Kimi Raikkonen had cause to question Ferrari’s strategy after losing out to team mate Fernando Alonso during the Spanish Grand Prix.

For most teams when their drivers are running in consecutive position close to each other the leading driver is given the first call on strategy. It is unlikely Raikkonen would have chosen to let Alonso pit one lap before him, as happened, as it would put Raikkonen at risk of being overtaken via the undercut.

That almost happened – Raikkonen only just made it out of the pits in front of Alonso. The positions would probably have changed at this point had Alonso’s out-lap been closer to the pace of other drivers, such as Jenson Button, who was a second quicker on his first lap out of the pits.

Alonso eventually got ahead because Ferrari switched him to a three-stop strategy, leaving him faster at the end of the race which he used to overtake Raikkonen.

It would be easy to claim with hindsight that a three-stop strategy was ‘superior’ but Ferrari could not have known that for sure at the point they committed to it. Just as with the two Mercedes drivers, different strategies were pursued by drivers in the same team.

A three-stop strategy leaves a driver far more vulnerable to being stuck in traffic, as was the case for Felipe Massa, who ended up dropping out of the points.

Raikkonen’s lack of pace at the beginning of his final stint stands out. On his first lap after leaving the pits he was four tenths of a second slower on new tyres than Alonso was on nine-lap old rubber, despite being in clear air.

But if Ferrari’s decision to split strategies between their drivers seems reasonable, the initial decision to pit Alonso before Raikkonen is a surprising one. Raikkonen was clearly unimpressed with the situation, and walked away when asked about it by reporters after the race.

  1. It’s amazing to see the gap between Rosberg and Hamilton never exceeded 5s for the whole race. Pitstops notwithstanding.

    1. Exactly. Hamilton doesn’t seem as unbeatable as some say.

      1. If you check the other races, Lewis is keen to manage the gap and not take too much out of the tyres. Lewis is driving a very intelligent races

  2. I know that Vettel got fastest lap, but Mercedes were looking after their tires and jousting with each other on a two stop strategy. They could have easily cut another second or two off their fastest lap if they’d been on a three stop strategy. Vettel did the three stop and used incredibly aggressive driving to fight through the field….which was much more fun to watch for me! I’m a HAM supporter, but I love to watch someone just drive the freaking tires off the car and that’s what Vettel did.

  3. I was unaware that Alonso was given the undercut.
You’re right Keith. This is not good news for Kimi.

Kimi’s cars have been complete junk in the first 4 races, he finally gets a good race and he gets screwed by Ferrari giving Alonso the undercut. Once the announcement came last year that Kimi was to switch to Ferrari, I said Kimi would beat Alonso if they were on even terms in Ferrari. This clearly isn’t the case.

      1. LOL, there’s 1 race when Kimi BARELY outqualifies Alonso……. and everything goes BOOM: Kimi is better than Alonso. Come on, let’s get over this for good. Yeah, I think Ferrari favours/likes Alonso more, but that’s “because” of Alonso too. He proved he can deliver in great times, but in hard times too. I think the comparison between Alonso and Massa for the 2010-2013 period…. is more than enough. After all, that’s why Ferrari got rid of Massa in the end: the gap was way too big between them ! Personally, I wouldn’t bet on Kimi either, given the current situation – performance wise – at Ferrari. At the moment, so far, Massa’s replacement with Kimi… is like a big flop for Ferrari. The 2nd horse (Kimi) is still half dead in the garage, just like it used to be, only that now it’s a lot more expensive. By “expensive” I mean Kimi’s salary must be 2-3 times bigger than Massa’s.

        1. Can you please remind me who is Ferrari’s last WDC please ? How many years took that driver to be WDC since he joined Ferrari ? How many years have been since Alonso started with Ferrari ? strange facts for your “he can deliver” silliness.

  4. Ferrari indeed has decided to pit Alonso in for an aggressive strategy, as did Vettel compared to Ricciardo, as did Massa compared to Bottas. Maybe a three stop was more a gamble to try if further back, on a circuit where it is difficult to overtake?

  5. Nice to see how Vettel managed to get to 14th – the strategy was just spot on, superb effort from Red Bull. The three-stop strategy really worked out well for Vettel and Alonso, which is something I didn’t expect at all.

    1. @andae23

Nice to see how Vettel managed to get to 14th

He made up only 1 position in the race? That’s disappointing. ;)

      1. @kingshark I guess my mind was somewhere between 15th and 4th when I typed ;)

  6. Does anyone know what the fastest speed was during the race and by which driver?

  7. Something very strange going on with Massa that race.
He just never seemed capable of overtaking anyone despite what appears to be much fresher tires and pace.

He only Kevin Magnussen as far as I can tell.
