Here’s today’s round-up:

Some great pictures of Ferrari F1 cars through the years. Thanks to Dusty for the tip.

Whitmarsh on FOTA’s future plans (Autosport, subscription required)

“I talked to Jean and he’s made clear what he wants. There are some challenges and we’ve got to try and understand and respect that. He’s got a responsibility. The FIA has a responsibility to the sport – so does Bernie – so we aren’t always going to agree, of course. But I think some of the changes he’s made; adding a driver to the stewards, has doubled confidence people had in the stewarding system, frankly.”

Cutting it fine on fuel (James Allen)

“It looks like Vettel planned the move all along, having lost out in qualifying due to a mechanical failure on his car, he had a strategy which would give him a golden lap, when Webber would be saving fuel, in which to attack him. And if this is the case then it must have been sanctioned by the team. Perhaps they felt they owed it to him after letting him down again with the car in qualifying.”

Tech desk – Turkey (Auto Moto 365)

McLaren with their well routed duct and efficient snorkel, have less of a problem. So along the same lines as the Ferrari duct, Adrian Newey has penned a split duct that uses a fluid switch to route the airflow between two branches of the duct. The fluid switch is analogous to an electrical switch with sends current down one direction in a circuit dependent on the resistance the differing branches provide.”

Pictures of the construction work going on at Silverstone. The new pits should be open in time for the 2011 Grand Prix.

Comments of the day

We had a great impromptu caption contest on yesterday’s Red Bull story. I honestly can’t pick a favourite, just make sure you head over there and join in!

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday to Nathan Bradley!

On this day in F1

The first Swiss Grand Prix was held on this day 60 years ago at the Bremgarten circuit near Berne.

The tree-lined circuit with its largely cobbled surface was a punishing venue for a race even by the standards of the 1950s. It held several pre-championship Grands Prix and was the scene of Achille Varzi’s death in 1948.

As with many races in the first year of the world championship the Swiss round was dominated by Alfa Romeo, with eventual champion Giuseppe Farina winning.

it continued to hold championship races until Switzerland banned motor racing following the Le Mans disaster in 1955. Despite that modern F1 still has a Swiss team (Sauber) and a Swiss driver (Sebastien Buemi).

The race was even revived in 1982, but held at the Dijon circuit in France.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to future British GPs starting after Club and not Woodcote. As long as it secures the long term future of the race at Silverstone, though, I’m all for it.

Also, I know this is really off-topic but I couldn’t think of anywhere else to put it.

Does anyone else here play ModNation Racers on the PS3 at all? I grabbed it a couple of weeks ago and I think it’s fantastic, especially looking at all the F1 related stuff you can download. The creativity of some people amazes me. I made an attempt at making Kobayashi and now I’m thinking about making a Keith Collantine character!

    http://community.modnation.com/en-us/creations/405433

Anyone else in the AU region on here playing this at all?

Fraid not mate, if you need a buddy in KillZone 2 i’m your guy.

For those that don’t know what ModNation is, why not have a look at the hilarious advert.

My PS3 online name is el_morlo if anyone wants to add me… I don’t really have many decent racing games yet though, I usually have to resort to racing on GTA IV, which is fun but it’s no Gran Turismo!

      1. Lol, Yeah I still do most of my racing in GTA IV too :0

Although for Turkey I did a lot of laps on that track in GRID. It’s always nice to able to quickly recognize where the car is when you seen an on-board picture.

I have another quiz for y’all, I made this one a few months ago. I suggest that anyone who gets less than 50% leaves this site until they have a geeky enough F1 knowledge!

Unfortunately for some reason I can’t post the direct link in the comments, but if you click this Google link, the quiz will be the first option at the top of the page

    1. Wow, I am officially an F1 dumbo and therefore banning myself from this site.

      1. There arn’t going to be many people left on this site if we get kicked of when we fail. LOL

        Only 35% :(

    2. HA! 55%

      Barely, but passing is passing.

      1. 60 %! Not fantastic, but good enough to pass.

      2. 75%, better at passing than Vettel.

        1. Keith Lol-lantine!
I nominate this for comment of the day!

      3. Same!! I Don’t think Keith will be too happy when lots of regulares don;t turn up tomorrow :P

    3. 90%,I got the Kemmel question wrong and the shortest track quiz wrong.

      Fantastic quiz! Marvelous, excellent, brilliant!
Why do I say this? Because I just got 85%!
But that’s it; I have now used up an entire decade’s worth of flukey, pick-any-one-of-four, one-answer-has-to-be-right type of luck. No Lotto for me then.

Oh god, what a birthday present…not! I only got 6 right, I guess that means I’m banned! :)

      Nathan

    6. 90%, so i’m therefore a genius

      1. 80%. I should be happy with that, but as a perfectionist I’m not!

    7. 40%… need more pre-1994 knowledge than I have!

