McLaren spent a lot of effort developing the MP4-18 in 2003 but despite repeated rumours of its imminent introduction they never raced the car. Instead the team completed the season with an evolution of its predecessor, the MP4-17D.
The MP4-18 was succeeded by the MP4-19, which was closely based on the design, and raced from the beginning of the 2004 season.
