Haven’t read through all the replies here, so I’m not sure if this has been said, but a to me a major problem with overly patriotic fans (of any sport) is that they can’t seem to accept other reasons for supporting a driver/team/etc. The results of this can range from slightly annoying (“you’re German so you must be a Schumacher fan!”) to downright nasty (visibly supporting the main rival of a German driver at a German race is NOT a fun experience).

Nationality is as good or bad a reason as any other (talent, character, team affiliation etc.) to support a certain driver, but it really can turn sour when patriotic fans use it to assume that everyone should conform to their way of picking a favorite, or to “prove” that their chosen driver is perfect and can do nothing wrong.