    8. 45! oh dear. Ned can you please make another quiz but with purely photo questions? like that hamilton one.

      1. I agree, more photo questions

    9. 70%, I’m happy enough with that!

  4. Really appreciate the you tube videos of f1 past.

  5. Happy Birthday Nathan Bradley! its my birthday today too… isn’t it great!?

How is the forum going by the way Keith?

Yes happy birthday Nathan, and Jezson too. The sooner the Forum comes back the sooner youcan start photoshopping us some nice new liveries!

    3. happy bday to you both! can’t wait to see more photoshopped f1 cars on the forum when its back up.

  6. Is motor racing still banned in Switzerland or has that been lifted?

    1. Still banned. There was talking of it being lifted a few years ago but it didn’t happen.

I always found it incredibly ironic that Switzerland ended up winning the A1GP title a couple of years ago before the series folded. Not bad for a country where racing is banned.

        1. Racing may be banned in Switzerland but other forms of motorsports like hillclimbing (where Peter Sauber started) and rallying, are still permitted because they’re events against the clock rather than against other competitors directly.

Aspiring Swiss racing drivers only have to drive a few hours to reach the circuits of France, Italy and Germany.

Before Sebastien Buemi there were various Swiss F1 drivers over the years – notably Jo Siffert (won two GPs before his death at Brands Hatch in 1971) and Clay Regazzoni (won five GPs for Ferrari and Williams before being paralysed at Long Beach in 1980). There were others – including the infamous Jean-Denis Deletraz!

          1. Delatraz might be a bad example…

They also won gold in the beach volleyball at the Olympics a few years back even though they are landlocked and thus have no beaches! Switzerland truly is the country of irony

I think you’re dead right here, Ned.

They make the best chocolate, but aren’t fat.
They make the best army knives, but you never see that at war.
They make the best watches, but are always late (probably).
They make the best cheese, but…er,…they’re all lactose-intolerant?

          2. Don’t forget Alinghi…

  7. Keith, since yesterday, every time I open the web in my iPhone (full version not the mobile one), it doesn’t look well. Menus, images, ads banners are not aligned properly.

Have you changed something in the web site?

    Just in case.

    1. Is this the regular site or the mobile version?

      1. The regular site Keith.

        The mobile version works well.

  8. It’s my birthday as well!!!

COTD, I vote for Racing Puma..

Had me giggling like a girl.. Nice one!

  10. Switzerland is a wonderful country & they have some of the best driving road in the world so why don’t they hold F1 race? I think Bernie can with the help of FIA & the Swiss people who are F1 fans.

Circuit racing was banned in Switzerland after the 1955 Le Mans tragedy. Before the war there had been a Swiss GP on a street circuit in Bremgarten and I think this continued in the early 1950’s as well.
A couple of years ago, the Swiss Parliament narrowly voted to un-ban racing, but it was not ratified by the upper house (Senate).

    Silverstone’s new pit complex.
Not that it will ever trouble me personally, but how do you get to it? Is there a tunnel, or does all the traffic have to come across the bridge on the Hangar Straight?

  12. No wonder Hamilton was subdued on the podium an after the race, serious miscomunication at McLaren. He asked McLaren after they said they were saving fuel whether Jenson would pass him or not if he backed of for fuel saving, they specifically told him that Jenson would not attempt a pass, despite how he was catching him.

Go watch it, pretty good Race Edit for Turkey, with some incredibly illuminaiting team radio. It seriously bothered me how unexcited Hamilton seemed by that win, seems he had a damn good reason to be unhappy. Hope they sort that out at McLaren, this sort of thing is ridiculously distructive.

Good call Scribe, very interesting stuff. If I were Hamilton I’d have been a bit miffed too, although I still think he should have celebrated a bit more. The podium was like a funeral ceremony!

  13. BBC gossip roundup today has a mention for the print edition of autosport – apparently Ciaron Pilbeam was told by Horner that Webber had to let Vettel past – but “couldn’t bring himself to pass on the message”.

    ….

    Aren’t team orders banned?
Surely this is something that the FIA need to look into? Or will we have another “unless someone makes a complaint we can’t look into it, thanks” Mosely dodge-the-red-hot-problem affair?

    1. Aww man, Redbull have properly turned on us. Become a right old nasty team.

Thats awful, Hamilton was dropping back! Why should Webber give up the place, it’s disgusting.

    Interesting developments overseas http://www.indycar.com/news/show/55-izod-indycar-series/37859-next-engine-formula-is-all-inclusive/

as F1 is going MORE spec-series, Indy is moving away.

  15. I can’t remember this being mentioned before, and I just noticed it. Williams announced their revenues and profit a couple days ago:

“The 2008/2009 figures, to be submitted formally next week, showed revenues for the 13 month period at 108.3 million pounds ($158.1 million), compared to 125.6 million the year before.

The former world champions made a profit of 4.5 million pounds, compared to a previous 9.2 million.”
