Button fastest in Canada first practice

Jenson Button topped the times in first practice with a 1'18.127

Jenson Button was fastest in the first practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Four Mercedes-powered cars occupied the first four places with Michael Schumacher second ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve proved very low on grip as it welcomed F1 cars for the first time in two years – Karun Chandhok described it as “the greasiest track I’ve ever driven on.”

That meant very few cars went out to begin with, though gradually many of the drivers who were learning the track for the first time made their first, tentative steps onto the slippery track.

Although several drivers skidded off the track no-one made it as far as a barrier. Lucas di Grassi was the only driver to fail to set a time, stopping on his fourth lap.

With Timo Glock the slowest of the runners it was a poor session for Virgin.

The two McLarens occupied the top of the times sheets for much of the session before Schumacher split them with a late effort 0.15s off Button’s best.

As we have often seen in Friday practice sessions, the Red Bulls and the Ferraris did not seem to be chasing fastest times. Sebastian Vettel moved up to fifth towards the end of the session, with Mark Webber down in 14th.

Rubens Barrichello ended his session being pushed towards the Williams garage with an apparent technical problem.

    1. Williams seem to be doing better here, though it is only practice. What happened to Di Grassi, he isn’t on the lsigt?

      1. Di Grassi stopped next to the grass before setting a time, that’s why he is not in the list.

In this context, what does setting a time mean? Di Grassi completed 4 laps so he must have set a time even if it was slow.

Do the teams tell the stewards when they are doing an instalation lap and when they wish to do a timed lap?

          1. If you’re exiting/entering the pits, you cannot set a time.

    2. first one out with the results again. F1Fanatic speeds :-D

    3. I meant list, not lsigt! :D

He didn’t turn a lap time because he had a failure or something like that, it didn’t show a replay of exactly what happened :(

    4. Did Chandhok find a secret KERS device or Turbo button, or is Lotus slowing down here?

    5. Mclaren have this in the bag. I think a Mclaren 1-2 with someone random on the podium with them.

    6. HRT have been relatively high up in the speed traps throughout the season from what I’ve seen. It’s a slippery car so I’m not too surprised if they finish best of the new teams this race

    7. Kubica has the fastest speed in sector 1, 2nd highest speeds in sector 2 and 3 and 2nd highest in the speed trap.

Petrov has the 3rd fastest speeds in sector 1 and 2, the highest speeds in sector 3 and the highest in the speed trap!

I thought the Mclarens were easily the fastest! What’s happening here??

      1. well, they could be sacrificing some of their speed advantage to increase the wing angles, allowing a better overall package.

        1. But they would’ve tried using their straight line speed strength for at least some part of the session?

And what’s up with the Renaults?? Very encouraging!

          1. Could also be that the Mclarens arent trying too hard.

      2. Petrov has been very fast in the speed traps at a lot of races. The Sauber’s have been as well, so I’m a bit surprised to see them so far down the time sheets here.

    8. I love Nick Heidfeld.

      1. And he loves you not.

      2. I quite liked him as a guest comentator, he should do this more often!

    9. I bet that Schumacher will be the champion next year.
      this man is a magician.

    10. How heavy do you think Vettel was fuelled? I think that he was quite light :S Also surprising to see Button 2 tenths up on Hamilton, even though they set their times at a similar time in the session; maybe the smooth Button exits onto straights better than the rough and ready Hamilton. Would be interesting to see their relative speeds over the lap Keith….. ;)

      1. Did you see Hamilton sliding around all over the track? Vettel was having some hairy moments as well.

      2. Oh my good God!

    11. I think that Renault may not have been sparing their engine as much as Mclaren, thus becoming faster at the speed trap but who knows? Maybe we will see Petrov adn Kubica both in Q3 this time around..

    12. I bet a Schumacher’s podium on sunday’s race.

    13. I think this will be the weekend where we will actually see Red Bull struggle. I reckon Mercedes, Mclaren and Robert Kubica have this GP sorted – they just need to decide between them which order they’ll finish in.

    14. This will be Hamilton show because Button something new parts that why faster then Hamilton, so tomorrow Hamilton will try maybe or next round?

    15. As a Michael Schumacher and Ferrari supporter, moments to celebrate have been precious few :-|. Its good to see Michael ahead of Nico yet again.

    16. I love fact the downforce of the HRT is so bad it actually makes it fast in a straight line!

      1. you say it’s bad, but it’s a relative thing remember. any formula one car is a ridiculously complex piece of machinery; just to manage the engines revving that high is phenomenal.
so it’s not “bad”, it’s just less effective than the others’!

    17. Pleasantly surprised at Mercedes being right up there! Especially after all the hoo-har about their top speed. Great to see Renault very seriously getting into the mix.

Don’t know about anyone else, but i’m more excited about this GP than any other so far. It’s going to be great.

    18. Schumy loves this track…so he could pull his 1st win this year ! But JB is going to win the WDC again this year!

      1. Michael is getting the bit between his teeth again,he is absolute magic to watch.

    19. The Mercedes powerful engine making it’s make on the track which will help them in the race.Nice to see Karun Chandhok & HRT doing a good amount of progress hope they continue that through out the weekend.I am surprise not to see the Ferrari out there in the top 3 as I thought on a circuit where downforce is less effected the horses of the Ferrari engine should have helped them to be a bit further ahead then the rivals.
