“For once I’ll cheer you up,” said Sebastian Vettel’s race engineer Guillaume Rocquelin at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix.

“You got the fastest lap of the race!”

Back when Vettel won races with the regularity Lewis Hamilton is doing now, he could be relied upon to reel off a cheeky fastest lap at the end of the race. This invariably frustrated his team, who would have preferred Vettel to nurse his car to the chequered flag.

This was the first time the fastest lap was set by a car that wasn’t a Mercedes and it did require some special circumstances. Vettel was on a three-stop strategy and so had fresher tyres later in the race than the two silver cars.

Even so, both Mercedes drivers were pushing equally hard in an effort to win the race. And it’s the first time they’ve been beaten by any metric this year, albeit an inconsequential one.

  1. Rocky’s messages are the best.

  2. I dare say Caterham has started its last season.

    1. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to agree with you

      1. Yep. Either a White Knight sweeps in and buys the team or else they are gone. With Lotus possibly on the menu for Haas…I can’t see Caterham on the grid next year. Sad.

Maybe some aggressive cost control measures might buy them another year of hope….but I can’t see the FIA and the top teams agreeing to it quickly considering Bernie and company are much more interested in lining their own Very. Deep. Pockets. than improving the sport at this point.

The strange thing about rich people is that for most of them it’s like a disease. There is never enough. How many more houses and cars can Bernie and his daughters and wives own? When does a person like that look around and go: “hmmm, I’ve made it. What kind of good things can I do to leave the world a better place?”.
Sadly, I don’t think it will ever happen because Bernie shows the tendencies of a psychopath with no ability to feel empathy for anyone but himself. I guess that’s how you get that rich to start with so I shouldn’t expect anything more.

        1. Haas said no to buying either Caterham or Lotus, he wanna start fresh.

        2. Haas buying either of them has already been denied by all parties.

          1. Well, maybe Haas can buy a fully functional F1 base in motorsport valley as their 2nd, Euro base of operations if they’re not too superstitious about Arrows and soon Caterham having died there, haunting the premises with their ghosts of broken dreams.

“There is only one type of people that think about money more than the rich and that is the poor, they can think of nothing else.”

    2. Ericsson 4.5 seconds of the pace despite setting his time almost at the same moment as Vettel..

  3. Both Mercedes’ first stint is absolutely ridiculous. They might as well be in another category!

  4. When I saw that fastest lap from Vettel..WOW..it was comparable with Merc even with the same strategy. I hope he started to realize how to push that RBR package and we will have 2009 battle again.

    1. Vettel 3 stopped whereas both Mercs 2 stopped.

    2. Nah. More to the point by S chicodha, Vettel’s teammate, running the same strategy ast he leaders, was the now normal 1s behind the Mercedes in peak pace, just as in qualifying. RBR, just like everyone else, is now falling further behind Mercedes. I daresay that by Silverstone most teams, beginning with McLaren and those slower, should just fuel for 1 or 2 fewer laps than the race distance, beause that is as far as they are going. If any team want’s a victory, they better prepare a one-off Monaco/Hungaroring/street-course car, and hope for the best.
