Hi F1 Fanatics, my dad is going to Monaco for first time in May 13. It’s a big birthday treat – I want to get him some extra kit, was planning to get FanVision but heard it’s not happening this year for F1 – can you recommend some good bits and pieces to get him to add to his enjoyment: was thinking binoculars (anyone recommend good brand?), decent ear defenders (again what’s good and affordable as a one-off and can take an earpiece inside) and maybe a portable radio for commentary (any good ones?) – HELP! Thanks in advance, Vicki
Hi Vicki
You could give him a few things to make the grandstand experience more comfortable…sunglasses, rain poncho just in case, seat cushion, squishy ear plugs to put under his ear defenders if he is particularly sensitive to the noise (some folks are, some aren’t, I rarely wear ear defenders or plugs at a race – generally only in if right next to one of the cars in a garage or on the pit lane for example but lots of folks need them even at a fair distance so best to err on the side of caution). Don’t worry too much about the make, any half decent set of ear defenders should be ok. If you’re still unsure let me know and I’ll find out the brand of the ones we use. Sorry, I can’t help with binos (i have a few littles sets for kids to use from our balconies but they were not expensive and seem to do the job ok for them) or a radio (I don’t know which stations if any have an English commentary). Your right, FanVision and F1 management (FOM) failed to reach agreement on terms this year so no FanVision, rumours of an alternative from FOM themselves or another supplier but just that for now…rumour.

I hope that’s of some help.
