    @GreenSpyder it was the same FOM camera team that covers every race. Although they may have directed more coverage Hamilton’s way for his home race, it wasn’t irrelevant, as he spent much of the race fighting for the eventual win.

    What happened to the Target car in the pitstop? The highlights video didn’t think to give any commentary on the footage for that.

    Forix’s motor racing history page, 8W did an article on Dominators. They drew up a longlist based on cars since 1980 that had won 50% of races contested in a season, and scored more than 50% of the points available to them, and then narrowed it down from there. Eventually it came down to a straight fight between the F2002 and the MP4/4, which edged it as the most dominant car of all time partly due to its much better qualifying performance. It’s quite a good read – there have been a remarkable number of ‘dominant’ cars since 1980.

    A 1982 Ferrari 126C2. A Ferrari that was finally worthy of Gilles Villeneuve’s talents but which violently denied both its drivers the championship, taking the constructors crown alone.

    For me, this car is the best example of the insanity that is Formula 1. 580 Horsepower, ground effect, no suspension to speak of and not much in the way of crash protection either. Of course my talents would be utterly unworthy, but it does have the mystique of a more heroic age about it.

    Going back a little bit, Prost would be another candidate. His performances in 1990 were I feel better than in his championship years and he was denied the championship at the last. He also had some strong performances in 1982/3, which could easily have merited a championship had he had the reliability.

    It didn’t happen with football, because there was never full live FTA coverage of the premiership (or Champions League for that matter). In the case of football, Sky is providing a useful service as there’s simply no way that the sheer volume of matches could all be shown on BBC and ITV within the public service mandate.

    F1 on the other hand has always been Free to Air and should remain thus, it’s got a great audience in a hard to fill timeslot and even at this reduced price, you end up paying too much for the limited number of races. £175 is still more than my entire license fee.

    They had a rather excellent GT1 Race there last month. It looked fantastic, especially the elevation changes, the run downhill into the last corner in particular. You can watch the race free online at http://www.gt1world.com/gt1tv, with commentary from David Croft and John Watson.

    I think that there’s no reason why it shouldn’t have a race, as it doesn’t really make sense to have two Iberian races both in Spain, when there’s fans and a great track in Portugal, but even if it were to work out financially from Bernie’s point of view, it would be a long time before the event were to materialise, because of the enduring contracts for Barcelona and Valencia.

    Really, I’d like to see both of the Spanish races replaced, moving one to Portimao and another to either Motorland Aragon (watch highlights of the Motogp there to see why) or Navarra (although that track is as yet unproven and looks a bit too similar to Portimao) anything would be an improvement on the current venues.

    I was always a big Schumacher fan, from when I started watching F1. I think my first F1 memory is him driving into the side of Villeneuve, which probably means I started following him because he was the only driver I recognised, but he impressed me greatly in his battles with Hakkinen in 1998 (Probably still my favourite ever season) particularly because the Ferrari wasn’t as quick as the Mclaren.

    After Schumacher retired for the first time, I switched my allegiance to Hamilton and Mclaren, who are probably now my favourite team. Button definitely seems to be the more personable of the two drivers as he seems to have some sort of personality and seems to be that bit more laid back than Hamilton.

    That said, I’d quite like Webber to win the Championship this year. He’s funnier and less of a stooge than most of the other drivers, and anything that irritates the Red Bull management has got to be good. Listening to Jackie Stewart talk about how hard it was for him, coming back after his broken leg, also impressed me.
