Mark Webber, Red Bull, Hungaroring, 2011

Mark Webber says he’s improved his performance in recent races and he’d be happy to carry on racing through August.

Writing in his column for the BBC Webber said: “[July] was a good month for me in a lot of ways, in that I’ve definitely made a step forward with my performance on Sunday afternoons compared to earlier in the year as I’m getting a lot more out of the car.

“I also had stronger qualifying performances at Silverstone and Nurburgring and have been more even with Sebastian at the last three races by being able to put longer stints together on the tyres.”

Webber added he wishes the gap between Hungary and the next race in Belgium was less than three weeks: “I actually wish there wasn’t a break right now.

“I always feel like I need a break after the first four or five long-haul races, but in Europe I feel I could just go on and on.

“I got up on Monday morning after the race in Hungary and was thinking about Spa already; looking for that next opportunity to improve.”

  1. Ha, looks like he feels his steam engine is ready to roll on!

I guess his mechanics do feel like needing a bit of a rest though. They certainly had issues in abundance to work on so far this year :-(

    1. Haha centainly his mechanics would be tired!

    2. I don’t understand what’s happening with Mark this year. It’s as though 2011 forgot him.

  2. Why could’nt you have been like this in Australia oh so long ago?

    1. Maybe he takes the season looked from Australia. With this the beginning in the winter and Australia the first race after the summer break :-(

  3. Yeah its a little too late for Mark to be showing enthusiasm. If he was ready to battle from race 1 onwards, this championship would have been very interesting.

    1. +1.

It would way more interesting if he took 2 or 3 of Vettel’s vicotories…

  4. You do have to wonder why they bother with the holiday when they managed to do it without one for over 50 years…

    1. Because for most of those 50 years, there weren’t 19 races in a season.

    2. except they’ve always had at least one 3-4 week break between races in past seasons, usually multiple. And those seasons were far shorter than now.

I’m going to guess you have a job – would you take a job (or be happy in one) where you get NO annual leave, ever? Of course not.

  5. It really not good to be out of an f1 car for 4 weeks

    1. I thought it was 3 weeks

  6. He can just play F1 2010

    1. With any luck i’ll bump into him on there.

    2. Nah, with all the ridiculous bugs in that game I wouldn’t bother!!! An F1 driver wouldn’t take too kindly to be held in the pits whilst the whole pack drives past like in the game! He would probably get out and punch the ‘lolipop’ man! ;-)

      1. What about one week leave in Brazil? I’m thinking about Salvador, Rio de Janeiro…

MAybe a Safari in Botswana would make him feel good too. The world is so beautiful and having money to burn is blessing, so Mark…

      2. Don’t pit when everyone else does. Simple.

  7. I hate the holidays in the middle of the year – it’s far too long to wait for GP action!

But i’m afraid, Mark, that is far too late for the title this year. Even if Seb finishes two places behind Mark at every race remaining this year, Seb will still be in front in the Championship. Mark hasn’t got a chance.

A little too late to win the title, yes. But not too late to allow someone else to win it.

    1. It’s interesting, because Webber is 2nd in the championship and yet the only one of the top 5 not to have won a race this year. And everyone reckons he’s had a dreadful year, but he’s 2nd in the championship.

      1. He’s had the fastest car for the majority of the season- he should be 2nd. That he is only just 2nd is a sign that he has underperformed. He’s been constistent and has a good number of podiums, but when your team mate has only had 1 race outside the top 2, that isn’t good enough. Especially when you’ve only had a single race inside the top 2.

      2. I think his season is far from deadful. When his car was capable of winning, his team mate did.

  9. It seems loke he’s quite motivated now. Let’s hope he could match Vettel the rest of the year. Or next year too.

  10. We also don’t need a break, too, Mark :)

  11. Certainly doesn’t sound like someone ready to roll over and throw the towel in on his F1 Career.

  12. Obviously he doesn’t want the break because Ferrari and McLaren are gonna work hard these days and close the gap when the holidays is over! haha =D

    1. Only as much as RBR are going to try and get back to winning ways.

    2. The factories are shut down during the break. They are not allowed to work.

  13. In that article it says Mark is flying to meet with Dietrich Mateschitz with talks about the past present and future.

Tell me, what is he talking about all the time? What is going on that we arn’t being told here?

    1. I think I read (2-3 weeks back) he was off there to sign his new contract after the race in Hungary
