The Canadian Grand Prix came to a thrilling conclusion: Daniel Ricciardo clinched his first grand prix win, and on the final lap Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez crashed heavily, fortunately without injury to either driver.

But the circuit’s handling of the crowd at the end of the race was called into question. Twelve months on from an accident which claimed the life of marshal Mark Robinson, there were concerns that fans had been allowed onto the circuit while recovery vehicles were being operated.

And while some spectators tried to get their hands on pieces of debris from the crash, marshals discharged fire extinguishers to keep them at bay.

But most of the attention was on Ricciardo following his remarkable maiden Formula One victory. Here’s how the chaotic Canadian Grand Prix happened on Twitter.

Build-up

Marussia were full of optimism from their Monaco Grand Prix success as they sent their cars to the grid. Unfortunately they wouldn’t get much further than that.

Start of the race

Mercedes trouble

Battle for victory

A big crash between Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa was a cause for concern. Fortunately, both were alright.

After the chequered flag

Ricciardo was congratulated on his first win by the man he replaced at Red Bull, his countryman Mark Webber.

I was one of the “old noise” defenders, but I have to agree with @willbuxton, when Daniel moved over Nico, the fans exploded and you could hear it on TV, so I guess the atmosphere on the track was awesome. More multiple racing and less Mercedes 1-2s is the solution

  5. The scene from Vettel avoiding the crash is just fantastic. Terrific job on avoiding that one…

  6. Couldn’t help but wonder from these pictures, if that accident happened earlier in the race, would they have brought out a red flag to clear it up and repair the barriers?

    1. that’s what i would hope they’d do. i think the red flag is underused – safety car just wastes loads of laps and they would need about 15 to clear up that mess. especially, as both drivers needed medical attention.

    2. @strontium I remember in China for one of the first gp’s held there, that they had the SC out the whole time while they checked every drain was secured after one of them had come up in Practise and there were signs it was happening during the race. So to answer your question, no, they would not have Red Flagged it, as the road wasn’t blocked. Also the 1st lap incident between Bianchi & Chilton caused a lot of nervousness up and down pitlane with the threat of punctures.

      1. But if the barriers were severely damaged it could take 30 minutes or so to repair them, in which case they surely couldn’t drive around under safety car!
