With the first two practice sessions out of the way it’s time for the traditional F1 Fanatic predictions game!
But this year it’s different – this year we’re playing for prizes…
The 2009 F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship (F1FPC) will run over 15 rounds starting with the Chinese Grand Prix. You’ve got two non-championship rounds to hone your predicting skills to a fine art.
Here’s how the game works:
1. Predictions have to be made between the end of FP2 and the beginning of FP3.
2. Only one set of predictions per person.
3. You have to predict (a) Who will be on pole position and (b) What the top three finishers will be.
4. Players score ten points for correctly guessing the pole sitter, ten points for correctly naming one of the top three in their correct position, 25 for naming two of the top three and 50 for naming the top three correctly.
5. Whoever scores the most points over the 15 races from round three (China) to 17 (Abu Dhabi) scoops the grand prize. There will also be runners-up prizes…
Details of the prizes will be announced later. In the meantime, let’s get on with making our predictions for this weekend. Remember – this one doesn’t count towards the Predictions Championship.

Sorry to jump off topic, but did anyone else follow practice on SpeedTV? The coverage was absolutely awful, with no sounds from the cars! Just dead space with the commentators talking. It’s obvious none of them knew the TV audience could not hear because you could hear them breathing, whispering, etc…During onboard shots they were talking about how good the new engines still sounded with the revs dropped, but we can’t hear anything! Very very disappointed…

Tricky. I don’t know how regularly the Court of Appeal overturns Stewards decisions, I would guess rarely….

Lots of attrition on turn 1 on lap 1. Very few overtaking moves except for a few into turn 1. Most of the excitement will be from spins due to lack of grip from cooling track temperature and bumpy track. Starting grid and final finishing grid will not resemble each other at all due to attrition and spins.
Barrichello will fuel heavy and benefit from attrition and staggered pit stops. Trulli will start from near #4 and Nakajima will lose spots into turn 1 on lap 1.

my personal opinion is that Barrichello is a faster and more aggressive driver than Button so i really don’t think Button should be the favorite, he never throws caution to the wind!!

well im thinking Bourdais because if there’s any of the chaos like last eyar and Bourdais in a terrible STR2 soldiered on and couldve finished higher if it wasn’t for the engine blowing up so im thinking more of the same this year well Vettel im confident in him because his shown the pace and shown his fast and i think the cars will be extremely close did anyone see Sutil harrasing Raikkonen in FP2 i know its just practice but come on that was some awesome stuff :)

Button gets pole and also the victory in the race. I think the pole-sitter has won 4 of the last 5 Aussie races or 5 of the last 6 or something like that.
Nico should be on the podium. He got his first podium here last year. I pick him to finish 2nd.
There will be a huge battle for 3rd between Kimi, Trulli and Barrichello. I am going w/ Kimi, although this is not a strong endorsement.
Pole: Button (not a top driver, but in the fastest car by a mile)

Nico – 2nd
Kimi – 3rd
I think Kimi will win the championship this year.

Alright, for the serious predictions:
Pole: Nico Rosberg
1st- Nico Rosberg
2nd- Jenson Button
3rd- Rubens Barrichello
Nico’s speed right now is undeniable. He’s also shown to be a prodigious street racer (Podiums at Albert Park and Singapore and in the points at Valencia last year; always a quick qualifier at Monaco; in the points the last two years at Albert Park). I think he’s got it this weekend.
Button and Barrichello are also very quick, and both have been very good at Albert Park in the past. Button is also a very good street racer. I think Brawn may have the fastest car right now, but they may have some setup issues to sort out based on what Jenson has said in his in-car radio transmissions and to the media.
Overall, I think the Williams and Brawn are equal in terms of downforce. They’re setting about equal times in Sector 3; Nico just seems to be a bit quicker in Sectors 1 and 2, which are bumpier and have slower corners.
However, if there’s one Grand Prix on the circuit that is completely unpredictable, it is the Australian Grand Prix. Don’t be surprised to see 2-3, perhaps more, saftey car periods, and probably one that cocks up the fuel strategies.
