotels near the airport or near the circuit and any info about transportation to and from the circuit? I’ve never been to Shanghai (or anywhere in China) so I don’t know much about the area. Can’t wait!
Hey Kate,
Shanghai is pretty easy to get around even without speaking the language, almost everything on public transport is written in English & Mandarin.
If you want a cheap hotel, good cheap chain brands I used to stay in when I was on a budget was Jin Jiang Inn or Home Inn, they are all over the place. English may be a problem in these hotels though, generally they don’t speak much of it. I would recommend downloading an offline English to Chinese translator to your smartphone if you have one… remember to use simple English in it though, English to Mandarin doesn’t translate too well. haha
I wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere near the circuit or airport really, although I haven’t stayed there. I would get a hotel down near either close to ”The Bund” or near ”Peoples Square” 2 of my favourite spots in Shanghai… especially The Bund, a visit to Shanghai isn’t complete without a night visit to The Bund. I believe you can catch a train out to the circuit, so transport won’t be an issue. Also if you get stuck there are always Taxi’s which are cheap as in China.
Also, I would get another app (free) for Shanghai, called ”Shanghai Taxi” has a huge list of locations to choose from, you just choose where you want to go, then it brings a flash card up on your phone to show the driver, another good one is ”Taxi Book”.
I’ll be staying down near the bund, and at the track all 3 days. Drop me an email if you want to catch up, need further advise or places to eat/drink… Happy to help, quite familiar with Shanghai.
Cheers,
Shylo
