Adrian Sutil calm over F1 future despite legal action (BBC)

“What can I say? I have to concentrate on my job, and if he [Eric Lux] does that [file a complaint] then we can of course go to court. But why should I lose my drive? It’s a private thing and it’s my work here.”

European GP – Conference 1 (FIA)

“Q: (Alex Popov – RTR) Kamui, two weeks ago, you drove a beautiful race but after the finish, two different drivers – Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld – accused you of deliberately braking or at least lifting off just in front of them. Your reaction, and I will also ask Mark to comment, because you know well the danger of this type of situation.
Kamui Kobayashi: If you want, I can show you the data. I have nothing?? Off the line, because only the car is able to stay on the track and I was really pushing. The front tyre lost the grip line, the clean line and I couldn’t change the car’s direction. I just had to wait otherwise I would be completely on the wet part. I tried to do the best thing, but this was coming from a bit of over-driving.”

Martin Brundle on Twitter

“David Coulthard and me just badly lost a pit stop competition against Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Painful. I asked for a stewards enquiry, Lewis said he knew the way there.”

Comment of the day

Robbie reads between the lines of Fernando Alonso’s interesting remarks yesterday:

I’ll assume that Alonso means that given the car is not quite a race winner but knocking on the door, he himself has had to wrestle the thing around the track an awful lot this year. I.e. he’s not speaking to the results for an indication of how he is doing this year, but his own personal performance in the car, and perhaps other drivers wouldn’t have been able to do what he has with this car that clearly isn’t quite right.

Something we look for in championship-level drivers – what they can do when the car isn’t the best on the grid.

F1 Fanatic meet-up

Greg, Dan, Tom B, Katy, Alex and Tom C

Dan Thorn writes to tell about the F1 Fanatic meet-up to watch the Canadian Grand Prix:

Five of us – Tom Bellingham (TommyB89), Katy Peach (Katy), Greg Morland (Ned Flanders), Keith’s brother Tom (Ratboy) and I travelled from all across the UK to Alex Odell’s (ajokay) house on Friday afternoon for a motorsport filled weekend.

As many of us hadn’t really met each other before, I was expecting it to be slightly awkward at first. With such a strong common bond of being massive F1 fans however, it wasn’t long before we were discussing our favourite Minardi liveries and deciding that every Jordan looks awesome. Katy had also baked a delicious F1-themed cake – yummy!

Saturday morning saw the inaugural GT5 F1 Fanatic 24 Laps of Le Mans. You wouldn’t have thought that sitting watching a virtual race from one car’s viewpoint for an hour and a half would be interesting, but the race was so full of action that it had everyone glued to the screen.

It was during this race that one of the competitors, fellow F1 Fanatic member SuperNiceBob, took on cult hero status. Indeed, it went to such an extent that during Saturday’s Free Practice session we (along with some other F1 Fanatics from down under) managed to get a tweet read out on 5Live on his behalf (http://www.twitvid.com/YARMQ) which elicited a huge cheer from all of us.

We were all excited to see that Montreal was wet, and it didn’t disappoint, though we were all very angry at the prolonged use of the safety car at the restart and there was another cheer when it finally came in. My own personal anger level went up a notch however when Alonso was punted off by Button. 100% a racing incident, but as a Ferrari fan it was galling, especially on a weekend when they were looking strong. Cheering around the room (especially from Alex) only intensified my disappointment. (Don’t worry fellow Ferrari fans; I got my own back by goading Massa on past Kobayashi over the line).

Our eyes then turned to Schumacher carving through the field, which went some way to soothing Kamui’s decline from a podium position. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d want Schumacher to win, but Sunday was that day. It’s a shame he dropped off of the podium but this was easily his best race for Mercedes. By this time Button was monstering the sectors and the general feeling in the room was anyone but Vettel again – even for distinguished Vettel fans Tom and Katy! When Button forced Vettel into a mistake on the final lap there was another cheer around the room in celebration of a great win by Jenson, though there was also slight disappointment that the lead had changed by virtue of a mistake rather than some sort of epic overtake.

The next day we all packed our things and said our goodbyes. It was a truly fantastic weekend and I can’t thank Alex enough for taking the time to organise and host us for the weekend. I’d also like to thank Keith for setting up this brilliant website – it’s a privilege to be part of such a fantastic community and I’m thoroughly looking forward to the next meet up.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday to Andrew Smith, Daniel and inc0mmunicado!

On this day in F1

It was war between the Schumacher brothers at the Nurburgring ten years ago today as Michael Schumacher edged Ralf towards the pitwall at the start of the European Grand Prix.

It may look tame now compared to Schumacher’s similar move at the Hungaroring last year, but Ralf was unimpressed with his older brother’s driving.

The older Schumacher won easily, with Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard between him and his brother at the chequered flag.

Today is also the 100th anniversary of Juan Manuel Fangio’s birthday. The five-times world champion died in 1995.

  1. Other things that Sutil isn’t concerned will impede his career or race prospects:

Tyre barriers, kerbs, walls, armco, competitor’s vehicles, losing of parts of his car, marshals, failing to eliminate rookie mistakes 5 years after entering the sport, being beaten comprehensively by a rookie.

    1. Sutil does not concern himself with such mortal matters.

Ralf was unimpressed with his older brother’s driving.

