Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Montreal, 2011

Fernando Alonso was quickest for Ferrari in a disrupted second practice session in Canada.

Sebastian Vettel bounced back from his crash in the first session in the best possible way – by jumping straight to the top of the times shortly after leaving the pits.

He was relegated from the top of the times by Alonso, still using the soft tyres, who edged his time by a quarter of a second.

Alonso went on to almost matched Lewis Hamilton’s pole position time from last year, with a 1’15.107.

However a spate of accidents thwarted the teams’ attempts to test the super-soft tyres.

Adrian Sutil was one of the first drivers to try the super-soft tyres, but his effort came to an end when he hit the barrier at turn seven.

His car was recovered under yellow flags. But a few minutes later Kamui Kobayashi did a more comprehensive job of damaging the Sauber, causing the session to be stopped.

He hit the wall heavily at turn four, causing a lot of damage to the right-hand side of the Sauber.

When the session was restarted 15 cars left the pits at once, with Jerome d’Ambrosio among the first of them. But on his first flying lap he crashed at the same place Kobayashi had, causing another red flag.

Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton limped back into the pits with a right-rear puncture, possibly caused by debris from the accident.

After another hiatus the session resumed with a quarter of an hour left on the clock.

With most drivers now having made several aborted attempts to set times on super-soft tyres, few of them ran the tyres at the end of the session.

One driver who did was Paul di Resta, who set the sixth-quickest time.

Another was Pedro de la Rosa, he spent most of the session being fitted into Sergio Perez’s Sauber and only appeared in the final half-hour.

    1. Sadly, I think that pace for Ferrari is a bit fake, hope I’m wrong but I’m sure they are closer to the limit.

    2. Umm… Mark seems to be way off the pace this weekend!

      Come on mate!!!!

      1. The opposite for Massa!
        Come on mate!!!!

    3. it apears that ferrari look competitive, but mclaren and red bull are yet to show the potential… Like in monaco, fp2 was good for ferrari but in quali mclaren and the bulls were much faster than them..

      1. how do you know the red bulls and mclarens were much faster than ferrari in quali in canada as well? It hasnt happened yet.

    4. How does one get the gallery with these pictures
      http://www.formula1.com/wi/0x0/sutton/2011/d11cdn528.jpg

I cant find any way to it from the http://www.formula1.com website

      1. Don’t know, but if you change the last two digits in the URL increasing or decreasing by one you will find all the pictures!
If you discover the gallery tell us!

      2. Well, how did you find it then?

        1. On the autosport forums but dont have an account there so checked here. They are mark suttons pictures but in high res without the watermark. The monaco ones were great.

        2. Try sutton-images.com.

      3. Sangeen … After reading your post, I went to the formula1.com site and scrolled down to “gallery”. Click on the top photo and it will take you to the Friday gallery thumbnails. I imagine it is because I have IE9, so cannot use the “side scroll bar” and have to use the keyboard scroll arrows or the mouse scroll wheel. But it is right there on the front page.

        1. It really loves the williams.Maybe the ‘wi’ stands for williams

    5. Very unusually slow there from the Mercedes. After their fast FP1 session, I can’t believe this is anything near their true pace.

      1. And you have to reason to either. Their times were some three seconds slower, so obviously they were running low fuel and harder tyres.

    6. Pedro DLR did quite a nice job of being on the pace in a few laps.

I guess RBR were splitting strategies here in the session, expect both the RBRs and the McLarens be faster than Alonso on Saturday.

      1. yeah, a bit of a different picture (or is that a cutout?)

    7. Looks really amazing! A mean beast of a Rosso Torro it is.

    8. This circuit is dangerous. Way too many concrete walls.

      1. ever watch indycar?

    9. @Johnathan.. Its a street circuit. What do you expect….

    10. McLarens looking very strong. Almost identical times

      1. Maybe you can tell us..Is there a gallery with all those pictures?

        1. if you find a good pic on the f1.com gallery here – http://www.formula1.com/gallery/race/2011/857/

and look at the file name of a good picture, d11cdn1000a.jpg

then take the numbers, such as 1000a and put them in the /sutton/2011/ url like below.

          http://www.formula1.com/wi/0x0/sutton/2011/d11cdn1000a.jpg

chaning the numbers randomly may find additional photos.

          http://www.formula1.com/wi/0x0/sutton/2011/d11cdn980.jpg

          1. To find the photo number, on Chrome you have to right-click, inspect element, and in the resources tab find the photo you’re looking for.

            1. Or you can find the photo on the resources tab, then open the link eg. http://www.formula1.com/wi/597×478/sutton/2011/d11mon2541.jpg
then change the 597×478 numbers to 0x0

    11. Sounds like a bit of a mental session. If anything, you would think there would be less crashes than FP1 given the track is rubbered in slightly, but still, that’s motorsport.

    12. This is the start of the gallery for the Canadian GP http://www.formula1.com/gallery/race/2011/857/

    13. Red Bull will have hard time this weekend, it will interesting to see which of the team from Mclaren, Ferrari & Mercedes show their claws this race.

It’s the first time in many years that the Fiat logos haven’t been substituted by Case IH logos for Canada.

    15. Overslept and missed it! But to be fair, it was on at 4am for me… :P

    16. Alonso will weep. He likes it.
