Who looks good for ’09? Rank the teams

Which team has built the best car going into round one?

The last full group test ahead of the new season finished yesterday. Two weeks from today, the 2009 F1 cars will be driven in anger for the first time in practice for the Australian Grand Prix.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, how accurately can we predict the form of each of the teams at the first race?

I’ve ranked the teams in order of how quick I think each of their cars is. Share your ranking below, and we’ll put them all together to see how accurately F1 Fanatic readers can predict their 2009 form.

To get a little perspective on the teams’ performance, here’s how each driver’s best lap times combined in the four-day test session at Barcelona this week:

1 Rubens Barrichello Brawn GP BGP001 1’18.926 (221 laps)
2 Jenson Button Brawn GP BGP001 1’19.’127 (212)
3 Nico Rosberg Williams FW31 1’19.774 (209)
4 Timo Glock Toyota TF109 1’20.091 (260)
5 Felipe Massa Ferrari F60 1’20.168 (201)
6 Robert Kubica BMW F1.09 1’20.217 (248)
7 Kimi Raikkonen Ferrari F60 1’20.314 (136)
8 Nick Heidfeld BMW F1.09 1’20.338 (223)
9 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull RB5 1’20.576 (185)
10 Fernando Alonso Renault R29 1’20.664 (272)
11 Lewis Hamilton McLaren MP4-24 1’20.869 (156)
12 Kazuki Nakajima Williams FW31 1’20.907 (177)
13 Jarno Trulli Toyota TF109 1’20.937 (242)
14 Sebastien Buemi Toro Rosso STR4 1’21.013 (213)
15 Giancarlo Fisichella Force India VJM02 1’21.045 (238)
16 Mark Webber Red Bull RB5 1’21.347 (183)
17 Sebastien Bourdais Toro Rosso STR4 1’21.629 (127)
18 Nelson Piquet Jnr Renault R29 1’21.662 (126)
19 Adrian Sutil Force India VJM02 1’21.834 (211)
20 Heikki Kovalainen McLaren MP4-24 1’21.991 (178)

Based partly on that, the other test sessions, and my own gut feeling, here’s my ranking of the teams are heading into the first race of 2009:

1. BMW – Their decision to sacrifice their 2008 championship effort to develop a more competitive 2009 car appears to have been vindicated. The car looked quick early on and they seem not to have felt the need to push for headline-setting fastest lap times.

2. Ferrari – KERS teething problems have grabbed a few headlines for Ferrari in the off-season but their underlying pace is, as ever, very strong.

3. Brawn GP – Clearly invested an enormous amount of effort in their 2009 challenger when they were Honda, and perhaps their off-season disruption hasn’t hampered development of the RA109/BGP001 too much. Probably not as sensationally fast as the time indicate, but still remarkable under the circumstances.

4. Toyota – One of the first cars to be revealed, the TF109 has never been far from the pace in testing. Jarno Trulli has emphatically endorsed his new steed.

5. Red Bull – Clearly one of the most radical cars on the grid, has shown decent but not world-beating pace in testing.

6. McLaren – All sorts of rumours are flying around about their pre-season form. Unless they’ve run an extremely unusual testing regime it looks to me like they’ve got something fundamentally wrong with their 2009 car. Martin Whitmarsh has now admitted the MP4-24’s performance isn’t good enough. At this stage sixth out of ten might even be too high a ranking.

7. Williams – The times above suggest that the gulf in performance between Rosberg and Nakajima will persist into 2009. Rosberg’s looked decent in testing but I think Williams face being out-stripped by their better-equipped rivlas in the development race.

8. Renault – Seems to lack the aerodynamic sophistication of the other Renault-powered car, but don’t underestimate the performance boost each team can get from their engines this year.

9. Toro Rosso – It’s entirely possible Toro Rosso could end up ahead of their sister team this year, but right now the RB5 looks quicker.

10. Force India – One of the last cars to appear and a new technical collaboration yet to gel. I don’t think Force India will see the success boos Vijay Mallya craves right away in 2009.

How competitive do you think each of the teams are? Share your ranking below and I’ll add them together to create an F1 Fanatic pre-2009 season form guide.

Please use the following format when posting to make it easier for me to incorporate them all together – fastest at the top, slowest at the bottom, using the following team names:

BMW
Ferrari
Brawn GP
Toyota
Red Bull
McLaren
Williams
Renault
Toro Rosso
Force India

Im not sure about williams and redbull but Ferrari, BMW, and Brawn GP sure look strong. However we have to take into account the reliability of Brawn GP.

  3. BMW
    Ferrari
    McLaren

    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Brawn GP
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso

    Brawn
    Mclaren
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Williams
    Force India

they are all pretty close anyway. Maybe some are partly equal, like Toro Rosso and Williams. But i guess Toro Rosso will get the best of the car because of its development than Williams…

I do think the Red Bull teams (both) will get faster and faster as the season goes by because they have 4 cars lapping the tracks at the same time, not just 2.

