Alonso had the opportunity to back of and save his tyres for a late push because his nearest threat, Kimi Raikkonen, was too far behind. Felipe Massa was in between the pair of them but he was never going to be allowed to overtake his team mate.

Having taken care of his tyres earlier in the stint Alonso unleashed a series of quick laps from lap 48 in a bid to put Mark Webber under pressure.

But Webber responded quickly to Alonso’s spurt of pace. After five laps in which he’d reduced Webber’s 4.7s lead by just one second, Alonso backed off again.

Lewis Hamilton’s lap times show the development of his various problems quite clearly. From lap 19 his times rise due to the anti-roll bar problem which also made it harder for him to look after his tyres.

Then on lap 52 his times spike after he collected a large piece of Astroturf which attached itself to the right-hand side of his car. This cost him around four seconds on lap 53 alone, though from there on he was able to reduce the time lost on the last two laps.

    1. Massa was pretty much matching Alonso all race, and Vettel was about 0.4s faster than Alonso per lap apart from in the end during the tyre saving phase for Vettel.

      1. Agree, for me, if Ferrari didn’t send that mensage, he would match Webber.

    2. It surprised me a little that Alonso didn’t release Massa to chase down Webber. Had it not worked, then they could have swapped positions at the end for maximum points for Alonso. OR, Massa might have been able to push Webber harder, either being able to pass him and hold him up for Alonso, or making the Red Bulls have to push and possibly wear their tyres more, causing a very exciting last few laps between two Ferraris and two Red Bulls with no grip in fast left handers.

      1. What would be the point? Webber would still be ahead of Alonso.

Isn’t that the possible answer to your question?

          1. Webber looked like he had enough pace to stay ahead of Massa and if Massa couldn’t pass him they’d have to orchestrate two position switches between their drivers which would end up costing them both time and they’d still finish in the same positions they did anyway. If the gap between the Red Bulls and the Ferraris was a little smaller then maybe but as it was it looked like there wasn’t much chance for a gain.

    3. @keithcollanine – You have a mystery driver called 118.108 on this one.

      1. Now who on earth is that?

    4. Go Pic! Seriously, 0.5 secs faster than the Caterham flaps, with Petrov’s also set at the end of the race.

Without a loud-mouthed team principal, Marussia are quietly creeping unnoticed towards the midfield.

That’s not true at all. If you take a look on the lap chart, you’ll see that both Caterhams were constantly faster than Pic (however, Glock was pretty much matching the times set by Kovalainen and Petrov). It wasn’t until the last five laps that Pic suddenly got faster. With Pirelli tyres and no refuelling, fastest laps alone aren’t very informative.

    5. Although Vettel was leading the race pretty much the whole time you can still see that he had a reasonable speed advantage on those behind him for the first stint but slipped back for the other two. Looks like the softer compound was their preferred tyre this weekend.
