Sebastian Vettel suspects Lewis Hamilton can go quicker after beating the Mercedes driver by four-thousandths of a second in the first day of practice.

“It’s Friday after all,” Vettel told reporters in Mexico. “I think Lewis’s lap didn’t look particularly good.”

“I think he has a little bit more in the pocket and tomorrow we need to be realistic. If it’s like this tomorrow we’ll take it, for sure. We have to look after ourselves.”

Vettel said Ferrari’s Friday programme had been productive. “We had a very good day,” he said. “Not judging the result, but just the feeling, overall pace, not for one lap but for all the laps we did and we didn’t have any problems.”

“We were always ahead of schedule in the garage which is a very good sign. So overall I think it was a very good day.”

    1. Until another team is up by 1sec on the Mercs in FP3, there’s no chance.