  5. Here is what I think form is now going in to Oz- not what I think the final standing will be. Mclaren will get themselves sorted.

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Brawn
    Redbull
    Mclaren
    Williams
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  7. I really don’t know what to predict. Lets give it a try.

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Mclaren
    Red bull
    williams

thats Australia and well see for the rest off the season

  8. I see a lot of you really underestimate McLaren.

    1. I agree. They may just be holding their cards close to their “chest”. It is worrying though you have to admit. They are leaving it late!!!

  9. Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Renault
    McLaren
    Williams
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

  10. 1. ferrari
    2. renault
    3. mclaren

  11. according to autosport, Mclaren have admitted they are lacking in pace, and the car is not progressing at the pace they estimated it would!!! So no sandbagging! real problem. However i have faith they will be up to scratch by Melbourne, although maybe not as quick as last year. Cant wait!

  12. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

    1. Thats how i think they will go into Australia – but i think it will be a much different story come the end of the year – Mclaren will be much higher for sure

  13. Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    BMW
    Toyota
    Williams
    Red Bull
    Renault
    McLaren
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

honestly, kovi is in a car/team above his talent level. he’s going to be (was last year) the reason mclaren don’t win a constructors championship.

    1. totally agree. We have seen hamiltons talents, but Kovi isnt stepping up to the mark! They need a Kubica, or Rosberg to take that second seat and actually challenge Hamilton for the point otherwise Mclaren are going to miss out

    2. Actually Kovi has a great talent (slightly less than Hamilton), but it’s resticted ’cause he is the NUMBER 2 DRIVER in McLaren, and his job is more or less the same as Baricchelo’s job was when he was Schumi’s teammate in Ferrari from 2000 to 2005.

You can except Kovi to give a full support to Hamilton’s asspirations for 2009, such as watching his back, and letting him pass for more points

This last year’s policy will become much more evident again this yaer, IF McM have a real chance at any of the titles…..

P.S. Do you think Hamilton would have won the Driver’s title last year, if they had given Kovi an equal car/set up/strategy ?!?! ;-)

  14. BMW
    Williams
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Ferrari
    Toro Rosso
    Red Bull
    McLaren

    Renault

  15. Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Williams
    Redbull
    Mclaren
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  16. McLaren* – some might laugh but I have faith
    Ferrari
Brawn GP – not sure if the speed is real?
    Williams
    BMW
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Toro Rosso
    Force India
    * Seems like McLaren is up against it, show us what you’ve got, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

  17. At the end of the season maybe things are different, but for Australia:
    Ferrari
    Brawn
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Williams
    Redbull
    Mclaren
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  18. Pace is one thing. Getting used to racing with a giant snowplough into turn 1 with 19 other snowploughs at Melbourne is another.
But then these are all professional racing drivers. :D

    I’ll go for:
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Toyota
    Williams
    Renault
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  19. Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW

Here’s my ranking for the oz gp:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Mclaren
    Torro Rosso
    Williams
    Force India

I think theres no doubt that brawn gp’s times were set on fresh tyres and very low fuel to get some attention and attract some sponsors, but they wouldnt be THAT fast if they had a car thats really struggling so they definitley will be scoring good points this year

mclaren – i couldnt make my mind up whether they were sandbagging or not but now that whitmarsh has said they are struggling its a pretty damning verdict. But theyv got the experience to get themselves out of it and by the end of they year id expect them to be back on the podium and if there’s a couple of wet gp’s i wouldnt be suprised if lewis won a race. The only positive out of this pretty crap situation is that all the hamilton haters will see how good lewis is this year, hes got a crap car but i know by the end of the year he will have silenced the doubters about his talent.

i hope im wrong in my ideal world hamilton would turn up in melbourne and be on pole with alonso next to him but i cant see that happening.

Keith maybe you could do a similar sort of artice to see who everyone thinks will be world champion this year.

    1. After all, he crashed his car in the last to test sessions too :) He is a very good driver, but not the ideal as people think.

  21. I think what most people are failing to see about the Brawn car is it’s consistency. Especially the last 2 days of testing when Rubens and Jenson ran their Race Simulations clocking late to 1.21’s and early 1.22’s even fuelled for many laps and then came down into the 1.19’s as they shed their fuel loads.

    My predictions:

    Ferrari
    McLaren
    Brawn GP
    BMW
    Renault
    Toyota
    RB
    Williams
    TR
    FI

  22. Looking at LONG RUN pace then for me it’s

Brawn GP – consistently high 1m20’s to low 1m21’s (see James Allens Blog)

Ferrari – Massa (did 36 lap stint, mainly in mid – low 1m21’s Metronomically Impressive & Huge Fuel Tank!!!)

BMW – Race distance mainly in 1m22’s but a good patch of mid 1m21’s

Havent seen enough data for the rest…Toyota et al.

