You no longer ‘visit the bathroom’ but make a quick pitstop

Hey Guys ! Have not been on this site too much lately (few other things going on) but am going to the GP. Trying out Moss stand this year, mostly owing to how late I left it to get tickets but it looks like a good location to watch from. I’ll make the meet up, I’ll be easy to spot as I’ll be in my trademark pink cap & will probably be the only 13 weeks pregnant fan there ! How exciting, baby’s first GP!

I am going next year & am really looking forward to it. We have tickets at L’Epingle (the hairpin), but I’d appreciate any tips on other good viewing spots, track & Montreal info in general.

We went in 2008 & had seats in the Bay grandstand, which as it turned out was the most notorious place to sit as Crashgate happened right in front of us ! In terms of action, well you only get to see the cars come out of turn 17 & then go under the grandstand as they take turn 18, but you will have a lovely view of the Marina Bay now that its all finished. And there is a giant screen there for all the action you miss. But I really liked the novelty of the cars running under the stand, even if the action in front of you wasn’t the greatest. But I did note that tickets for this stand were far more reasonably priced than some of the others, and we considered the money well spent.

I went GA in 2006 & although I had the birds eye view of Rascasse-gate, if I ever went to Monaco again I’d mortgage the house & buy a grandstand seat. The GA area is very small, and its up the side of the hill. So unless you are a mountain goat, it is not easy to access or get comfortable in for a whole day. There are also thousands of people crammed into the tiny space, so forget about leaving your hard earned spot & going for a wander. While there is a giant screen there, there are also a lot of trees & foiliage blocking the view of it, and you can literally only see about 50 metres of track in front of you. Whilst the atmosphere was great – it was Monaco after all – I’d far rather have a seat & a smaller bank balance than cling to a mountain in the dirt & trees. Did I mention the hill is all dirt? It’d be absolutely awful if it rained. Some friends went a year or two after me & took my advice to get a seat (lucky, because it rained the whole day) and sat in K stand with a view out over the bay & the view of the cars as they headed towards La Piscine. They loved it & said they would sit there again.

Tram, tram & tram ! There is limited parking at Albert Park & many of the roads are closed due to the event so traffic is chaos anyway. If you are a grandstand ticket holder, your tram ride from the CBD is free (although trust me, they never check anyway, so even if you are a GA ticket holder you might as well just jump on). Trams take between 5-15 minutes to get from the CBD to the track, depending on what gate you want. They put on heaps of extra services so you won’t have to wait too long.

http://www.foxtix.com.au appears to be the official ticket seller this season, as you are directed there from the grandprix.com.au website. For international visitors, I have in the past used easygpt.com, whom I found very good.

So far I have sat in 5 grandstands, as well as viewed the race from varying spots around the track. Personally, my favourites are the Senna stand at turn 16, and the Jones stand at turn 1. However, you can view both vantage points on a GA ticket these days & just BYO seat. Turn 16 is awesome because you can see the cars come around that last corner & gun it as they head down the straight. And turn 1 just can’t be beaten for the start of the race. If you are a keen photographer, then Brabham (turn 2) is the best spot for head on shots of the cars. If you want seating, then I’d recommend a 4 corners pass, which gives you a seat in 4 different grandstands over the 4 days. That way you can weigh up the pros & cons of each (its also a little cheaper than buying a 4 day Jones pass for example).

Watching this accident was just spine chilling. I hope never to see a sight like it again. As much as I love my motorsport, I don’t ever want to tune in to watch people dying on track in front of me. As soon as I saw his helmet fly off, I knew the news wouldn’t be good. Such a sad waste of a truly talented rider who had all the potential to be a great champion. RIP Marco, we will miss you and your crazy sideshow-bob-hair.
