Vettel fastest after front wing scare

Sebastian Vettel was fastest in the final practice session at Silverstone.

But he had a scare on his final lap when his front wing failed as he approached the fast new Abbey corner. The nose suddenly collapsed, causing the wing to drag along the floor.

Vettel went straight on but was able to bring the car under control in the run-off area and avoid what could have been a huge crash.

Fernando Alonso was fastest in the early part of the session but the Red Bull pair were able to beat the Ferrari by almost two-tenths of a second.

The two McLarens came out early as they worked on a new set-up without the exhaust-driven diffuser, which were removed from their cars overnight.

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both went off at Abbey again during the session.

Felipe Massa and Adrian Sutil both had problems at Copse. Sutil was the most dramatic, the Force India driver fighting to keep his car under control after hitting the exit kerb hard.

Sutil’s session was ended early by a gearbox problem. Timo Glock also had difficulties in his Virgin, a throttle failure limiting him to just six laps.

    1. What was Webber doing all session long?

      1. he said he wasn’t going to be trying to put in fast times because of his problems yesterday, not until the end of the session anyway.

      2. He had an electrical problem in P2 yesterday and didn’t get to do heavy fuel runs in the last 20 minutes like others so he probably did them today.

like ted kravitz said “seems that thee problems isnt has bad has it seemed” or something like this i think everyone but redbull wants to see a great reace til now this first time i remember seeing a wing simply colapsing from it own mountings

from first glance it seemed to be a bit weared the fitting holes on the chassis part when they parked the car it was visible that the red bull mechanic was able to put it back when rolling the car backwards to the garage which may indicate further scare next time the front wing gets a big amount of force its going to do the same

    3. The wing didn’t break, it was the nose cone mounting that broke.

    4. Wow, a massive improvement from Petrov. He’s closer to Kubica than he has been all year. I hope he can carry that momentum into qualifying, but where one earth is he pulling an extra half a second from?

      1. He looked pretty good yesterday too. Definitely a candidate for Q3 again.

        1. Well, I haven’t been able to follow it since we don’t get images, But I’m willing to bet that he’s taken to the new section more than Kubica has. The Pole was pretty critical of it.

Barring reliability issues, we’re probably about to see a Red Bull pole and victory on sunday.

    6. Nice one Pedro!

      1. yep, this one’s been overlooked massively. what an amazing performance.

    7. What was the problem with Alonso’s car. Ferrari said it was a water leak.. but it seemed that they were very worried about it.

      1. You ever had a water leak in your car before? Depending on where it is, it can be pretty serious.

        1. Gené said it seems a water leak from the engine. If that’s so maybe they’ll have to change the engine again and counting.

    8. Anyone willing to bet that Button will be out at the end of Q2?

      1. Yep. I think he will either just about make it to Q3.. and qualify 10th.. or he should be out in Q2.

    9. Apart from Malaysia which doesn’t really count anyway, this might be the first time Schumacher out qualifies a McLaren.

      1. He outqualified Button at Bahrain and Monaco, and Hamilton in Australia.

    10. Seems to be a close race this afternoon. Could be dangerous in the P4->P8 places. lots of ground to loose to one mistake.
