Fernando Alonso’s McLaren-Honda expired shortly after he set what stood as the fourth-fastest lap of the race.

It was a reminder the MCL32 has shown occasional flashes of speed despite its chronic unreliability.

Lewis Hamilton won as he pleased in Canada and reeled off the race’s fastest lap six laps from home. Sebastian Vettel did the next-best on his final tour, giving us a glimpse of a battle that might have been.

  1. Is the Mclaren Honda really that bad? Stoffel’s FLap is almost one second slower than Fernando (and Stoffel set it 10 laps later with lesser fuel). This is sounding more and more like a driver problem than a car problem.

    1. Stoffel kept to a lower consumption setting, ALO claimed he had no power at all in that same setting, and had probably to retire due to an empty tank. So while ALO did that fast lap earlier, I wouldn’t dare to say he had more fuel. Also traffic can disrupt your running.
      The driver problem is simple: Any new components go to ALO first, ALO doesn’t have to listen to the pitwall concerning fuel consumption, can set up his car the way he likes, while Stoffel is the new kid, that has to obey, get aside and shut up. The real difference is seen in qualifying, and while Stoffel is trashed there too, he’s not that much worse if you keep the updates and experience levels in mind. If you want to know how bad the McLaren-Honda is: check the top speeds, and keep in mind that the setup is compromised to reduce drag

        Man.. where do you get all this information from? Please state sources.

        Maybe it’s just the obvious… that boy isn’t anywhere around Fernando’s league yet.

        1. Look at the interactive lap times. In the first stint (when both were actually still pushing), VAN is usually within 0.5 secs (often even less) off ALO. In the second stint, VAN was nowhere near anyone else so likely justed tried to end the race somehow.
          Agreed, he’s not in ALO’s league yet, but he’s actually performing quite decently given the constraints that are put on his car. Still wondering what happened to his faulty MGU-H. They probably kept it from completely breaking down to avoid a grid penalty, hoping that he’ll get an entirely new engine (and take the grid penalty) in baku anway.

          The car in itself can perform decently I guess, but the engine isn’t built for a two hour race. Both drivers were complaining about the fuel save which I guess hurts VAN a little more given that he probably actually listens to what he is told, contrary to ALO.

          1. Or just ALO saves fuel better, by pure experience.

  2. 0.6 sek between MAG and GRO in fastest lap – felt sorry for MAG having a penalty despite giving back his position… he was up as no.8 then. GRO got lucky again….

  3. Hulk didi his fastest lap with a super-old set of SS tyres and he was fastest than the two FI and Ricciardo. Renault isn’t that bad then