  23. sorry

    Brawn
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota

  24. 1. BMW Sauber
    2. Brawn
    3. Toyota
    4. Ferrari
    5. McLaren
    6. Renault
    7. Red Bull
    8. Williams
    9. Toro Rosso
    10. Force India

Personally I’d love to see a championship fought between Toyota, BMW and Brawn. I despise McLaren, but I expect them to be back up top just to spite me.

  25. McLaren may be struggling – but so were BMW pre season last year and they came pretty close (whilst they were still developing their 08 car).

    Ferrari
    BMW
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Brawn
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Williams
    Force India

  26. I think is gonna be a really close field…I can see you underestimate Williams, however they made the second fastest time in barcelona-even though according to information they have yet to practice qualyfying laps- and they have some more testing time still to use in order to improve their car. I think Brawn Gp is in hot form , at least a good car for Jenson, and for McLaren they will find their way through the field, the basic idea behind the car is good, they struggle because of a bad aerodynamic update. All things considered:
    1.Red Bull
    2.Williams
    3.Brawn GP
    4.Ferrari
    5.McLaren
    6.BMW
    7.Toyota
    8.Renault
    9.Toro Rosso
    10.Force India

  27. OZ prediction
    Brawn
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Mclaren
    Toyota
    Redbull
    Williams
    Renault
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

I think midfield is going to be about the drivers, with the field very mixed up. It should make for a very interesting season.

I still have McLaren and Hamilton as my favourites for the season. When Ferrari are strong I can see Massa and Raikonen taking points from each other, costing each other dominance and the WDC.
We just have to wait and see now, I can’t wait for qualifying at Melbourne. It’s going to be electric.

  28. Ferrari

    Renault
    McLaren

  29. Less than 10 cars will finish in mel..get ready for a few pile ups. First race everyone wants to push like hell.

  30. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

This is my prediction for the first race not what I think the final championship standings will be, and for most of these rankings could easily be changed by a couple of places because I at the moment I think it is that tight that if a team has a few problems over the weekend they could be dropping a few places.

Also this is how I rank the cars themselves as I think drivers like Alonso will outperform their car.

Even after the first race I think it will be hard to judge each car’s relative performance due to any problems that may occur over the weekend and for teams like Renault where we could see Alonso flying and Piquet struggling it will be difficult to assess where to rank the car compared to the others.

  31. for Australia it like this:

    Brawn GP
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Renault(with Alonso)

    as season gets older:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    McLaren
    Toyota

  32. 1. Ferrari
    2. BMW
    3. Brawn GP
    4. Toyota
    5. McLaren
    6. Red Bull
    7. Renault
    8. Williams
    9. Toro Rosso
    10. Force India

  33. I think i’ll wait until after next weeks tests to see if the form book will alter at all before i add my list.

    1. I agree, I want to see how McLaren fair in next weeks tests. I expect to see some big improvements otherwise they’ll be upper midfield in Auz.

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

Before I’d have had Fer, BMW, BGP but the Felipe story on autosport.com changed that!

Renault and McLaren are the biggest unknowns for me at the moment, followed by the question of how quickly TR can access the potential of Newey’s car.

  39. Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Williams
    BMW
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  40. I don’t buy the McLaren pace… it is calling “hiding the game”. They may have some problems, sure, but, ALL the Teams did and still do, so, my bet is more or less the continuation of 2008 final races and some info from the last months:

    Order:

    McLaren
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Toro Rosso
    Toyota
    Williams
    Force India
    Brawn GP

Australia will tell us who’s closer to reality.
Meanwhile, pay attention to McLaren testing in Jerez, next week – they are alone, but still, we have the times from last week from all teams but Toro Rosso and Brawn GP to compare.

    I hope I’m right ! ;)

    1. Tey will not be alone…

    2. I just cannot get my head around McLaren being so far off the pace a team with all that resources, how could they get it so wrong. I would accept being maybe 0.5 seconds down but not 2.5 secs off the pace! I’m sure they can claw that back pretty quickly. What advantage is there in sandbagging to that extent?

  45. Here’s mine. I’ve seperated them into groups because its so close at the moment, but these are the ‘tiers’ I think will be doing battle with one another at the start of the season.

    1. Ferrari
    2. Brawn
    3. Toyota
    4. BMW Sauber
    ——
    5. McLaren
    6. Red Bull

    8. Renault
    9. Williams
    10. Force India

  46. Well, lets go!!!

    1 BMW
    2 Ferrari
    3 Renault
    4 Toyota
    5 McLaren
    6 Red Bull
    7 Williams
    8 Toro Rosso
    9 Force India

Brawn GP I don’t really know where I should rank the team along the seven first positions. Many things have been commented about. I honestly think is more a marketing operation (weight, engine rev limit, fuel…) than real performance, but who knows

McLaren is the other team for which I have serious doubts but I think they will return to the top soon.

  47. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn
    Williams
    Mclaren
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Toyota
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

  48. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  49. At the moment on pure speed would be like this

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Mclaren
    Toro Rosso
    Renault
    Force India

But for Oz it will be all mixed up… pretty close though

  50. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Renault
    McLaren
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I feel and hope that the first six are so close each other that you cannot say who’s going to win in Australia.

