Australian GP grid and race weights

More bad news for Brawn GP’s rivals: as well as having locked out the front row of the grid, they are also carrying more fuel than anyone Q1 apart from Timo Glock.

Robert Kubica’s strong qualifying position appears to have been partly fuel-assisted as he is the lightest driver on the grid.

Before his exclusion, Timo Glock was the heaviest driver in the top ten and out-qualified team mate Jarno Trulli despite having 10kg more fuel.

Lewis Hamilton had been moved to the back of the grid following repairs to his McLaren and appears to be running light in an effort to make up places early on in the race.

Here is the grid for Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix and the declared starting weight of each car:

1. Jenson Button – 664.5kg
2. Rubens Barrichello – 666.5kg
3. Sebastien Vettel – 657kg
4. Robert Kubica – 650kg
5. Nico Rosberg – 657kg
6. Felipe Massa – 654kg
7. Kimi Raikkonen – 655.5kg
8. Mark Webber – 662kg
9. Nick Heidfeld – 691.5kg
10. Fernando Alonso – 680.7kg
11. Kazuki Nakajima – 685.3kg
12. Heikki Kovalainen – 690.6kg
13. Sebastien Buemi – 675.5kg
14. Nelson Piquet – 694.1kg
15. Giancarlo Fisichella – 689kg
16. Adrian Sutil – 684.5kg
17. Sebastien Bourdais – 662.5kg
18. Lewis Hamilton – 655kg
19. Jarno Trulli* – 660kg
20. Timo Glock* – 670kg

  1. It’s a real shame about Glock really, he looked like he could have had a really good race.

Vettel has done an impressive job considering his lack of practice time, it’ll be interesting to see how well he does this season.

  2. Here’e hoping Flava-Flav chokes on those sour grapes he was spewing during testing about BrawnGP’s weights.

    Sucks to be you Flavio!

  3. The Brawn’s are really on it … great gar and great drivers … Congrats to them and I hope this will be a fruitful season for the team specially both their drivers

  4. Piquet – waste of good fuel! He’ll never last that long!

    1. haha, maybe they’re trying to slow him down and keep him on the road….

  5. Do the weights include or exclude the driver?

  6. @ Jonathan

Include… The cars, including the drivers has to weigh 605kg, everything else on top you can assume is fuel.

Correction – The dry weight of the car including the driver is not allowed to be less than 605kg. This means that a car including the driver can weigh anywhere upwards of 605kg but due to the benifits of a light car you can assume that all the cars dry weights are 605kg.

  7. I’m really happy for Jenson, but i think its unfair that Toyota were ruled illegal, after passing thee technical checkup on Thursday! Shame on Ferrari too!!!

    1. Those were static tests; it does make sense that a protest involving flexible wings could only be lodged on Friday at the earliest.

  8. Good for Brawn GP! Jenson & Rubens are quite similar on weight, please help me, 1 Litre of fuel weight 0.7 Kg? and 3 Lts. is just lss than 1 lap. Anyway, Rubens lap time were the faster.

  9. can anyone predict the laps in which each driver might come into the pits? e.g lap 24 Hamilton etc. I’m confused with the weights thing it isn’t helping much.

  10. Any ideas of what lap they’re be pitting with these times?

  11. Seems to me that Kubica and Ferraris are light, ant they’ll be the first to stop.
Brawns are in good shape, and remain the favourite. I didn’t get information about the race pace, but Jenson and Rubens could get away and see the others again at the end of the race.
Heidfeld and Alonso have good chances of recovering, it’ will depends a lot on ability to overtake somebody in front of them.
Exciting race. I agree on this rule, to make available informations on weight of the cars after qualifying.
    See you tomorrow people!

  12. Love this info, a real significant insight. Awesome that the Brawn’s were not running light.
Strange strategy from Lewis there. Thought he would have brimmed the tank and tried for a 1 stop. I mean he is carrying KERS also so VERY light on juice?
Kubica flattering to deceive as ever. For me the least interesting character in F1. Not a bad driver though :)

  13. why does the BBC only repeat the race not the race and the interviews etc like they do live? its really annoying as now im going to have to wakeup at 6:00 :(

    1. There was a question about getting up to watch the race live?
I’m nackered as it is after watching bits of P1, P3 and Quali live (if it hadn’t been for work P2 also) and then failing to fall asleep after. However this should bring on an early night and then its the race!

  14. Oh what a big spoiler to know weight of cars. Just stupid.

    1. Chaostheory – couldn’t disagree more.

    2. @chaostheory

If you didn’t want to know, then why did you click the link to this page??

  15. If Glock outqualified Trulli, why was Timo classified behind Jarno, after both of them were punished? Because of the car numbers?

It seems unfair to me… can anyone explain it? I really didn’t understand…

    1. I’ve been wondering that. Anyone?

    2. I don’t think qualifying matters after you have been disqualified. It is as if you have not participated in qualifying. This means that the one with the highest number (in this case Trulli)is classified in front.

This is what i think! no real evidence to support it however it makes sense to me!
hope it helped :) any other website on the laps everyone will be pitting?

The Official Have Said This Is The Grid, Which Confuses Me

Piquet & Fisichella Were Both Out In Q1 But Start Ahead Of Nakajima Who Got Put Out In Q2. They Grid Confuses Me, With Glock And Trulli Being Penalised And Hamilton.

  17. The top eight will pull away from Nick Heidfeld. He is 30 kg heavier than Mark Webber in front of him, and heavier than anyone behind him except for Piquet, who doesn’t count.

Not sure what that translates to in terms of seconds per lap, but my prediction is a Trulli train bunched behind Heidfeld for the first half of the race.

Except Nick has KERS so he can rocket past poor ol Mark at the start and annoy him for the next 58 laps by being unpassable!!!

  18. LOL. on Terry.

  19. Ha ha…The Heidfeld Express… with Jarno as the caboose for a change.

The start of this race is going to be fantastic!

  20. how about a big pile up at the first corner…still possible…I mean at least possible flying front wings. That can change an order
