Attendance at the Hockenheimring remained poor on Saturday, providing one of the talking points at the German Grand Prix.
Here’s how the day unfolded on Twitter.
Not exactly full up. #qualifying #germanGP

F1 has to realise it isn’t the “Show” that’s keeping people away. It’s €300 tickets. The price of a holiday for a family of 4 to see a race.

Third practice
At Hockenheim. The view from Südtribüne Oberrang takes my breath away. You don’t need ear plugs anymore but F1 is still loud.

Button: “We’re miles away from where we need to be guys. Not got any balance. Braking power is terrible.” #F1
— F1 Fanatic Live (@f1fanaticlive) July 19, 2014
Not sure if fans hear this instruction on TV but a key message delivered to the team every time the car enters the pitlane is "Car is safe"
— Caterham F1 Team (@CaterhamF1) July 19, 2014
#F1 All Renault teams running the new Total fuel today. In theory Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Lotus & Caterham should gain around 10hp.
— Tobias Grüner F1 (@tgruener) July 19, 2014
Fantastic to see #F1 cars now with no #FRIC.Cars moving around, corner entry, apex &exit.Real sense of guys hard at work in cockpit. #GermanGP

Qualifying
An unnamed person just told me they think the trackside sign should read “Bernie says Think Before You Bribe” :)
— Sean Kelly (@virtualstatman) July 19, 2014
Why is it okay to all 4 wheels off the track here and not elsewhere? Ok, no apparent advantage. But more #F1 confusion. #unnecessary
— Maurice Hamilton (@MauriceHamilton) July 19, 2014
Lewis Hamilton crashed out of qualifying early after a brake failure.
Very unusual to have a disc failure in qual, something you might expect to see late in a race after a team miscalculated cooling etc
— Adam Cooper (@adamcooperF1) July 19, 2014
Hamilton starts 15th, Alonso's the only driver to win from there, at Singapore in '08. Hamilton won't get help like that from his team mate!
— F1 Fanatic (@f1fanatic_co_uk) July 19, 2014
Another great job by Williams, really beginning to deliver on their pre-season promise.

After the action
Am I the only one struggling with the conspiracy theory that Merc are hurting Lewis H and favouring Nico R?
— Kevin Eason (@easonF1) July 19, 2014
Hmm, let’s pay a driver £20m-a-year and then blow up his brakes. Oh yes, now it makes sense ….
— Kevin Eason (@easonF1) July 19, 2014
Entirely correct by @easonF1. No team would deliberately risk lives by giving a driver faulty brakes. Crazy anyone would think otherwise.

GP2’s 200th race was one of the series’ most exciting, with Mitch Evans winning from 15th on the grid.
Mega mega mega!!!! F1 teams take note… @mitchevans_ wins again!! What a drive that was..
— Mark Webber (@AussieGrit) July 19, 2014
Holy moly. What a race! And what a joy to finally have @davidevalsecchi alongside me. I’m exhausted! Happy 200th GP2. You never disappoint

Incredible empty grandstands at Hockenheim! F1 is way too expensive now, organisers only care about corporate guests! pic.twitter.com/I1GsIq75RW

Nico Rosberg took a home pole position for the German Grand Prix. But he also formed what is the closest Formula One has ever got to an all-Finnish front row.
Quote of the day? Nico: “1.5 Finnish drivers on the front row. I think that’s a record, isn’t it?” Raised a titter! #GoetzeStarQuality

Thanks for all your messages guys. Second row tomorrow is nice. Hope tomorrow will be exciting to watch. I will certainly do my best!
— Kevin Magnussen (@KevinMagnussen) July 19, 2014
If HAM does start from the pitlane, as expected, he can make any set-up changes he wants. Could be handy if it’s raining…
— Adam Cooper (@adamcooperF1) July 19, 2014
P5 on the grid for tomorrow. Pretty pleased with my lap, doing what we can. See what tomorrow brings. I’ll be bringing some 🔥
— Daniel Ricciardo (@danielricciardo) July 19, 2014
Daniel Ricciardo’s reaction after his unsuccessful attempt to make Simon Rennie smile was shown on the world feed during Friday practice.
Ok so for all of you who saw my moves yesterday and my engineers disgust, here’s proof that he does smile 😆 pic.twitter.com/ydwsMNTFgW

Good qualifying today, front row P2. Maximum attack tomorrow to take all opportunities there is! #F1… http://t.co/ck4a2DmtrO
— Valtteri Bottas (@ValtteriBottas) July 19, 2014
Weather forecast for tomorrow at the Hockenheimring continues to fluctuate. If there is rain, looks like affecting #GP2 & #GP3 but not #F1.

Last 4 years Ferrari has been a disgrace to its history in F1.
Alan Miller (@alanmiller)
20th July 2014, 4:12
Where did that come from?
They maybe the most recognizable team in F1 but their not gonna win every year or even get second. The New York Yankees are the most famous team in baseball but they don’t go to the World Series every season, do they?
Ferrari just needs to retool and regroup, that’s all.

Some funny tweets yesterday. I especially like Ricciardo’s exchanges with his engineer (he really seems to be having a great time this year, much more so than his team mate), and the 1.5 Finnish drivers on the front row (would like to see a fully Finnish victory, but that’s not likely to happen).
As for conspiracy theories, I don’t know who is proposing them, but I think it’s hardly worth answering to. Of course, it’s conceivable that a team is more ’emotially behind’ one driver (as Webber put in, Brazil 2010) though I’ve seen no evidence of it at Mercedes (perhaps at Lotus Grosjean is better liked than Maldonado). But to suggest a team would sabotage its own cars is beyond ludicrous (oh wait, someone did suggest that: Maldonado himself in the US last year :-)
Great reference to Singapore 2008, though.