  51. At the moment,

    1.BrawnGP
    2.BMW
    3.Ferrari
    4.Toyota
    5.Williams
    6.Redbull
    7.McLaren
    8.Renault
    9.Torro Rosso
    10.Force India

I think McLaren will pick it up after 1st two races, and Renault will improve as well.

  52. Ferrari
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Redbull
    Toyota
    Renault
    Brawn
    Williams
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

BMW and Ferrari well out in front. After that it is going to be quite tight. Mclaren may struggle at the start but I expect them to improve over the season. Brawn is the most difficult to predict: their current times just feel too good to be true.

This is a tough ne this year, o think Mclaren will sort a lot of their issues out but wont catch up by the aussie GP, I think BMW has the best combination of speed, reliability and know how just ahead of Brawn GP, Ferrari look mediocre at the moment to me and the will he wont he turn up debate is still relevant to Raikanon. I think Seb Vetel is going to be key for Red Bull, and I don’t think toyota (despite trulli bigging it up) have anything special. Williams and renault will continue their struggles and force india may come a bit good through the season but I dont think they will be ready at melbourne.

    1. So much for the sandbagging theory! :)

  56. Ferrari
    BrawnGP
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
Red Bull/Torro Rosso I see them on the same level
    Williams
    Mclaren
    Force India

    1. BMW
      Ferrari
      BrawnGP
      Toyota
      renault
      Mclaren
      Red Bull
      Toro rosso
      Williams
      Force India

  57. Ferrari
    Mclaren
    BMW
    Toyota
    renault
    Brawn
    Red Bull
    Toro rosso
    Williams
    Force India

  58. Ferrari
    Red Bull
    BMW
    Brawn
    Renault
    Toyota
    Williams
    Mclaren
    Toro rosso
    Force India

Kimi vs Vettel…BMW doens’t have the drivers, Kub is quick but can’t pass…BMW will work for him tho & screw up Nick more.

  59. Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Toro Rosso
    Williams
    Renault
    Force India
    McLaren

  60. I have a really strong feeling McLaren are going to solve this problem in next weeks testing.

    So

    Brawn
    McLaren
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    BMW
    Renault
    Williams
    Red Bull
    Force India
    Torro Rosso

  61. Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    McLaren
    Toyota
    Willians
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  62. Iv’e allready posted my list but i did just remember one thing, Alonso is going to be kicking him self for not joining Honda when he was given the oportunity! I would be so gutted =/

  63. For Aus:
    Ferrari
    BrawnGP
    Renault
    BMW
    Toyota
    Mclaren
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

    End of season:
    Renault
    Ferrari
    BrawnGP
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Roso
    Force India.

I don’t know is a guess, is very tight I think the winner will be the team who has the best evolution, that’s the reason I’m putting Renault in the first position for what the did in the final part of the season but is my guess, I think the key will be the evolution.

  64. Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    BMW
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    Mclaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

Keith do a drives list as well because that would be interesting seeing the rather large gaps between alonso-piquet rosberg-kazuki etc

    1. The reason I didn’t do this is because it would be heavily influenced by their car’s performance. I will do something like this around the mid-point of the season though.

  65. It would be nice to see Brawn GP or Toyota pull off either championship. And I don’t think McLaren will be anywhere near competitive this year. Either way, in my opinion, the current top teams will be in for a bit of a shock!

  66. This is the result I think will confront us come end of the year.

    Ferrari
McLaren (They will solve pre-season problems within the first few GP’s of the year)
    Brawn GP
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Toro Rosso
    Williams
    Force India

I think Toyota and Brawn GP will probably get a race victory this year.

    1. Yeah I know it contradicts my previous post… but I’ve had a re-think and tried to be rational :P

  67. 4 minutes lasted your poor faith in Mclaren

  68. Ferrari/Brawn GP (for the first few races – their car appears extremely strong to start off with but I’m not sure if they can keep it up for the whole season)
    BMW
Toyota/McLaren(unless they get a completely new rear end altogether working)
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Williams/Force India
    STR

  69. I’ll go ahead and say that Brawn GP will dominate the season. (And Barrichelo will finally win the WDC).

  70. Brawn GP
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Williams
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

Wow, it’s hard to try to fit 10 teams in the top 5, they all look good to me except McLaren but they have earned the benefit of my doubt.
(the success boos Mallya craves, are those the kind Hamilton gets?)

  71. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I just wanna say, how fun and exciting does it seem like this season might be. The worst thing for the sport would be stagnation and two teams dominating year after year.

Now we’ve got a very strong challenge from a very well run team in BMW and we’ve got what could be a complete role reversal for the two “phenom” British drivers in F1.

I would LOVE to see Button and Barichello fighting for race wins again this season, and have Hamilton fighting to make it into Q2. Just to see how Hamilton reacts and get some vindication for Button who’s talents have been wasted in the Honda the past couple of years.