    Few are these days. #cheapshot

  3. It doesn’t show in the picture, but Greg is a giant!

    1. You’ve met him? I only know him from here and FB pictures

      1. We met a few days before this.

        1. Ah, right. Hope you’ve had a great time!

    2. You can tell from his knees.

      1. He had to duck slightly to fit through my doors. And it’s not like they’re Hobbit doors… they’re regular sized doors!

        1. First person I’ve ever met that’s taller than me. A part of me died when I realised that.

          1. Interesting. I’m probably the shortest person on this site! :P

      2. Great weekend that. Hope to do it again sometime and this time we’re taking Inoue to the F1’95 PS1 championship.

        1. Dammit he’ll get to the FIA Gala and finally wear that bow tie…

          1. Fantastic write-up, by the way Dan! Even if it did make me a little jealous… :P

  4. “But why should I lose my drive? It’s a private thing and it’s my work here.”

Is he actually being serious saying that!

    1. I hope Sutil knows that if he is behind bars, there is no way he is retaining his drive.

      1. How could he!

  5. “What can I say? I have to concentrate on my job, and if he [Eric Lux] does that [file a complaint] then we can of course go to court. But why should I lose my drive? It’s a private thing and it’s my work here.”

If I were Sutil, I’d be more worried about Paul di Resta than Eric Lux.

    1. Unless he has another glass/bottle

      1. COTD lol

      2. Surely Sutil should be even more concerned about Hulkenburg. What a team that would be. I feel that we are now starting to see the next batch of drivers coming through and it wont be too long till the Hulk returns (With Sutil’s impending jail sentance or not)

I don’t really understand why Hulk is so highly rated by some. Apart from his remarkable display in Brazil 2010 (qually only) he was comprehensively outperformed by Barrichello last year, who is being comprehensively outperformed by Maldanado this year!

I do believe that he deserves another chance in F1 but he hasn’t proven himself yet.

You are joking right? The only driver on the whole grid that has been out performed by Maldonardo is Karthikeyan. Maldonardo needs to stop driving like a slow, untalented version of Lewis Hamilton.

          2. Hulkenberg finished ahead of Barrichello six times in 2010; not too bad for a rookie going against the most experienced F1 driver.

    2. Well, he wasn’t asked about that, but I do agree that he should be.

    3. Lol! Spot on PM.

  6. Very jealous about the F1F meet up, hope one day I could do similar thing here in BD.

    1. It must have been very nice! It’s good to enjoy the race with other fans.

  7. Keith,

I have won a ticket to the F1 Fan Forum at the MTC.

Trouble is, can’t afford the plane tickets from Australia :(

Anyone want to sponsor me? :p

    1. Maybe if you set up a paypal account, and promise to forceully drive home the common concerns of all F1Fanatics while you’re there… or maybe you should offer Keith to do a major publicity stunt for his site : )

  8. Ralf was unimpressed with his older brother’s driving.

And I doubt Michael was impressed with Ralf’s at the same circuit in 1997.

    1. I don’t think anyone has ever been impressed with Ralf’s driving…

      1. Including Ralf

      2. I was pretty impressed with his crash in Melbourne a few years back.

  9. that Coultard twitter quote is pretty funny haha

    1. Yeah, nice to see them having fun like that.

      1. I think we should propose an idea to Keith…

How about adding “Why will Lewis Hamilton’s presence be required in the stewards office this weekend?” to the predictions championship.

Bonus points for guessing who the incident gets blamed on.

        ;)

        1. Maybe for a tie breaker only though, not additional points.

I’d go for… Alonso and ‘pit lane incident’ this weekend.

        2. Good idea!

        3. Don’t let Ali-G guess …

  10. Of course Sutil shouldn’t be concerned about the court case, but he should be concerned about Di Resta outracing him…

    1. Di Resta is out-qualifying him, but Sutil is ahead in the points and is therefore out-racing him.

      1. Agreed, It is curious how some seem to conveniently forget Sutil’s ahead in the points. But yes di Resta is out qualifiying him – although this year qualifying appears to be less significant.

      2. Sutil has finished ahead of Di Resta three times, while Di Resta has finished ahead of Sutil four times.

      3. The Last Pope
        24th June 2011, 17:41

Although Di Resta is consistantly racing ahead of Sutil. Its only rookie overtaking errors that are putting Di Resta back. Once he figures out how big his front wing is he will start scoring more points than Sutil.

  11. Kieth, can we have a pirelli tyre approval poll similar to Jean todt? Maybe for DRS too.

      1. Thanks for the link.Didnt know it was already done. Regarding pirelli my personal feeling is that they have done a fantastic job and should be lauded for helping create exciting races.

  12. Quite some Birthdays today. I hope all of you enjoy a nice friday, possibly with time to see the FP1/FP2 sessions and a nice party – to Andrew Smith, Daniel and inc0mmunicado

  13. I met Tom and Katy for a showing of Senna in Leeds, lovely people! I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for another meet-up.

Force India might just let Sutil go that bit easier if he doesn’t book his ideas up. PdR is really pushing him.

    1. Thanks! Was great to meet you guys too. Really enjoyed watching going to the pub after and chatting about F1 :D

      1. That was brilliant. Just went too quickly! I should have you guys round my new place when I move in for an F1 session :)

  14. I heard somewhere that Sutil followed up that quote with “If those jurors convict me, I’ll have them and all.”

Wow that Schumacher battle was 10 years ago! The year I started my addiction to F1, makes me feel old!
