For both Ocon and Vandoorne I apply the same rule; They’re outperforming my expectations as a rookie in a new formula they have never tested before. Perez is expected to beat Ocon by a mile, and he isn’t doing that, therefore Ocon is performing better than expected. Same for Vandoorne, he hasn’t had the best of runs sure, but’s he’s closer than expected to Alonso whom is still the ‘best’ driver on the grid.

For me one can easily be outqualified 2-9 but still perform better relative to their expected performances. For example Palmer could have a better race than Hulkenberg and still finish behind after starting behind. I simply expect less of him.

    17. Kvyat
    18. Vandoorne

    How?

I’d say this is my current top 10.

    1; Vettel
    2; Alonso
    3; Bottas
    4; Hamilton
    5; Ricciardo
    6; Verstappen
    7; Hulkenberg
    8; Sainz
    9; Ocon
    10; Perez

I’m afraid Spa is a bit more traditional than Silverstone even as there isn’t much to do but enjoying our belgian beer and hopefully a warm afternoon sun.

There’s usually some entertainment behind the stands at Eau Rouge but not to the likes of Silverstone (I’ve been to both on several occasions).

For a F1 event it’s also not advised to leave your spot if you have bronze as places are hard fought for.

A walk around the track is mandatory though, otherwise you haven’t fully experience our 7km track with its scenery and height difference. Bring walking shoes!

@Keithcollantine You say that as if you know Kubica is coming back.

I usually wait a couple of hours on track and the leave as one of the last and there’s still heaps of traffic. Last year was an absolute nightmare with Verstappen, this year with Vandoorne will be even worse.

I got bronze too, and I usually am near the track by 6, and leave as late as I can. With really only one route to Brussels and the rest of the country it’s always a pile up.

I think you’re underestimating the effort factories put in GT3 then, and the discussions every weekend happen about BoP, as you might have guessed it never happens everyone is happy with it.

But in GT3 racing I find it often enough balances out so no team is guaranteed to win or to be up front. That’s why for the most important races brands bring their factory driver line-up from all over the world to for example Daytona or the Nurburgring.

I think the key difference in why I think it works for these categories is because the BoP changes often enough, and the races are way shorter which decreases the effect on the performance, and it almost always involves AM drivers in GT racing. Not so much for touring cars.

Again though, I agree BoP is ‘wrong’ on some levels, like in the WTCC. Surely Citroën would win all but after all they did build the best car. I have always had immense respect for people who manage to dominate a sport, whether that’s one person hitting a golfball, just swimming, or 200 guys building and designing a car.

If you have to look for a B&B or hotel now you can put your money on it it’ll all be booked. The nice places at least. Try something closer to Brussels if you’re flying in, probably cheaper too.

Even then how do you compare two extreme tracks like Monza and for example Monaco. Unless that driver is going to test the cars on each circuit on the calendar it is never fair.

I really do dislike Ford for what they did last year, the respect I had for them really took a hit.

That being said, GTE (Pro) is, unlike GT3, a factory category and thus should be treated as such wherein teams can go banana’s to win within the regulations. Many GT racefans have been wanting a F1 of GTs, if you understand what I mean. On the other hand that would also mean brands like Nissan or Lexus, or Acura, Bentley would never compete as they could never beat the likes of Porsche or Ferrari, or Mercedes. They aren’t right now anyway, and don’t look like joining so I’m all up for just scrapping BoP.

In GT3 racing though I do feel BoP works, in several series like the ADAC GT, the Blancpain, WTSCC, etc. it does seem to create fairer fights over shorter races.

In case @keithcollantine is short of a new one I’d say it might be fun to guess what connects

    -2003
    -1955
    -1970.

    Hint: There’s only three years.

I thought I had it! They were all three the oldest winner of a GP event at their last win. But Farina went on to win others after the German GP in 1953.

It has to do something with age!

    They all three;

    1)Participated in the 1950 F1 world championship
    2)Did not finish/participate the 1950 Indy 500
3)They all three finished races with shared drives
4)They all scored podiums in 1952

Fun fact I learnt, Farina finished both 2nd and 3rd in a two cars as a shared driver and got 2 podiums added to his tally.

Hanks is the odd one out as he never participated in F1 apart from the Indy races, Taruffi then never raced at Indy. Which leads me to believe neither Indy or F1 is the link between the three.

    I give up.

Same for the official F1 site by the way. The very first time I went we had to collect on track and it’s an absolute waste of (track)time.

I should’ve never read it, can’t stand the fact I don’t even know what those three connect…, let alone know a fourth.

Maybe a hint is all we need @keithcollantine.

Last few years I was always able to print them yet now also had to pay for a fancy delivery… I don’t get that.

If it’s anything like Silverstone or Dubai they’re shipped well on time though.