    1. It will be interesting to see if Button finally gets a top car. In my opinion he has built a wholly unjustified reputation of being a great driver who was always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Let’s see if he can prove it this year.

    2. Andy, let’s not forget that in a “best of the rest” car in 2004 he actually did do pretty well.

  72. BMW
    Ferrari
    Red Bull
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    McLaren
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  73. BRAWN GP
    FERRARI
    BMW
    TOYOTA
    RED BULL
    RENAULT
    MCLAREN
    WILLIAMS
    SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO
    FORCE INDIA

  74. Ferrari
    BMW
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    McLaren
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  75. what a popular article!!

    1. If you’re interested there’s a list of the 100 most popular articles here:

      https://www.racefans.net/credits-and-contacts/the-f1-fanatic-top-100/

  76. Well for Oz – since this seems to be as far as people want to speculate…

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Renault
    Williams
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Toro Rosso
    McLaren
    Force India

But by the end of the season, constructors should look more like…

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Renault
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

Which means it’s gonna be a ‘character building’ year for the Silver Arrows and the current World Champ in particular. I wonder at what point they might give up on tweaking the MP4-24 and re-focus on 2010. Risky due to the loss in sponsorship returns, but if the chassis is a dud, there will be only so much MCL can do with the aero to correct the lack of rear end traction which seems to be the cause of their current woes.

Would love to see Brawn romp away and confound all the pundits, but lack of funds and the fact they already have gone a lot further down the dev route on this car than most of their rivals, will probably mean they will be reined in by some of the bigger constructors by Monaco and be more midfield fodder by the end of the season. Still, loved the non-plussed reaction from Massa from this weeks testing, on seeing Ruben’s laptime “I don’t think we can go that fast!”.

BMW are the ones to watch I think. Lots of quietly confident sounds been coming from the Munich outfit over the winter and expect their KERS to be the pick of the bunch (Mario was quite adamant that KERS not be pushed back for 12 months at the FOTA meet in Maranello). Kubica is my pick to win the WDC this year.

Ferrari will be strong again this year, but am expecting a resurgent Kimi to send Massa off licking his wounds. Word has it that the Finn has backseated some of the partying to get his edge back for this season’s new challenges. Equally, Massa has not shown himself to be the quickest of drivers to adapt to new situations, and this season is definitely going to throw in plenty of ‘new’.

The Renault looks like a pig, but doesn’t drive as bad – probably the 5th best car on the grid. Alonso is very fast – probably the 2nd fastest man in the field. He will make that car and team work for him this year. Piquet will get the scraps again I’m afraid. Fred should be hot on the heels of Kimi and Bob all season, providing Renault don’t pull the plug (if French workers start losing jobs, they are not going to accept millions spent on F1!).

Pah – enough! I could rant all day, but this is your blog, not mine. You have my picks, only 2 weeks eh? Starting to get twitchy already ;o)

    Salty.

  77. If you trust FA (he said BGP pace is true) and the poll includes car+driver.

    BGP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    Toyota
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Red Bull
    McL
    Force India

Why the duo McL+Ham in that position?. Because I think we will see the real Ham this year, with a car developed by de la Rosa for hamilton, wich is to me not a good combination.

  78. I take it you mean pace only, so as long as one car lasts long enough to run on low fuel on a well-rubbered track, its time stands, and we are not comparing finishing positions.

    In which case, for Australia:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  79. Brawn GP
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    McLaren
    Force India
    Toro Rosso
    Renault

I think the pace will hold up for Brawn GP in the first few rounds- no doubt other teams will challenge and eventually catch them, but they will be at the front of the pack IMHO. McLaren will eventually catch up, but they won’t be out front as ususal to begin with.

  80. I’m gonna scalp Pete Walker’s method of grouping the teams due to the narrow margins of apparent performance levels. However my rankings are a little different. Btw……thanks Pete!

    1. Ferrari
    2. BMW Sauber
    3. Toyota
    4. Brawn GP
    ——
    5. Red Bull
    6. Renault
    7. McLaren
    ——
    8. Toro Rosso
    9. Williams
    10. Force India

  81. End of Season:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    McLaren
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Brawn
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I seriously think everyone is underestimating McLaren. They will bounce back and in Lewis they have without a doubt one of the greatest F1 drivers at the wheel. Heikki I’m seriously not too sure about any more.
I believe in McLaren, their history speaks for itself. Much more so than Ferrari who many people here seem too young to remember had a pretty long ‘drought’ pre-Schumacher/Todt/Brawn with McLaren and Williams bagging most of the success between them.

What I wish for end of season (highest scoring driver):

    McLaren (Ham)
    Brawn (But)
    BMW (Hei)
    Ferrari (Rai)
    Red Bull (Vet)
    Williams (Ros)
    Renault (Alo)
    Torro Rosso (Bou)
    Toyota (Tru)
    Force India (Sut)

Now for the longest two weeks of the year…

  82. This is what i see for Australia…
    Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    McLaren
    Force India
    Cheers :-)

  83. BMW
    Ferrari
    McLaren
    Williams
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  84. Although I hope Vettel manages to finish the season in the top 6.

