If you hide Vettel it looks normal.

if you hide vettel, it looks like a great championship battle.

surely i don’t want this trend to continue or it’s going to be a boring season with lots of overtaking. now how ironic is that!a

34 points ahead after 100 points being available…*cries*

I guess its hard to bet against anyone but Vettel for the championship now.

Wow 34 points… that’s a huge lead

With the new scoring system I’m totaly lost as to whether it’s a huge lead or a small one. I just don’t feel it.

It’s about the equivalent of 12-13 points under the old system – well over a race win’s worth.
Icthyes (@icthyes)
8th May 2011, 15:08
Let’s say Hamilton wins and Vettel comes 2nd in every race after this. It would take five races before Hamilton overtook Vettel.

Not really,Alonso at some point last season was 41 points behind Hamilton when people laughed when he declared he could still win the championship,…really its not that huge of a lead
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
9th May 2011, 9:11
If they did then they should have better acquainted themselves with the points system. Alonso’s championship chance halfway through last year were not unrealistic, and I’m not saying that in retrospect – I thought so at the time.

9th May 2011, 11:37
so would you still feel the same this year if vettel opened a 50 point lead,to either alo or ham that theyd stand a chance?i wouldnt count on it…im personally dissapointed that neither of the other top teams are yet to match the rb7,pole predictions is as easy as it ever gets, somebody should do something abt this 1 car domination

f1.com displaying 21 points for Petrov not 19.
I think he had 17. Plus 4 for 8th.

I can’t really see a future for Williams at the moment.

It’d be sad to see them leave the sport which is why they need a buyout now.

Remember when Schumacher won his 2002 title in July? I wonder how soon Vettel can seal it this year.

If I had to guess.. he should wrap up the title in Japan.

This is depressing.
While the races have been exciting, the championship competition has been far from it.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Vettel and all the guys in Red Bull but I don’t like it when one driver and team dominates. It’s the main reason I stopped watching F1 back in the early 2000s.
Todfod (@todfod)
8th May 2011, 19:21
I understand. The only championships I didn’t follow with much interest were 2002, and 2004

At this rate, Vettel can afford a 3 race holiday mid season and still come back and win the championship with a wide margin.
bosyber (@bosyber)
8th May 2011, 15:15
I still have some hope for a more exciting season. As Keith wrote in todays round-up, this time of the year, in 2005, Alonso led Raikonnen by 44 to 17 points, two race wins and a podium ahead. Vettel is only a race win and a 5th place ahead so far. Sure, Alonso won 2005, but not without a fight. And now there are more drivers to fight for wins to keep Vettel away from winning it easily and quickly, including Vettel’s teammate.
Let’s hope Ferrari keep working to maintain their seeminly increased pace, and McLaren do get all those “Red Bull matching” updates in Spain, while Mercedes find a way to also have pace for Rosberg on a full tank of fuel.

Raikkonen was driving a Newey-designed car though. And only poor reliability stopped him from beating Alonso to the title. This time Vettel is in the lead AND driving a Newey car that’s actually reliable. Only a catastrophe can stop Vettel and Red Bull now.

Great job this year, so far, by Sauber. Its a shame their first race was DQ’d, otherwise they would be doing even better. Well done!

Just a couple of interesting stats regarding Vettel’s championship lead –
For Fernando Alonso to take the title… he would have to score nearly 4 points a race more than Vettel in every remaining race. Even if he manages to score 3 points more than Vettel in every remaining race… he still wont be able to win the title!
matt88 (@matt88)
8th May 2011, 19:45
Vettel got the 93% of the available points, is it a new record after 4 races? probably even Schumi in 2002 or 2004 couldn’t reach that figure…
David-A (@david-a)
9th May 2011, 4:25
Mansell and Schu had 100% after 4 races in 1992 and 2004 respectively.
matt88 (@matt88)
8th May 2011, 19:59
let’s do some maths…
2002: Schumi won in Australia, Brazil and San Marino, while got 3rd in Malaysia. That is 34 points out of 40, which makes 85% (points were 10-6-4-3-2-1).
2004: actually here Schumi won 5 races in a row in the beginning of the season, so he got a 100%.
rfs
8th May 2011, 22:05
Mansell also won the first 5 races in 1992.
matt88 (@matt88)
8th May 2011, 22:25
ok, if we look back we’ll find a lot of people who performed better (even Ascari and Clark, as Todfod said)…
but if we look just at the last decade (2001-2010), only Schumi in 2004 got a better result in the beginning of the season.
Todfod (@todfod)
8th May 2011, 20:31
Schumacher won the first 4 races of the 2004 season didn’t he? So I guess Schumi still holds that record. Clark and Ascari have had the perfect season, which means they won the entire 100% of the points up for grabs. So that record has been set long time ago.
In recent history,I think Alonso and Button came close, with 90% of the possible points after four races in 2005 and 2009. I think Schumacher had the same 90% after the four races in 2002 as well.
For this season to get interesting.. Vettel needs to pull a 2009 style Button-esque dip in form. But honestly, I cannot see a driver of Vettel’s calibre having such a dip in form, nor can I see RB losing its advantage at any point of time in this season. Ugh.. it hurts to see the points table man… it really does.
