Sauber will continue using Ferrari engines next year, the team has announced.
The team said on Friday the deal was for “supply of the complete powertrain, including engine, gearbox and ERS [Energy Recovery System] in a multi-year agreement”.
Team principal Monisha Kaltenborn said: “We are pleased to extend our technical partnership with Ferrari taking Sauber into the new era of engines that starts in 2014.”
“Ferrari has been a long standing partner of the team, first from 1997 to 2005 and then again from 2010 onwards. We are proud to extend our relationship with such a prestigious and renowned brand and look forward to entering the 2014 season with a strong and reliable partner like Ferrari.”
Sauber are the final team to confirm their choice of engine supplier next year.

So 2014/2015 Ferrari and then hop on the Honda-wagon?

I was hoping they would make the switch. I think Sauber-Honda would be a good combination, because Sauber really run their team the way Honda should have in 2006-08. And even though they have such a close relationship with Ferrari, I don’t think Ferrari have really used the team as completely as they could have. If the likes of Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne are going to graduate to Formula 1, then Sauber would be the perfect starting point.

So it’ll be:
Renault – Red Bull, Lotus, Toro Rosso, Caterham
Ferrari – Ferrari, Sauber, Marussia
Mercedes – Mercedes, McLaren, Force India, Williams
right?

In terms of the amount of support the engine manufacturers will be offering the teams, you’ve got the order right, although I’d probably McLaren and Force India around.

Yep, although do you reckon anyone will join McLaren at Honda in 2015?

Lotus maybe? Who knows. They have already been complaining about the cost of the Renault engines.

I’m guessing none of the Renault teams, given that they are all linked one way or another to Renault; likewise, none of the Ferrari teams. I’d guess Force India (given their links to McLaren) — Williams had previous links to Honda, but they are just about to switch to Mercedes so it’s unlikely they’ll make a switch in a year.

I believe Merc and Williams are said to have a “several year contract”. I imagine many of these suppliers will want to lock up these teams for as long as possible to keep anyone from going to Honda and developing their engine.

No, Honda have said that they are only going to supply McLaren in 2015, but other teams may do so in 2016.

I wonder if the new deal brings with it a “suggestion” from Ferrari that they bring Massa on board?

Just as long as it’s not BAR

I love that this guy is a candidate, it’s completely ridiculous they’d consider someone so old (in f1 terms). I know he does indy car, but it didn’t exactly work for Schumacher or De La Rosa did it?