  85. Keith,
McLaren have now admitted they are way short of he pace of the rest of the pack:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7941572.stm
    cheers

    1. ooops, skimmed your text, and didn’t see you’d added the same from Autosport… sorry for repeating things!

  86. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Williams
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

    IT REALLY IS THIS SIMPLE

  87. final standings:

    1.BMW
    2.Ferrari
    3.Red Bull
    4.Mclaren
    5.Brawn
    6.Toyota
    7.Williams
    8.Renault
    9.Tororoso
    10.Force India

  88. Yeah nic is right with his.
I can definatly see BMW + FERRARI at the top in melbourne

  89. Pedro Andrade
    13th March 2009, 21:34

I’ve tried not to read anyone else’s (apart from Keith’s), as not to get influenced, since I’m very undecided:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Williams
    McLaren
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  90. BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Brawn GP
    Williams
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  91. I can’t be bothered to read all the preceding posts in detail (100+), but i think I agree with Gman again in that Brawn may find it difficult to maintain their advantage as the season progresses. But out of the box you’d have to say
    Brawn
    BMW
    Ferrari
    McLaren

later in the season, I’d modify that to
    Ferrari (whom I dislike)
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Brawn

Overall, and with the apparent Brawn pace, this could be the most exciting season in the passed twenty years. Can’t wait.

  92. Different Toby.

    After the first three flyaways:

    BMW
    Williams
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Ferrari
    McLaren
    Brawn
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

Everyone seems to have written Williams off again, even though they set the second fastest time (per team) at Montmelo. They have a full five test days left next week, which is more than any other team, and they’ve got developments coming for that test. They haven’t even showed us their real front wing yet! Bar a successful protest against their diffuser in Melbourne, Williams could spring a surprise and win the first race!

McLaren are quite frankly in the pooh, Toyota could surprise us, the Brawn GP will be unreliable, as will the Ferrari. BMW is the IT team, Force India isn’t. Dunno about the Red Bull, but the Toro Rosso will be left standing. Renault is slightly in the pooh too.

13 days ’til I can hear the cars from my house, and 15 days ’til showtime – and the ‘orrible ‘oo!!!

  93. Captain Caveman
    13th March 2009, 22:07

    I am going with :-

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    McLaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I know that i have Braun a bit lower than other posts, but i have read in most articles/website etc that they may have been testing without KERS and as a result significantly lighter than some other cars this week.

Also Alonso, Massa and Mclaren stating anything so publicly will be for a reason. they have always played things close to their chests in the past, so i can’t see why anything would change now.

  94. Captain Caveman
    13th March 2009, 22:09

    Brawn not Braun :-)

  95. Captain Caveman come out of your cave. Brawn have publicly stated quite clearly that they aren’t using KERS.

  96. It’s a tough one, but im going for final standings as…

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Mclaren
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

    For Aus

    Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Williams
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Renault
    Mclaren
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

But lets hope Mclaren can turn it around

I would love to see Jenson battling with Hamilton this year

  97. Poor Force India… Almost none of you has put it higher than last. I won’t be an exception:
    BMW
    Ferrari
    McLaren
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  98. If you think Mac will be at the back come Melbourne, you will be in for a big surprise.

  99. Brawn GP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  100. Brawn GP
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    McLaren
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Force India

  101. I was reading an interview in as.com from Alonso and he said that right now the top ten:
    BrawnGP
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Red Bull
    Mclaren
    Williams
    Toro Roso
    Force India

He thinks that is the top ten right now.

  102. 1. Ferrari
    2. Brawn GP
    3. BMW
    4. Williams
    5. Toyota
    6. McLaran
    7. Torro Rosso
    8. Red Bull
    9. Renault
    10. Force India

I know I’m drastic in placing Williams at 4 and Renault at 9, but somehow I think Torro Rosso would be major front runner or atleast steal the show regularly comparing to once last season. Would love if Williams gets on the podium regularly, that Rosberg guy needs a break , high time he gets it. If BMW can get KERS advantage and challenge the Red devils of Ferrari, we are in for one of the best seasons. Waiting .. another 14 days for the weekend :)

  103. at first race:

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    McLaren
    Renault
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I want to see changes at the front so I’m hoping Mclaren’s bad form is genuine and that a few teams can get close to/ahead of Ferrari.

