It would seem that the Vice President of Iran, who also doubles as the Head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism, has seen the Film ‘Field of Dreams’. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran is to build a Formula One circuit on the island of Qeshm, in the Persian Gulf. He has a belief, and who can blame him, that if you build the circuit and, of course, offer enough money to the right person, ‘they will come’. Who will bet against the 2018 Grand Prix of Iran?

Here’s the link to that article: http://www.irna.ir/en/News/81593095/ (@keithcollantine)

The article doesn’t mention Ecclestone or the FIA, so I don’t think there’s much truth in this story (yet).

If the price is right, Bernie wouldn’t care… So a race in Antartica isn’t out of the question. The penguins just have to stump up the funds

Of course “if they build it they may not come” can also be true (which would be quite funny if it did happen).

Heck if you want it on an island, lets hold it in the Caribbean or Fiji….

They don’t seem to realise their country is judged to be one of the riskiest in the world; with Westerners face the risk of kidnap and being targeted for terrorist attack. I’m pretty sure the UK Foreign Office has Iran as one of its ‘do not visit’ countries. Add to the fact few of their inhabitants could afford race tickets. And Iran has little motorsport culture.

None of which, of course, are reasons why Bernie wouldn’t want to stage a race there. He would happily hold races in Somalia, North Korea and Zimbabwe and cosy up to the Governments of those countries, if the money was forthcoming.

‘If they build it they will come’ … well, they didn’t in Turkey and South Korea!!
