I voted for Vettel – what else does he have to do to win DOTW??? I think Webber’s weekend in the other Red Bull underscores just how good Vettel was this weekend.

“Somehow it felt that Vettel’s win was made all the more easier by Webber.”
I totally agree. Webber clearly drove with the purpose of maximising the WDC result for his teammate, and the WCC result for his team. […] -

Hmmm … “it was a performance that will be appreciated more as time passes by and more realise how incredible it was.” I take your point, but I felt similarly back in 1986 (!) when my then-hero, Alain Prost, made […]

You cannot go past the man who only missed out on pole because he got checked by Massa on his last lap in Q3, then jumped his teammate at the start despite being on the dirty side of the track, then led every […]

7/10. Hamilton’s dominance at the front was nicely balanced by Perez’s 2nd-half charge to almost threaten him. There were some thrilling enough duels all the way down the field, too.

Button was unchallenged across the whole (shortened) weekend, so definitely first. It’s hard to say how they panned out below them, given so many top drivers had no race to speak of, but of those that did, I’d […]

Grosjean’s sideswipe into Hamilton was obviously wrong and deserved a penalty, as any look at the vision from Hamilton’s cockpit will show. However, two the two issues are:
1) Why a ban for Grosjean, but not […] -

mda commented on the post, How many points have drivers lost in 2012? 9 months ago
To be fair, only incidents which are without any shadow of a doubt out of a driver’s control should be considered in “calculating” (if you can use such a word of such a hypothetical exercise) how many points […]

mda commented on the post, 20 years ago today: Mansell finally wins the title 9 months ago
Not an argument either way, really. Though, as an avid watcher of F1 since 1985, I think assigning the 86 & 87 titles to Mansell, instead of to Prost & Piquet, would have been a more accurate reflection of what […]

Not quite. It’s using the Oplympics method of ranking nations on the medal tally. Order is by number of golds, but drivers with the same number of golds are then ranked by number of silvers, and so on. For […]

Not quite. It’s based on the Olypmics system of ranking nations on the overall medal tally. Rank is by number of golds, with tiebreaks among drivers with the same number determined by number of silvers, then if […]

If Bernie Ecclestone’s Olympic-style “medal tally” had determined the WDC since, say, 1980, these would have been the results:
1980: Alan Jones
1981: Alain Prost
1982: Didier Pironi
1983: Alain Prost
1984: […] -

If Bernie Ecclestone’s dream of gold-silver-bronze for F1 race results were in place these last 30 years or so, Mansell would have been a three-time WDC: 1986, 1987 & 1992.