  104. Funny how a few sparks from Brawn took them to the top of most lists, including mine to some extend. I wonder how it’d look if McLarens were at the top of the time sheets, I mean would you even consider Brawn as a contendrs or just play down their grat testing performances to low fuel, sponsor searching schedule. Toyota was super fast at this stage last year and we all know how they performed throughout the season. In my opinion this poll’s(not really a poll) results is caused by many of you replacing Maccas with Brawns in order to keep some britishness at the top. I’m not saying it’s bad or anything, just making a point. I’ve done the same myself with BMW, hoping for Kubica to stand up to the hype his persona creates in Polish hearts. Good luck for all the teams anyway. Well not really all. If you know what I mean…

  105. Ferrari
    BMW
    McLaren
    Renault
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  106. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Renault
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Mclaren
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I think Brawn GP could have been running underweight without the KERSless ballast. Was there scrutineering at Barcelona? I am however wary of my own thought due to comments attributed to Alonso saying he thought the Brawn GP aero was the most sophisticated. You always get the most honest statements from PDLR,FA,or MW across all the drivers.

I think Webber could stick it on pole in Melbourne if he has the car due to the Vettel challenge. I worry about RBR going backwards on development like last year and from the time they got the car out of the box this year. I hope they finally prove me wrong.

  107. For the 2009 season I am going to say:
    1. BMW-Sauber
    2. Ferrari
    3. McLaren
    4. Renault
    5. Red Bull
    6. Williams
    7. Brawn GP
    8. Toyota
    9. Toro Rosso
    10. Force India

Melbourne however, is anyones guess. If the weather for the last week is anything to go by, it’ll be a wet race and they are always lotteries. But I’ll give it a shot:
    1. Renault
    2. BMW-Sauber
    3. McLaren
    4. Toyota
    5. Red Bull
    6. Ferrari
    7. Brawn GP
    8. Williams
    9. Toro Rosso
    10. Force India

I think a team fooled by KERS will be in trouble. So i will pick the known non-KERS starters at the top. McLaren (as things stand) are at the rear end (as the rear end is there main problem.

    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    BMW
    Ferrari
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  110. For Melbourne:

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Renault
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

At the end of the season:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    Toyota
    McLaren
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  111. At the first few races; the first tier of teams will include

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    RedBull

However; by the time the european leg starts : the first tier would include

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    Mclaren
    Toyota
    RedBull

And by the season ending Abu-Dhabi : the first tier would include

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Renault

I would put my money on a new world champion this year. Kimi; Alonso; Lewis won’t win the WDC; I feel.

  115. the Sri lankan
    14th March 2009, 13:49

    for melbourne i’d say

    Ferrari
    BMW tied with Toyota
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Renault
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

no one has faith on Toyota but if you combine all the test sessions they were always lingering around 4th place. this suggest that tis car maybe a winner indeed and also in a qualifying run they beat every other team. i might be wrong beacuse everyones doing their own different program, and you have to take everything into consideration and the fact that this is only a prediction. ferrari had the quickest car and they didnt win in melbourne last year or, finish for that matter.

    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  118. I’d rather rank the drivers, as someone has said, Hamilton gets an advantage over Kovi- remember Alonso and McLaren?

    Ferrari
    BMW
Red Bull & Toyota tie (only because of Vettel)
    McLaren
Brawn & Renault tie (car vs. talent)
    Williams & Toro tie
F India (always going to be backfield until the owner steps aside; am I the only person who thinks he’s a jerk store without even knowing him personally?)

By the end of the Season the Ferrar, McLaren, BMW, Renault show will become clear again and the only surprise will be how well Vettel does in the Red Bull. I hope Ferrari will pick him up and give up Massa, but more likely Kimi will retire and they’ll get Alonso instead.

    1. Really really hope to see Vettel in the Ferrari next year or in 2011.. A German in an Italian team, all over again!! Ah.. Heaven!! :)

i actually agree vijay mallay is a dimvit that throws rideculous sums of money at a problem hoping it would go away. while he may be F1 fan material he’s definitly not associated with success in F1.

  119. Ferrari
    BMW
McLaren (99% sure they’ll come up with something.. They always have!!)
Brawn GP (Too early to say, extremely fast one-lap pace, but who knows over an entire race distance??)
    Red Bull
    Renault/Toyota
    STR-Ferrari/Williams
    Force India

These are my top 10, in order of fighting for the C’ship.. Let’s hope Ferrari get their pitstops right this time atleast!!

  120. rank the drivers.

    14th March 2009, 19:56

I really hope the Mclaren becomes competitive.

After observing the Barcelona tests, i rank them like this.

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Mclaren
    Force India
    Williams
    Toro Rosso

  123. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Renault
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Force India
    Torro Rosso

Come to think of it Keith, we should have a regular poll at every GP on guessing who will be at the podium. ;-)

    1. We do! I’m trying to get some prizes for this year…

  124. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Williams
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  125. BMW
    Ferrari
    Toyota
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Mclaren
    Renault
    Williams
    Force India
    Toro Rosso

But I think Mclaren will get up to 4th or 3rd by the end of the season.

  126. BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Williams
    Force India
    Mclaren
    Toro Rosso

  127. In australia:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    renault
    Williams
    Mclaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

By the end of the season:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Toro Rosso
    Brawn
    Toyota
    renault
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Force India

yes, I do believe Toro Rosso will finish 4th. They just seem to be a good team and although they’ll have a slow start, I really do think they will end up doing well and I wouldnt be suprised by the time we get to Brazil and Abu Dhabi that Toro Rosso will be challenging for podiums more so than BMW and Brawn.

  128. Renault
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn GP
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Toyota
    Torro Rosso
    Williams
    Force India

finally someone whose as optimistic as me thank you KingHamilton yes i know they didn’t have enough time to test their 09 machine but seeing what they did last season when they got their STR3 this could be the same story very fast and always there abouts and who knows could be a couple of wins this year :D

  130. Ferrari
    BMW
    Brawn
    Toyota
    Williams
    McLaren
    Red Bull
    Renault
    Scuderia Toro Rosso
    Force India

I think there isn’t a lot of differance between either Ferrari, BMW, Toyota and Williams. I’ve put Brawn between them because of the latest test sessions, because it can either be 1st or 5th.

After these five I hope McLaren will get it together and also Renault is still in pursuit.

  131. Ferrari
    Brawn
    BMW
    Toyota
    Renault
    Williams
    Redbull
    Mclaren
    Torro Rosso
    Force India

  132. I would like to make a point to almost everybody who has commented so far on how bad mclaren may do this coming season.
I am not a big Mclaren fan, though i think they are ok, but if you look at statistics over the years and see where Mclaren having been finishing in the constructors rankings then even in their worst years 1992 through to 1997 and again in 2004 their finishing record is way better than many of you are predicting. For instance…

1992 they finished 2nd with honda engines
1993 they finished 2nd with ford engines
1994 they finished 4th with peugeot engines
1995 they finished 4th with mercedes engines
1996 they finished 4th with mercedes engines
1997 they finished 4th with merceded engines
2004 they finished 5th with merceds engines

So as you can see they haven’t done aything as bad as people are predicting.

If they are gonna do as bad as that then they must have done somthe catastrophicaly bad, and i cannot see that from Mclaren.

It would be nice to have a season like 2003 with so many different winners. But without Ferrari winning the constructors.

  133. For Melbourne:

BMW…….they are overall tests second but car is good
    Ferrari…technical problems
    Renault…Alonso is a genius
Brawn GP..if they are so good as now.
Toyota….just because they can’afrd to go bad
Red Bull..Vettel is another after Alonso…so….
    Williams..experience but no risk
McLaren…spent too much time nn last year car
    Toro Rosso..well
Force India..just because I do not know this VJM man

At the end of the season:

    Ferrari
    BMW
    Renault
    Toyota
    McLaren
    Brawn GP
    Red Bull
    Williams
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

  134. 2009 final standings:
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Mclaren
    Toyota
    RedBull
    Brawn
    Renault
    TorroRosso
    Williams
    ForceIndia

  135. Again im agreeing with Keith

    BMW
    Ferrari
    Brawn GP
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    McLaren
    Williams
    Renault
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

And as im a BMW+Kubica fan id love to see him do well, but i really think Heildfeld has a big enough advantage over the new system to do better overall :/ Im not sure. But what i am sure is that Mclaren being in trouble at the moment is a very big understatement, however by the end of the week i could be proven wrong. it all depends in which areas the Mclaren engineers look into first as the source of the problem. I really am curious as to what it is and to whether they will share with us, what went wrong. If they manage to fix it without completely rehauling the whole car that is :) Even though its supposed to look like the whole grid is going to change, i definatly think could easily tell who is in contention for the title. Unless a front runner knocks a horrid looking front wing off in the first corner that is :)

  136. Brawn GP
    Renault
    Ferrari
    BMW
    Toyota
    Red Bull
    Williams
    McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Force India

I have based the list on the best driver of the team and on weather of not the team is running KERS (and other factors). I feel that the Renault has been severely underestimated this season and expect the McLaren to in the top 4 teams as early as the Spanish GP. Then again we just need to wait for a couple of weeks to get the pecking order

  137. Here it goes…

    1. Ferrari – Brawn may be quick in testing but on race day???

    2. Brawn – Hoping against hope they will spring the biggest suprise F1 has seen for a loooooooong time

    3. BMW – hopefully Kubica can challenge all the way through the season (unlike last year)

    4. Toyota – Both drivers have looked quick

    5. Red Bull – at least with Vettel at the wheel the RB5 has looked quick, and last time there was a big technical change (1998) Newey’s McLarens were somewhat faster than the opposition

    6. Renault – Alonso is still the fastest guy in F1, despite his tantrum throwing in ’07. The Renault has been up and down though.

    7. Toro Rosso – Showed last year what they could do. If Vettel had stayed would have been further up the order.

    8. Williams – Struggling in testing but not as much as…

    9. McLaren – What have they done? Seemingly one of the slowest cars on the grid, despite factory engines and one of the biggest budgets in F1. If it wasn’t for Lewis being a quick driver they’d be last. It’ll be interesting to see where Heikki qualifies in melbourne…

    10. Force India – I really like their new paint scheme, it looks fresh and bright. Still slow, but they will look pretty while being lapped.
